I've been listening to Mercury Rev this week, had forgotten what a great band they are.


The Peel Sessions team often did a better production job for a band than the album producers — this being a case in point.


Even after all these years, I still miss listening to John Peel of a night.

I use to listen to the John Peel sessions. I'm "only" 32, so I was around 11/12 when I first use to listen on the radio at night, but it was great discovering new music.

Thanks for posting here, Emma. I think that's great that someone from your generation remembers John Peel. When he died in 2004, he was sixty-five, which is the the age I am right now *gulp*. He would eighty-one if he had lived, and am sure would still be serving up new music to an eager audience.

More bands than people might realise got their break by doing a session for his show, or having their records played.

Just found this recording of the John Peel show from 1967. Co-hosted, I think. Not sure who the other guy is.

Jeez! I was twelve when this was broadcast. Pretty much the age Emma (above) was when she first heard him).

It was a good couple of years of music for me. I'll have to check out some of the sessions and relive my youth.

My thoughts exactly the first time I listened to Mercury Rev.

Name a bandwith with any creditibility and they probably did at least one Peel session.

Joy division did two recordings in 1979.

You've probably seen, Control? Apart from being a great movie, it gives an authentic feel of the UK in the mid-late seventies — as I remeber it, that is.

FWIW:

I used to like Love will tear us Apart, though I now like the Michael Gira and Jarboe covers better.

She's lost Control almost immediately makes me think of Guess Who's She's come Undone.

That "Don't walk away in silence" song is fickin' haunting in a good way.

I love Transmission as I've been listening to radio these decades.

My fav New Order song: Everything's Gone Green.
