One of my met peeves is "know what I'm sayin". After almost every sentence I've heard people say that. If I didn't know what you were saying, I would ask you to clarify or say excuse me.

Well, the thread is about annoying overused phrases, which is different from what actually rattles us in some sort of thunderdome showdown, macho-boy.

I hate when people use "well" before a retort to demonstrate attitude.

"Think outside the box" is one worn out pretentious cliche.

If you're going to use that phrase, grow a mustache and a mullet to go with it.

Or how about, "Just keepin it real". That's a load of shit sometimes too. The speaker just wants to be crude or nasty about something.

or "I gotta be me."

(translation: I might be an asshole, but you can't possibly expect me to not act like one. It wouldn't be authentic!)

"Or what have you"

You know when you go to the zoo or what have you.

I had a turkey sandwich and chips for lunch or what have you.

The target market would be teens that skateboard or what have you.

I hate "or what have you". And also "or what not."

I use similar things in my speech like adding "or something" to the end of a sentence when I'm rambling but when people add "or what have you" to the end it sounds like they are trying to be smart and they sound way dumb. It bugs me.

"There are reasons I don't want to get into here"

Every time someone has pulled that phrase on me they have turned out to mean that they know that they are a lying stinking weasel and that if they actually stated their reason everyone would know that is what they are.

Another thing that gets my goat (another one) is when people talk about the intentions of countries as if they were people. They will talk of what 'the US' or 'Israel' or 'Iran' want to do when in fact we all know that there is a huge range of opinion in every country and even more so in government.

It is a sloppy way of thinking that is unfortunately common even in circles that should know much better.

For several years, like back in the ninties, like, there was this like, PHRASE, that was like so overused, Man. "A new paradgim" I am like so glad we found a new paradgim, and don't like have to say "a new paradgim" like all the freaking time any more. Just sayin.....

That comes from a book on scientific method by Khune which pointed out that real science does not work the way that Karl Popper claimed it works.

According to Khun, productive science takes place when there is an example that scientists can apply cookie cutter like to solve problems. Paradigm is just a fancy word for example. So Newtonian mechanics provided a framework that could be used to explain most of the observations in physics until the mid 19th century.

Every so often someone does an experiment that completely up-ends the framework in a way that forces a complete revision of the whole field. Which is what happened with Quantum Mechanics and Relativity. Which Kuhn called a paradigm shift.

What the folk who witter on about finding new paradigms don't get is that it is a BAD THING. There is no need for a new paradigm when the old one works well and is producing good science. You only need to turn to a new paradigm when things have broken and there is a crisis.

If the CERN 'faster than light neutrinos' had been accurate then there might have been a crisis and a need for a paradigm shift. But we haven't had a proper paradigm shift in science now for at least 80 years.
