For computers - just as bad a thing as for we humans. We know when it is happening to us & then we alleviate it by implementing different methods. You don't really know when it is happening to your computer, unless you have an application installed and then activated to tell you when it is time to address the issue.
This nifty little free program, will assist you with keeping your CPU happy & healthy. I tossed a $20 donation to the developers last year. The download is also free of malware, adware & viruses.
Heat is the number one killer of laptops, notebooks, tablets, desktop computers & servers. I would imagine it shortens the life of smart phones too.
Think about all the crud that can flow into those machines. Dandruff, dust, pet hair, smoke, and general air pollution. All that crap clogs up air filters, or gets into the machine & coats the electronics inside...making it more difficult for moving air to flow over the hot electronics and cool them off.
Your machine might be working one moment and then suddenly blink off...and it's only dead because inside the chassis it is beyond filthy. A pc shop will charge you $100-150 to blow out the innards with compressed air, and you're back in business. Of course you could clean your equipment yourself every 3-6 months and keep some cash in your bank account for those Lelo products you covet.
Install Core-Temp, activate it...and then minimize the larger main window/tool...and all that remains is the info in the lower right corner of your monitor screen.
The temperature for every CPU core your machine is running. As read here - 87F (30.5C) across all four cores.
The speed (in decimals) of your processor at a given moment. Here that is 800 megahertz (my pc is at idle now)
The number (in full integers) of how much CPU (the load) is being utilized at any given moment. Averaged out, roughly 4% under load.
I've got mine set for Fahrenheit. It can be set for Celcius. Once 158 F is reached - this program will turn off my PC to protect it from overheating and destroying the quad-core CPU. That's only happened once in the last two years, thank gawd - and it was maxxed @ 100% load across all 4 cores (clean) and creating an animation...working hard in a warm room.
