To put these statistics in perspective, they correlate to:

South Africa - 1 person in every 837 is
Australia - 1 person in every 1,287 is
Canada - 1 person in every 1,364 is
USA - 1 person in every 3,322 is
New Zealand - 1 person in every 4,695 is
UK - 1 person in every 7,042 is

Murder

South Africa - 1 person in every 2,016 is murdered
USA - 1 person in every 23,809 is murdered
Australia - 1 person in every 66,667 is murdered
Canada -1 person in every 71,429 is murdered
UK - 1 person in every 71,123 is murdered
New Zealand - 1 person in every 90,090 is murdered

I've only picked out here those countries that the majority of Lush readers reside in. And of course, these stats are based only on what has been reported to authorities, so they are not going to be toally accurate.

stats do NOT a country make!

I quite agree that stats do not a country make, Lois. But they are an indicator. C.

Please just drop it now...it's like this okay ...I might not like a family member and can slag that family member off if I like but if someone who isn't family does the same I would stick up for that person..it's the same with the country...but before I get mad because I am getting mad I'm going to be positive and give you 10 positive things about South Africa in no particular order

1)South Africa is the first country in the World to have voluntarily abandoned its nuclear weapons capability.
2)South Africa is a middle income country with a strong emerging economy -the 25th largest in the world -and produces more goods than Portugal, Russia or Singapore. It also has Africa's biggest economy, three times larger than Nigeria or Egypt.
3) Nelson Mandela(enough said)
4)South Africa has the lowest cost of electricity in the world and the lowest cost of living compared to the worid's major cities.
5)South Africa was identified by the US Department of commerce as one of the worlds top ten Big Emerging Markets (BEM's). With this designation the department of commerce has recognised the enormous potential that exists in South Africa for US business. It is expected that by the year 2010 the BEM market share will be larger than that of the EU and Japan combined. Clearly the BEM markets are the commercial investments of the future.
6) table mountain
7)The Kruger National park
8)Garden Route which is the most beautiful stretch of the coastal regions within South Africa [/img]http://www.executiveadventuressa.com/UserFiles/b_bild78_0.jpg[/img]
9) South Africa is the current Rugby world cup holders
10) The first human-to-human heart transplant was performed by cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard (A South African)in 1967

Lois, please don't be upset, or mad. I'm not attacking South Africa (in fact I have several very good South Africian friends - albeit ones that moved to the UK because they feared for their safety in SA) - and if you look further up this thread, you'll see I was actually defending the country's culture. I'm certain the country and the people have much to be commended. And what fantastic wildlife, too. Although, I have to say, that giraffe is fucking huge ... look, that car only comes up to its knees.

I don't think that the giraffe is that big, I could very well be wrong. However I think it's just perspective, the car is farther away than the giraffe. Although I could be mistaken.

And lois no offense but no one cares about rugby Just kidding of course.

[quote=and I hope Dominica is actually The Dominican Republic, or that's 7 countries, at least, that I never knew existed.

NO ..they are different

Dominica, (French: Dominique) officially the Commonwealth of Dominica, is an island nation in the Caribbean Sea

The Dominican Republic is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region

LOL Charley. I don't think some people "get" the English humour, it's a little too subtle for some people.

I don't see criminals being in much harm by living in South Africa...

The problem is ignorance, a total lack of education. Parts of Africa are modern but lots of places over there are 1000 years behind us in the evolution and growth of civilization.

I would say we want to go back to that. Microwave ovens never did us any good.
