Every year the Economist comes out with a list of the world's most "livable cities."

https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2019/09/04/vienna-remains-the-worlds-most-liveable-city

The list is made from statistics regarding:

Stability and Crime
Education
Health Care
Infrastructure
Culture and Environment

For 2019 it looked like this:

There are several other outlets that make similar lists, but they all tend to be the same.

What do you think? Do you agree with this list? Do you agree with the criteria? What do you consider "livable" when it comes to a city? Is there anything that surprises you when it comes to livability?

I guess there is a difference between the spelling of "livable" judging by the red lines I'm seeing now. But anyway...

The most livable cities tend to be from wealthy nations with moderately sized cities. If you look at a top twenty list, you will see more German cities making the cut.

The New York Times has criticized this list due to the fact that it appears "anglo-centric." But since language isn't used in any of the criteria, I don't know where this is coming from.

Melbourne was the top city from 2011 to 2017

Vancouver was the top city from 2002 to 2010 but has been declining ever since... Probably due to the ridiculously high housing prices. I still find it hilarious that Calgary beats Vancouver and Toronto in this list.

I think it's pretty telling that NZ didn't make this list. In terms of health care, we're good. Going to the Dr's is cheap, or even free for some families, prescriptions are $5 across the board, low crime rates, culture is an area we could improve on, and that is something the current Govt are wanting to do anyway.

The thing is though, NZ is a fucking expensive country to live in. We have just under 5mil people, yet we have the economy of a larger European country. People from overseas, the UK in particular, tell me quite a bit that it shocks them that our produce/meat/dairy is cheaper over there, than what we pay for it here. The NZD is shitty, everything is so expensive here.

It's the world's most livable city list, not the world's most livable overgrown country town

Oops, sorry, this is the spa...

Anyway, I think Auckland is the only NZ city considered for this list, and it came in twelfth (according to here).

I kinda missed this thread last year... it's fair to say that these ratings are always slightly controversial in Sydney, where everyone knows that Melbourne's weather is totally unlivable (I mean, winter max temps hovering around 13C / 55F ... pfft). I personally think that the smaller Aussie cities are probably nicer (less traffic chaos and pollution... even if Sydney's probably nowhere near as bad as many cities on those ratings).

But I doubt that Vancouver could be missing out due to high housing prices, given Sydney and Melbourne are 2nd and 3rd on the list (technically in the opposite order...), even if Vancouver just pips them both (https://www.afr.com/property/residential/sydney-melbourne-property-among-world-s-most-expensive-20200122-p53tm6 ).

I think this list only included cities of a certain population.

Yeah, cause I can think of a couple Canadian cities I would rather live in than Toronto or Vancouver. I am not big on big cities, really. Too crowded. Victoria (across the strait from Vancouver) comes to mind. And London, Ontario, my current hometown, is pretty nice but clocks in at only 400,000ish people so doesn't get noticed internationally that much (maybe the odd bit of research from Western University, which is fairly active in medical and biotech research).

I would agree with you on Victoria. Not only one of my favorites in Canada but in all of North America. It's Pacific Northwest mixed with Victorian England. I spent many summers there.

London, I would have to see some stats on.

I live in one of the more livable cities in the US - Colorado Springs. Too expensive to really be in the running. And I'm guessing the reason there were no US cities on the list is the lack of a working health care system in this country for anyone but the wealthy.

Those two things said, I love this town. A bubbling local arts scene, and the mountains on your doorstep, and lovely New Mexico an hour away.

Atlanta came in #33 on the EIU list. I really like living in Atlanta. Our biggest problem is traffic congestion and commute time. But we rate high because of reasonable cost of living and we have several outstanding hospitals that rank among the best in the USA. There are also three world-class universities in the metro.

Atlanta rates as the best city in the USA for African-American entrepreneurs and executives. It has also been ranked as the best city in the USA for college graduate millenials to start their careers. And ranks at #3 for LGBTQ living.

I like that we're just over an hour from the mountains, and have several accessible large recreation lakes for water skiing, sailboating, motorboating, and fishing. The city has the most tree coverage of any large US city. The night life is outstanding. And Atlanta is the Hip Hop capitol of the world.

The climate is subtropical, so we get a lot of sunshine and warm weather for outdoor activity, though the summer heat and humidity promotes a lot of nighttime outdoor activities.
