I got funny looks from my two when I mentioned a jukebox - I had to explain that it was like a GIANT ipod that you put money in to play a vinyl record, or later, CD...

Honestly, they looked at me as though I was mad

Funnily, one of my sisters recently bought her first car and the stereo in it is a cassette deck - I gave her a load of old mix cassettes I'd made up (some from almost 30 years ago) I had quite the trip down memory lane, listening to them before I passed them on to her!

I have a huge collection of old 45 records -- many handed down to me by my Mom and many picked up at flea markets, yard sales, etc. I keep looking at the jukeboxes and want to buy one but they are always so expensive. The best ones also come preloaded with 45s already.

there is an old 50s style diner near here that I have been to a few times. They still have the old type that sit on the tables and you can play music from them -- instead of having to go to the big one.

First album I bought...

Was reading Rolling Stone magazine, when still relevant, and they had a top 100 albums list. This is the one that got me.

1st Album given to me...RUSH...Exit Stage Left. I like when others share.

Got it at Sears, my parents did not like it. I forget what the B-Side was.

I was 14 and had my first job -- working with my dad all summer for the plant he was head of maintenance for. I bought several CDs at the end of the summer all at one time. Even back then my music taste was ecclectic. I still have all of them today.

Kenny G - The Collection
Aaron Neville - The Grand Tour
Shania Twain - Shania Twain
Abba - More ABBA Gold
Bette Midler - Experience the Divine
Barbra Streisand - Back to Broadway
Meat Loaf - Bat Out of Hell II

and 3 Eagles CDs I had always wanted -- their 2 greatest hits and their live CD

They were the first CD's I ever bought with my own money. As I said I still have them today, but none of them are the originals. Most of them got broke, lost or just scratched.

CD's!!! um 33's, 45's or 78's in my day ...

I showed my son an old jukebox recently. It was in Gold & Silver, the pawn shop where Pawn Stars is filmed (we visited when we were in Vegas in March). He thought it was kind of neat, actually.

And mix cassettes ... I remember making those from my records, my dad and brother's records, and records I borrowed from the library back in the day. I think I had several of them made up at one point on various themes. Classical, movie music, popular music, etc. All lost to history, I'm afraid. I think the last one I made was for our wedding reception. I just picked the music and my brother did the dubbing.

I can't tell you how much time I spent making mixed tapes off the radio. Always commercial blurbs at the beginning or end of the songs. So excited when I got my double cassette boom box.

Great thread, Nikki!

Oh God, Me Too!! Me and my friends would make mixed tapes and listen to them on the beach or we would hang out in the park at night, play Frisbee and well, do a few other things too, HAHA! Living in NY most of my life, we had the worst radio stations unless you liked Top 40 and dance music so the mixed tapes saved us from the evils of BAD MUSIC!! LOL

Rush....their first album....I remember staying over night at my buddies house and watching don kirshners rock concert late at night and seeing a new band from Canada called Rush. My buddy and I went nuts over these guys. Went downtown on the city bus the next day and bought the album....I remember all my other friends hating the album saying these guys will never go anywhere....hmmmm

KoRn's Follow The Leader. It was the album that got me into them, and is still considered by me, to be a great album. Since then, they have made better and worse albums, but that one will always kick ass.

I assume birthday money counts?

I thought Shirley Manson was the coolest. My friends and I used to dance and lip synch to this album nonstop while playing it like we were supervixens-in-training. So embarrassing.

I loved Shirley Manson.

My first were actually two bought at the same time: Ozzy Ozbourne, No More Tears, and Metallica, the black album. Both were cassettes. My first CD was this Garbage CD.

I'm pretty sure it was The Black Crowes - Three Snakes and One Charm CD

I did end up with my parents old LP stereo in my room growing up and my dad's old albums, The Clash, REM, The Cars, Led Zeppelin, The Allman Brothers Band, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, Van Halen, Johnny Cash, The Sex Pistols, Adam Ant, Lynard Skynard, UFO, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Mother's Finest, Marshall Tucker, Wet Willie, B.B. King, Waylon Jennings, J. Geils Band, Pink Floyd, ZZ Top, Widespread Panic, etc. I listened to them all the time, so I love that old stuff.

My brothers first was dookie. He played it nonstop, blasting down the hall towards my room. I still can't stand green day! (I liked their music until he bought it)
