Veteran stage and film actor Sir Ian Holm, who played Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings films, has died at the age of 88.

Sir Ian, Oscar-nominated as the coach in Chariots of Fire, also played the android Ash in 1979's Alien.

"It is with great sadness we can confirm that the actor Sir Ian Holm CBE passed away this morning at the age of 88," his agent said in a statement.

"He died peacefully in hospital with his family and carer," he added.

Sad news. RIP, Sir Holm, and thanks for entertaining us.
Such very sad news. Oddly, I had just recognized Ian Holm in a movie I saw last night, The Aviator.

Rest In Peace Sir Ian Holm
This guy gave us so many incredible characters. Sure, the elder Bilbo, but also the crazed priest in Fifth Element, the Italian restaurateur in Big Night, King John in Robin and Marion. He gave us all so many gifts. I shall miss his soul on he big screen.
I think I first encountered Holm as Ash, the treacherous science officer in Alien. Another role of his I recall was Game, Set, and Match, a spy serial on television based on a trilogy by Len Deighton. He was a marvelous actor in anything, in my experience.
Excellent actor. He often played emotionally cold characters and villains (Napoleon, Himmler, Polonius) on the big screen and the small screen. A great Shakespearean too, he will be missed.
