Just popping in for a tea and a wave!

Spent yesterday getting the house ready for my brother’s return. Did some deep cleaning in the kitchen while I was at it.

Managed to start reading the comp stories since mine is now published. With as many entries as there are, I doubt my little story about phone sex has a chance in hell of winning, but it should still be very entertaining for readers. Speaking of hell, though, OMG Kimmi’s is soooo good! I’m on my phone or I would grab the link to hers and post it here, but it is a MUST read!

I’m going to watch my youngest and her man compete in a cross fit competition tomorrow. It reminds me of the old days when we would drive hours to take her to dance competitions. She was all set to be a professional dancer, but became an aerospace engineer instead. 🙀🥰 So, it will be fun to go watch her compete again, even if it’s on a different kind of stage. 😘

Well I gotta grab and go. My neighbor needs me to let her plumber in. (Why does that sound like a premise for a new story? Haha)

Good thing I did the yard work yesterday. Right now, it is probably raining just as hard as when the remnants of Beryl rolled through last week. Took my lawn two days to dry out enough from that for me to consider mowing it.

Yeah, I was just shaking my head last night. Sadly, I was not as shocked as I should have been. A heated campaign and an outspoken candidate in a country just dripping with firearms is a terrible combination.

I’m same, Mr Ape, not as shocked anymore.

the shooter was, apparently, a 20yo man and a member of the GOP so this could get interesting. and sorry, I mourn when kids are shot in classrooms. had Trump been killed? well, as my wife said, 'would you have objected to Hitler being assassinated in 1936 if you knew what was coming? and honestly, I think we can all see what is coming at this point'.

From a dear friend in Texas, still without power.

Well it’s officially been a week without power and we have learned a lot about how to live off the grid. We hope to have power in the next 48 hours but, we don’t know for sure. The number one challenge has been to avoid heat stroke, from there it’s been the work it takes to keep gas generators going with fresh gas, oil changes and periods of rest (once you begin hearing about generator fires and explosions each day you use one you get just a little more paranoid).

Those around us with Generacs have had their own issues with getting maintenance (every 24 hours of run time you should change the oil) and many with breakdowns that left them scrambling because they 100% believed their whole house generator would work.

For an extended outage, if you have to shelter in place then I would recommend the following based on what we have learned so far:

1. Have a reliable gas generator of at least 3500 watts with a tank of 4 gallons or more. Have at least 15 gallons of gas ready, in the days following a disaster gas pumps won’t work. Then when they do, there are lines miles long to wait through.

2. Supplement the gas generator with a solar one, at least 2000 watts but get more if you can afford it. This has been an amazing life saver for us at night and when we need to rest the gas generators. It’s also nice to have some silence - 7 days of generator noise is maddening. These recharge on sunny days in about 3 hours per 2000 watts but when it’s cloudy out, you can’t guarantee a reload by Mother Nature. You can use your gas generator to recharge in about 1.5 hours per 2000 watts. Less than a gallon of gas to get up to 50 hours of battery time.

3. Get a 14 gallon portable gas tank with fill hose. Use Stabil to store the gas for extended periods. Get a couple of gallons of SAE 30 oil, it sells out fast in an emergency.

4. Battery operated fans and low voltage DC motor fans are awesome! Dreo makes a phenomenal fan that uses 24 watts of energy (a box fan uses about 120 watts) it will keep you cool and minimize draw on your power sources.

5. Get a few Damp Rid dehumidifiers and place them around the house, the humidity will get you as much as the heat.

6. Have at least 2-3 coolers that are great at keeping cold for 3-5 days. Getting ice daily sucks. We have an ice maker but it can’t keep up with the need if you have food you wish to keep cold. You can plug your fridge into the generator but it will suck up fuel you may want for keeping your body cool.

7. Get a portable AC unit. You can run these in a smaller room at night to have a cool nights sleep. The one we bought can go for 7 hours or more on a 4 gallon generator. I’d rather have this than a fridge plugged in.

8. Cash! Get at least a few hundred dollars in cash, for days it may be the only payment stores will take with the power out.

9. It’s the little things….cooling towels, instant coffee, lots of battery operated lights with warm colored bulbs, a radio - mobile internet phone service was non-existent for 3 days and remains spotty, batteries, charcoal and propane so you can grill your meals and heat water, fill your bathtubs in case water is impacted (so you can use your toilets and wash clothes!), good extension chords and splitters, fill up all your cars and get a siphon kit in case you need the gas for your generator, battery operated Carbon Monoxide detectors, take cold showers to stay cool AND shut off your breakers to your major appliances so you don’t risk damage from a surge when power is restored.

I’m sure I missed a few things but, we are surviving fairly well thanks to the above!
