The penalties weren’t “clear”, they were hardly goal scoring chances. And really, that’s what happens when you’re a diving, time wasting, flopping, simulating team. You don’t get the benefit of the doubt.

Oh come on. It wouldn't be the World Cup if there wasn't some bitching about the refs.

So, it'll be neighbours France and Belgium in the first semi (next Tuesday). Wonder what tomorrow will bring with the other quarters?

I feel like it’s England’s turn to implode.

France looks like a clear favourite of the teams remaining IMO. I think if Croatia beat Russia they will also take England who I think will take Sweden.

But that ref in the Belgium - Brazil game. Holy fuck. 2 pretty clear penalties overlooked for Brazil as well as Fergie time. Ludicrous

If Neymar had stayed on his feet a bit more in other games then the refs might be more inclined to give fouls against him as it is most of the media have castigated the refs for being fooled by his dives and play acting so are now getting tougher. The further into the competition teams go the better and more stronger minded refs are chosen and so his antics were less likely to work.

I've picked them, but won't be shocked if Sweden wins. In some ways, I almost hope for a Sweden-Croatia semi even though my picks are for the opposite. An England-Russia match could get nasty.
Sweden ftw!

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Agreed. That shit really takes away from the game. Those were some serious, potentially career ending challenges toward the end of the match too. I understand the pressure to win at all costs, but not at the cost of another player's health. I appreciate the Brazilian ball handling skills, and their swarming offence, but their sportsmanship was shit. I cannot respect that. Glad to see them gone.

That one touch on Neymar in the box was just that, a touch. Not interference. Not a push. His momentum appeared to be carrying him forward. I have mixed feelings on VAR, but from a novice's perspective, I felt the refs make the right call, most, if not almost all of the time.

I heard that this was the first time (in World Cup history? Uncertain) that neither Germany, Brazil, or Argentina have made the semi-finals. Good news, I think.

I can only imagine what the CCCR, er, I mean, the Russian security presence will be like around Russia's match tomorrow. Best no one within 2 km be carrying even nail clippers. Lots of shoveling to do in Siberia, I hear. Play well everyone.

It's a man's sport... Neymar acts like a child trying to get his brother in trouble with their mom or something. It's pathetic. He want's to be one of the greats but you never saw Zidane or Maldini rolling around on the ground fake crying like a little bitch that got kicked in the pussy.

As soon as they go up a goal all of a sudden Neymar wastes as much time as possible, he wasted something like 8 minutes in the game against mexico. It's ridiculous and cheap.

Here is a video of a man picking up a boy so the game can go on.

I feel like England has been super lucky with all the penalty calls and easy group and road to the quarters. I really hope Kane doesn't win the golden boot with three penalties and a deflection amongst his goals.

It could get nasty yes but an England Russia match would be boring I think.
I've heard the Swedes are going to play a flat pack four today.

I'm actually enjoying watching the football. The theatre in particular.

Have the rules changed? When did it become a matter of whether there was a goal scoring chance for a penalty to be awarded?

I only saw one of the penalty appeals (4am kick-offs are a bit beyond me these days) but Kompany was very, very lucky. It was a clear foul and clearly in the penalty area. Therefore, it's a penalty. The only thing that might have saved him was that the ball was almost out of play (but probably wasn't). In which case, he should have got at least a yellow card (fouling people when the ball is dead is definitely cardable).

Well, no, but the VAR was supposed to reduce it. Instead, we have lots of bitching about the VAR...
England actually looked more convincing today. Not sure if they got what it takes to beat either France of Belgium if they actually make it to the final but still they looked a lot better today.
Whilst I agree that Neymar is too busy cheating and diving to be taken seriously, against Mexico he WAS stomped on and the Mexican should have seen a red card.
Russia have had the benefit of a few dodgy decisions so far - not least against Spain who were denied a clear penalty in the last minute of their match.
Croatia v Russia is about to start to complete the final 4.....hoping that Croatia win because Russia arent good enough to beat England in the semi...
This has been a fantastic world cup. It seems like every team in every game is out there to try and win...apart from that Denmark v France carve up in the group stages!

If Neymar wouldn’t have been holding and shielding the ball between his legs wasting time then Layun wouldn’t have needed to go grab it from him. That was not a stomp, it was clearly accidental and there was no real downward pressure. His delayed reaction to the pain from it is evidence of that. He was wasting time and saw an opportunity to waste even more time. That’s why no red card was given. It was reviewed and the refs agreed it was just more anti-football nonsense from Neymar.

Brazil plays like this pretty much.

Again, I totally agree. You are bang on with your assessment!

I was really bored during the Sweden-England match. If Russia wins today, I think you are right, again, and an England-Russia match will be a snooze fest. First goal wins kinda thing. Maybe they’ll play so conservatively that it will be decided by penalty kicks. But more likely, it will be decided by a mistake or own goal. Russian snipers will be in the vicinity protecting the fans and players from any terrorist threats. I wonder if that subtle reminder to Croatia will affect their game. Goodness. I’m sure there was a time and place (East Germany & USSR) that players could fear for their lives if they beat the home squad. Ugh.

Honestly I think the Russian players are in more danger if they lose than Croatia is if they win.. Croatia just scored. This game has been exciting so far. I did think welp, here we go, Russia scored first now here comes 50 minutes of defending but now the game is open again.

Yeah... the Sweden English game was a bit boring. I was doing paperwork through most of it.

It didn’t end they way I’d hoped, but it was a thoroughly entertaining match. Funny how the Brazilian ex-pat cum Russian citizen is both the hero and goat. Meh. The team should be proud of what they accomplished.

It’s now France’s or Belgium’s trophy to win or lose. Anything can happen and that’s why the game is played, but those two teams just seem to be stronger sides than both England and Croatia. I guess we’ll find out in eight days.

Fucking Awesome, England 2 Turnips 0. We fear none, this world cup is England's for the taking !
In the world's harsh wear and tear many a very sincere attachment is slowly obliterated.

Είμαι ταξιδιώτης τόσο στο χρόνο όσο και στο διάστημα
It's nice to have a genuine reason to root against England. Can't quite believe Croatia have made it to the semis.

Watched the Sweden v. England match yesterday. Not very interesting. The English commentators were insufferable, and kept referring the to England team as "we" and "us", on the BBC. People wonder why those of us from the rest of the UK get ticked off.

Belgium v. Croatia final. Would be lovely to see a team that's never won it before lift the trophy.

I could get behind that myself. One of the nice things about having no national stake in the World Cup (My country, Canada, is rarely there and my wife's homeland, China, is much the same) is I can kind of pick and choose who to cheer for without upsetting any local patriots.

That should be the same in Scotland, but we still get labeled as petty, jealous separatists if we don't cheer for England.

I'm actually gonna be in England for the semi-finals. Can't decide whether to go cheer on Croatia at a bar, just to wind up the locals, or to hide out in my hotel room.

That's hilarious! I missed that. That "we" and "us" usage reminds me of hockey moms here.

"We" played a great game. Did you now? I didn't see you on the ice.

I'm still mourning Russia's loss. Like Seeker, I really don't know who to cheer for. I just want good matches. Whomever wins, there will be a story spun to reflect how they overcame insurmountable odds. Yet, they surmounted them. Sounds sexual. Good stuff. Be safe. If you go to a pub and cheer for Croatia, you might not make it to your hotel room. Maybe, go to a Croatian bar. Do those exist where you are going? Now that could be fun!

It was just insanely biased. In the half-time analysis, they literally didn't talk about Sweden at all. At one point they said, "England have twelve and a half minutes left," and I literally said out loud, "Aye, so do Sweden!"

I don't think I'll find a Croatian bar in Birmingham. Maybe I'll just go watch quietly in the corner, and slip out before it all kicks off (which it will, regardless of the result).
Well, it's France and Croatia. Whaaaaat????

Thought Belgium was going to continue with their winning ways. Wrong. Part of me was pulling for England. Wrong. I wanted to see
the overflowing patriotism (if that's what it's called) from both sides, and not just the announcers. Not going to happen.

But now that it's Croatia, I want them to win. I have nothing against France, except it's language being forced upon us
here in Canada as a dual official language, but that's another story for another day. Bilingual. Sounds dirty, doesn't it? Cunning Bilinguist.

I also like Croatia because their player's names all sound like or rhyme with radish. Easy for me to remember. I think they even have a radish on the team.

And hats off to Russia. They have organized and conducted a fabulous showcasing of the world's most popular sport, next to skirt chasing, of course.
I wonder if anyone will take credit for the event's success? Someone who will be around that part of the world 'round about that time? Hmm...

Love, LOVE, LUV those big ass gold doors in the Kremlin. Super impressed with the hinge strength. Hmmm... that sounds like a political metaphor.
...and the neighbourhood is quiet once againTFFT

I dont think the English players have anything to be ashamed of. They did really well, but were beaten by a better team. on the day. It. wasnt down to an unfair desicion, or a penalty miss for a change. Well done England. Better luck next time.

Congratulations France!

Thoroughly enjoyed World Cup 2018. Croatia should be proud of their performances. Russia did a great job hosting the event.

Only 8 more years until, hopefully, 10 or so 2026 World Cup games are hosted by Canada.

I'll be there, volunteering...

Viva la France!
