Holy Crap a football related post! :O ... As much as i want England to win, after tonights performance i can't see it happening - and besides the lovely Rachel Riley predicts that Chile will win, and at 50/1 it would be crazy not to put £5 on it ;)

I've had to endure listening to several conversations about it recently, so I thought a few here would probably care!

I couldnt agree with you more. I remember that also. A fucking farce.

One man can make a difference, so dont overlook Spain and Lionel Messi.

Thank you I'm glad you agree it was a farce. Agreed Spain also have good chance.

@ JohnSmith Thanks for the tip £5 on Chile to win it is then xo

Brazil it has to be - rarely let down for quality players, home support and familiar surroundings plus acclimatized with the temperatures.

Spain may be the strongest of the European qualifiers - also familiar with playing in the heat.

Germany normally start strong but often fade away with poor performances.

Italy are often void of quality but are stubborn so and so's and often claw their way to the semi's - it wouldn't surprise me if they reached the final.

My lovely home country of England are just too weak at the back - I'd be surprised if they got through the group stage - but who knows.

Look out for a few other teams to spring a surprise, Chile look a tough outfit and are also full of home grown talent that play in their own country. They too are used to the heat.

My prediction?, somehow I believe the route takes both Argentina and Brazil to the final without meeting one another hmm - say no more.

Nobody could have analysed the whole thing better then this. Very well done.

Don't rule out Argentina.

Brazil might find the weight of expectation too much for them. They should have the measure of all the teams in their group, Croatia and Mexico both required play-offs to qualify and Cameroon are still relying on Samuel Eto'o in his fourth world cup for their goals (would have been 5 but they missed out in 2006) though look out for German born Choupo-Moting.

Brazil's path through the knock-out phase could come a cropper depending on what happens in Spain's group: Chile are a strong South American side and could make things very tricky for Spain and the Netherlands (sorry Australia, can't see you doing much more than making up the numbers on this one). Whoever finishes second in this group will almost certainly face Brazil in the first knock out round - if Spain slip up against Chile then it could be them.

England's draw looks tough and it is - it has the highest average ranking of all the groups and a total of seven world cups between them. That said, Uruguay were disappointing in qualification and although they have true world class players up front, they're useless at the back. Italy are out of sorts and out of form but of course, they're Italy. Coming out of this group they will face the teams in Group C - none of whom should give too many nightmares. After that it's the quarter finals and we all know what happens there.

Argentina's draw has been very favourable and they should proceed comfortably to the quarter finals where they're likely to face Belgium. Yes, Belgium - believe it or not they're fifth favourites to win. They're meant to be the tournaments dark horses - this is mainly down to them having a hell of a lot of premier league players in. Realistically though, they have far too many Tottenham players to be taken seriously.

I personally think Belgium are going out in the 2nd round to the runners up from Group G - which after England's group is probably the most interesting - Germany, Portugal, Ghana and USA. This will probably be Ronaldo's last chance to make a real impact on the world cup and I reckon he's going to really turn it on for this one. Germany have a heap of talent but have a problem up front; with Reus missing they might have to fall back on the 2006 partnership of Klose and Podolski to get their goals. Ghana v USA on 16/6 will be well worth a watch - the winners could well sneak though out of this group, a draw suits neither.

So yeah - likely semis are Brazil v Germany and Spain v Argentina - don't be surprised if that gives a Germany v Argentina final.

My head says Argentina.

COME ON ENGLAND!

Maybe I would have to eat my words but I disagree with Spain taking home the cup.

I'll say in order : Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Spain, and England.

hmm we should have a trifecta forecast.

Brazil 3 Croatia 1

Post match analysis.....

This match was always going to be a nervy one for the host nation...........

Hosting the tournament, rail strikes, protesters, barely completed stadiums and pitches not fit to play some of the matches must have had some impact on the Brazilian players mentally.

Having said that, they got the important three points against a well organised Croatian team that already knew how Brazil would play and were also familiar with some of the Brazilian team who also play their club football in Europe. Some very contentious decisions going Brazil's way helped them to a 3-1 victory that quite simply flattered them.

Now though it's Croatia's turn to feel the pressure as they really need to win their next match against Cameroon - the underdogs of the group, yet still a potential banana skin. Croatia played a little negative today which is understandable considering who their opponents were, but they will have to play with a bit more flair if they are to get the points they need to qualify for the knockout stages.

Summary
This result flattered Brazil - in fact a 1-1 draw may have flattered them! But there's a lot more to come from the hosts.
Croatia fought hard but were really the victim of poor goalkeeping and in the end a few bad refereeing decisions. To be fair the keeper was a little unlucky with the penalty as he almost kept it out but may have been at fault for the other two goals.

This is Lucy P. reporting live from Brazil and erm...... full of shit lol

Having a party at mine tomorrow night. There's five of us and to make it interesting we're all choosing two players from the English team, not including the goal minder. We've put in £20 each. Whoever's got the guy who falls over first wins the cash!

Mexico 1 Cameroon 0

This was the sort of scoreline that I expected from this match so it was no surprise when it finished at 1-0. The only thing that surprised me was that Cameroon finished with all their players still on the pitch!

Next up for mexico is Brazil and then Croatia. I suspect that will be the end of Mexico for this world cup.

Next up for Cameroon is Croatia and then Brazil. This will be the end of Cameroon and I can see them finishing bottom of the group without any points.

I missed this match as I will miss others so perhaps someone else can do a writeup of the proceedings.

Spain 1 Netherlands 5

Well I guess we all expected better from Spain, the current world champions, but as France found out awhile back - all good things must come to an end. You never know what to expect from the Dutch national team although Louis Van Gaal's appointment is bound to give the Dutch a an extra notch or two of quality performance and tonight that certainly seemed to be the case.

But have the Dutch performed too well too early? We shall see! They certainly deserved not only the victory but also the deficit, in fact 7-1 wouldn't have been an unfair result as they missed a few chances to score that were probably easier than a few of the ones they scored. On this form the Dutch could make this world cup interesting - but can they keep it going? Or was this just a terrible performance from Spain. Maybe a bit of both, but one things for sure - there will be tougher tests for the Dutch and if they were to play Spain later on in the tournament, the score would be a lot closer.

Next up for the Dutch is Australia and we'll see what they have to offer against the impressive Chileans tonight.

As for Spain, well at least their manager now knows what he has to work on with his players - and after watching that performance - I'd say he has to work on all aspects of his team - they really were terrible, but they know what they have to do now to qualify and the Dutch were surely their hardest game in the group.

Next up for the Spanish is Chile - another hard game. I watched Chile's visit here at Wembley when they beat England 2-0 and they looked really good. As I type this out Chile are already a goal up against Australia inside 12 minutes, so no easy ride here for Spain, they'll have to get a result against Chile if Chile beat Australia tonight.

The commentator made a good point during tonight's match stating that Spain may be a weaker team after Barcelona's poor form in the Spanish league - I agree with that. Also the last line of defense - their goalkeeper Ilker Casillas has made some blunders at club level and brought one here to international level tonight.

In three matches we've had 11 goals and just checking the Chile match I see they are two goals up now already. This has got to be the most explosive start to a world cup for some time - lets hope it keeps going.

Hiya Kiera baby, how are you beautiful girl? Looking forward to tonights game? I love The Three Lions song - it just doesn't age and if we take the lead tonight I'll be singing it in my mind.

Well here we go again from last night........

Chile 3 Australia 1

As I said earlier on in the thread, Chile look set to be a surprise package and I tip them to do well although not considering them to win it. Chile qualified third in a nine nation group, just four points behind Argentina and two points behind Colombia so Australia certainly had it all to do from the start.

The game was hard enough to win at 0-0 with 90 minutes to play but didn't help themselves by going 2-0 down inside the first fifteen minutes. But the tough Aussies didn't give up and reduced the deficit when they pulled a goal back before half-time. Australia continued to create chances but failed to find an equalizer. Chile however wrapped up a fine win with a third goal in the last minute.

Next up for Australia are Holland and I think that match will see one team definitely through to the next round and one team definitely going home.

Next up for Chile is Spain. A very hard game and Spain will be desperate to get points on the board and erase their poor start against the Dutch. However should Spain lose......
Then we could see the final outcome of this group done and dusted before the final group games are played. Certainly a tough and nervy time for the Spanish.

The first match of today........

Columbia 3 Greece 0

Well Colombia who qualified for this tournament second behind Argentina were impressive qualifiers and Greece would have been aware of this before kick-off. Unfortunately Greece chose negative tactics rather than trying to take the game to the Colombians and it backfired on them as they went a goal down after only five minutes.

I honestly thought that Greece were trying to frustrate Colombia into a draw but that tactic soon failed, yet once Greece had gone two goals down after fifty-eight minutes, they played with a lot more quality and started to create a few chances. With almost the last kick of the game Columbia sealed a fine win with a third goal.

Next up for Colombia - are the Ivory Coast team and once again the Colombians will be favourite to win and with it, qualify for the knockout stages with a game to play.

Next up for Greece are Japan and this match is way too difficult to call. Japan themselves will play the Ivory Coast tomorrow so we'll have a better idea of the state of play with the four teams in this group by then.

Now playing are Uruguay Vs Costa Rica - the two other teams in England's group (report to come later).

Talking of Costa Rica it's time for a coffee - all my bullshit is making me thirsty!

You're thinking "piss off wiv yer silly posts!"

........ I'm enjoying this!

Anyway I just watched.......

Uruguay 1 Costa Rica 3

And what a game it was! Uruguay who were the favourites on paper or pixelated screen were well and truly turned over by the groups whipping boys Costa Rica. Myself I wasn't entirely surprised - teams like Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Costa Rica will never fear their opponents and this proved to be the case tonight.

I personally feel that over the ninety minutes, Costa Rica were not only the better team, but the most hungriest for the three points. They scored three great goals and were so unlucky with a couple of spectacular efforts. I know that someone like Suarez could change any game and he should have been allowed to play tonight as Uruguay looked lackluster and devoid of ideas. They have England and Italy to play in their next two games and couldn't afford a slip up in there first game tonight.

All in all Costa Rica deserved their result tonight and Uruguay? Well they looked poor and having had a player sent off tonight will have to raise there game against England in their next match. It is just a mute point but Uruguay only managed world cup qualification by finishing fifth in their qualifying group and that was through a playoff match.

Next up for Uruguay is England who play their first group match tonight.

Next up for Costa Rica is Italy who play England tonight in their first group match, but unlike Uruguay, Costa Rica will feel buoyed by their result and performance tonight. One things for sure....... Costa Rica sure can score some goals!

Now of course it's just forty minutes until the kickoff of the big one........

England Vs Italy............

The crowd roars, The commentator Lucy P. says.......

"And here come the teams" (hehe I've always wanted to say that!)

England 1 Italy 2

Well my lot played late last night so I'm sitting here with TV eyes this morning and a busy day ahead on Fathers Day.

Well what can I say, we played really well and took the game to Italy just as Roy Hodgson said we would. The game took off right from the start with both teams playing end to end football at a frantic pace. I know that Italy are quite often a very physical team with a lot of niggling fouls but that was not the case last night as they went about their business in the same manner as England did.

There's not much that anyone can say about the game really as I couldn't fault the effort of the players, and the game which was largely entertaining, could easily have gone either way.
The only thing that really does annoy me is the determination of the manager to fit Wayne Rooney in somewhere. Put him in where he plays, if you can't then don't play him! Don't give him a position that he can't play, that someone else can. By the end of the game his frustration was starting show and became detrimental to England's efforts to get on level terms.

Italy on the other hand played really well. They could have gone a goal or two down but the placement goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu who was in for the injured Buffon Buffoon! played really well and could not be faulted for England's goal.

Well, next up for England is Uruguay, a match that both teams need to win - and you know it's a match that the Uruguayan manager was saving star striker Suarez for. Whoever loses this match is going home and even a draw will probably see both teams going home.

Next up for Italy is Costa Rica - the other winner in the group. Whoever wins this tie is through to the knockout stages. Italy will be favourites to take the win but Costa Rica have already shown that they are no pushovers and really can score from just about any range.

Ivory Coast 2 Japan 1

This was a match that I missed as it took place during the night while I was recovering from the last match! I did see the goals and spectacular they were too. The opening goal went to Japan and was typical of their quality from long range.
Japan held the lead until the sixty-fourth minute when the Ivory Coast scored twice in two minutes. It was only fitting that the Ivory Coast came out victorious as the stats showed went in their favour comfortably.

Next up for the Ivory Coast is Colombia. A win for Ivory Coast and they're through to the knockout stages leaving the group tightly poised.

Next up for Japan is Greece and this will be a make or break game for both teams with the losing side if there is one, heading home.

Hi Rita........

I hope you're well. I'm glad there are a few people who appreciate my efforts and interest. Well Spain were given a footballing lesson and it will probably benefit them in this competition - wake them up a bit if you see what I mean. I'm expecting to see a different Spain in their next match against Chile and trust me they will have to play better as Chile are a good side.

So far at the time of writing this, we have had.......

Nine matches played, Thirty-one goals scored and no draws - pretty entertaining competition so far.

Switzerland 2 Ecuador1

Well I watched England play Ecuador in a pre-competition friendly and I have to say they were a tough team. The match this afternoon was probably the least entertaining so far but still produced three goals as Switzerland came from behind to beat Ecuador.

I thought the highlight of the match was the last minute goal that gave Switzerland the three points. With Ecuador seemingly about to score, a fantastic tackle from a Swiss player, run by another, a foul but play allowed to continue by a good Ref followed by a cross met at the near post and the Swiss had the lead.

The Swiss had slightly the better of the game, and considerably better possession so I guess that the score was about right. I cannot personally see the Ecuadoran side progressing to the next round - they seem to make themselves awkward to play against rather than being a winning team.
Switzerland I think will see entry to the next round but no further.

Next up for Switzerland is France, the group favourites - the Swiss will have to work hard to keep the game close.

Next up for Ecuador are the Hondurans, now this could be an entertaining game - possibly the best match in this group - it has all the makings of a draw. We will see.

France 3 Honduras 0

Well France picked up three points and deservedly so. But it was helped by a sending off and an own goal. Honduras were really naive with clumsy fouls and Palacios showed why Tottenham Hotspur sold him
awhile back - he really was awful. There's not much to say here - the Honduran team really struggled against superior opposition and showed non of the qualities that they showed in their pre-contest friendly in Miami against England.

The French ran out comfortable winners against a poor side reduced to ten men in the first half. I do feel that the French also are not destined to go far but I do expect them to win the group.

Next up for the French are Switzerland, the other team to get three points - whoever wins this match is through to the next round.

Next up for the Hondurans are Ecuador and I just feel that this match will be entertaining, maybe the match of the group and also possibly a draw.

Well it's goodnight from me, I shall have to catch up with Argentina Vs Bosnia and Herzegovina tomorrow but I will say that Bosnia look a good outfit making their first appearance in the World Cup Finals. A tough game against Argentina is not the best way to start but get it out of the way is what I say. I expect Bosnia to get through to the next round.

Argentina 2 Bosnia Herzegovina 1

I think this was Bosnia's first appearance at the world cup finals and they certainly didn't embarrass themselves against one of the favourites. Bosnia went a goal behind very early to an own goal which didn't help their cause, but they played well and stayed in the game creating a number of chances to score. Of course all eyes would have been on Lionel Messi and he didn't disappoint with a wonderful second half strike.

I still feel that Bosnia were a little unlucky, they scored themselves near the end, and so only lost by the early own goal but they shouldn't be too disappointed and to be honest, Argentina didn't really play at their best anyway.

Next up for Argentina is Iran, a fairly comfortable contest there for Argentina I think, and one that will take Messi and co. into the knockout stages.

Next up for Bosnia is Nigeria, not such a comfortable match as the Nigerians can be a tricky outfit but knowing that Argentina was their hardest opponents, Bosnia will set themselves up to take the game to the Nigerians.

Hi Morag.......

I hope you're well. No I didn't see piece on TV about the Bosnia squad. I have to admit that my girlfriend and I love football and when Nicola started this thread, I thought I'd just do a report on each match that I could up until the 26th of this month as I have to work abroad for a week from the 27th. It's been a lot of fun to do and I've really enjoyed the matches, although I'm really busy most of the time, so I have missed some of the build up programs and articles whilst relying solely on my own knowledge.

But after what you had just posted it sounds like the team have done even better than what I'd realised......

Germany 4 Portugal 0

Well I've been looking forward to this game all day and it didn't disappoint me or anyone else, well unless you're Portuguese of course! Germany started the match by far the better team although Ronaldo could have given Portugal an early lead if not for Neuer the German keeper. A bit of a lightweight foul in the Portuguese penalty area gave Germany a penalty that was converted by Muller giving Germany the lead in the 12th minute.

The game was very open and end to end, much like the England-Italy game on Saturday the one difference being this match had a lot of niggling moments to it. Germany doubled their lead in the 32nd minute when Kroos whipped in a powerful cross for Hummels to powerfully head home. At this point the Portuguese had totally lost their composure and in the 37th minute Pepe was sent off for the Portuguese after pushing his Head against the head of Muller after Pepe's flailing arm had caught Muller in the face.

At this point I have to criticise the Referee for being so weak. Yes Pepe's flailing arm caught Muller in the face and only just, but Muller threw himself to the ground rolling over like he'd been hit by Mike Tyson. Pepe was disgusted, lost his composure, leaned over Muller and pushed his head against Muller's. Muller then suddenly got up off the floor totally recovered from the bruising and agonising flailing arm incident and started effing and blinding at Pepe.
Of course for pushing his head against Muller's Pepe had to go but for the play-acting from Muller for the flailing arm - well he really should have been booked. Very poor refereeing as far as I was concerned, but if Pepe hadn't reacted would the referee have booked Muller for his play acting? Probably not as he Gave Germany the free kick.

Now with Portugal down to 10 men and in complete disarray, it was just a matter of Germany keeping their composure and picking off their opponents at every opportunity and on the stroke of half-time Muller doubled his strike tally for the afternoon pouncing on a poor clearance.
The 2nd half was a matter of damage limitation for the Portuguese and in the 77th minute Germany scored their 4th and final goal of the match to seal an impressive victory. Portugal were unlucky not to score themselves when when Ronaldo struck a wonderful free kick that was expertly saved by Neuer in the 91st minute but all in all Portugal were not good today and the magic touch of Ronaldo had deserted him. A poor game by his standards and the look of misery on his face when the cameras picked him out probably described a feeling that existed in all of the Portuguese players.........

No winking today I'm afraid Mister Ronaldo!

Up next for Germany will be Ghana and providing Germany keep their minds on what they need to do, then I can't see Ghana posing too many problems.

Up next for Portugal is the USA and they are a team that can cause a few problems. By the time this match takes place - Germany should be six points to the good so if Portugal wish to join them in the next round - then they had better work on a few things in training.

Iran 0 Nigeria 0

Well there's not really much to say here and the score itself reflects how the match went with so few real goalscoring chances being created. Nigeria were the favourites to win this match but just didn't do enough to take the points. Iran however will be thrilled with the draw and with Nigeria being booed off I think their fans know that they will not get through the group phase now. Had Nigeria won this match, it would have put them in 2nd place with three points and put pressure on Bosnia. Nigeria really were lacklustre and poor today.

This result will suit Bosnia more than anyone else. This was the first draw in a tournament that has given us........

12 winning teams
1 draw
41 goals

Up next for Iran is Argentina (go easy on them Mr Messi!)

Up next for Nigeria is Bosnia Herzegovina - this should really be a good match.
