Guns n Roses - Knocking on Heavens Door. Not necessarily better than Bob Dylan just very different and great. Ditto Green days version of John Lennons Working Class Hero.

Love the GnR Knockin'.

I don't think I've heard the GD cover of "Working Class Hero" but I shall hunt it down. I blow hot and cold on both GD and Lennon so I shall see if this one is a "hot" or a "cold".

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

One of the most covered artists has to be Leonard Cohen. In fact, "Suzanne", one of his first songs, was a hit for Judy Collins before it was one for him. And K. D. Lang knocked Hallelujah so far out of the park, even Cohen himself started using her version as a baseline (and I heard her sing it again a week or two ago when the CBC broadcast the tribute to Leonard Cohen organized by his son in Montreal). Alas, he is no longer with us, but his songs will likely continue to live on as new artists discover and record them.

This is my all-time favorite version. She sung it at the Juno Awards, in Winnipeg that year, I believe. I do miss that feisty fucker. He had a great sense of self and humor. The anniversary tribute concert is scheduled to be shown on CBC in January. Great choice!!! G

I'm not a big fan of cover versions but one that I do love is a cover of Bob Marleys "Redemption Song " covered by Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer together. I LOVE their version

( I can't figure out how to post you tube link from my phone)

===========================

When it comes to Johnny Cash, he had an uncanny ability to take just about any song and make it his own. One only need to ask Trent Reznor about his reaction to hearing Johnny Cash's version of "Hurt". He reportedly said, "thats no longer my song". There are a number of great covers throughout his career, and his American Recordings, with producer Rick Rubin, produced a whole new treasure trove of covers. But its what was left on the floor, and released posthumously in the box set "Unearthed" that is such a goldmine of recordings. 3 discs of covers, many recorded by Johnny alone, others with a myriad of great singer songwriters, including the aforementioned Joe Strummer. The 4th disc is technically covers too, but all gospel and spiritual songs, not really in line with what we are talking about.

I'm like you, and its rare that a cover version comes anywhere close to the original. But its also a judgement call and not everyone will ever agree. (Someone mentioned the GnR version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door for example.. I would mention it as an example of how poor a cover can be.. so be it).

Of all the covers Cash did in the latter stages of his career, this is my favorite. A cover of the Marty Robbins country ballad, in my eyes far superior to the original.

P.S. no idea how to embed a youtube link from my phone either. Posting youtube to walls and blogs, no problem. Embeddng, cannot find the link.

One of my all time favourite covers, Prince's Nothing Compares To You, by Sinead o'Connor

You know what, you're right! I think Johnny Cash must be the only person who can successfully cover any track, I wouldn't necessarily call myself a huge fan of his, but he is captivating.
I hope you listen to the version of Redemption Song with Joe Strummer ( I am a fan of Joe and think their voices compliment each other very well )
As you said , it's probably a personal thing when it comes to liking covers , I don't think I like any of the ones mentioned so far in the thread ! Though because I'm irish I'll have to give sinead o Connor her dues for the Prince cover . smile

For now, a last one from me. Originally a country song by Dolly Parton, but Whitney Houston's version of "I will always love you" made the sound track from "The body guard" a world wide hit

It's been about two weeks since my partner left me due to my obsession with Sinead O'Connor.

In fact, it's been seven hours and fifteen days.

To be completely honest, I never even knew it was a cover until Prince's passing, and I think she does a brilliant job.

The First Cut is the Deepest by PP Arnold. A much, much better version than Cat Stevens ( who wrote it ) IMO.

Consider 'Heat Wave'

The original by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, or
the cover by Linda Ronstadt.

Both very good, but I prefer the Motown original:

Still a no to all the covers mentioned

Actually, that is the Juno performance that I posted.

To be honest, I've always liked John Cale's version from the I'm Your Fan tribute album with KD second.

Another fave Cohen cover of mine (yes, that's the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar).

I think it is a mark of Cohen's power and skill as a songwriter that there are so many great covers of his songs around. People line up to cover Cohen songs as we saw at the tribute concert his son organized a couple weeks ago (which, besides Adam Cohen, included Lana Del Rey, Sting, Elvis Costello, KD Lang, and more).

I think preferences for covers really depend on your musical taste in a lot of instances or what you heard first or perhaps even the memories you associate with them. There are so many covers that I love, that I grew up not realising were covers. For example "Power of Love" is so powerfully done by Celine Dion and I was brought up listening to it and never knew it wasn't the original. "First Cut Is The Deepest" I thought for a long time was a Rod Stewart original. Love both version of The Eagles' (original) and Linda Rondstadt (cover) of "Desperado".

I'm always open to a listen because I enjoy seeing how an artist can recreate something and really make it their own. I love this The Living End cover of Tainted Love, but then, I just love their style in general.

Love, LOVE, LOVE... Devlin's version of Watchtower. First heard it as the theme song for
HBO's, The Young Pope. The post below this one has the full version, but I love the opening credits.

Definitely an interesting and contentious topic. Personally the major thing I dislike about covers is when someone re-records a song (releasing it as a single) and doesn't actually do anything different with it, almost copies and pastes! A case in point being Handbags and Glad Rags, Rod Stewart and Stereophonics...

that is as opposed to Voodoo Child by the Legendary Mr Hendrix and also by the lesser known Rogue Traders

Love them both.

As for possibly the best ever cover... the Scottish National Anthem, Flower of Scotland
