Well we're coming to the end of the Group Stage of the World Cup now and it's time to take a look at what's been Happening over the last couple of days.

Cameroon 1 Brazil 4

Well I said at the beginning that Brazil would be favourites for the competition being the host nation, and although they have not been overly impressive - they have won their group even if it was on goal difference. Every team has it's star player and Neymar is doing for them what Messi is doing for Argentina.

Cameroon, despite the score played their part with possession 45% to Brazil's 55% and shots at goal 12 to Brazil's 19. Cameroon came into the finals probably a little weaker than in past tournaments and I would have loved to see Samuel Eto'o play as he has had a decent season and looked quite sharp for Chelsea.

Croatia 1 Mexico 3

I looked forward to this match and I expected better from Croatia to be honest. I watched my first finals in 2008 while I was staying in the beautiful coastal town of Mumbles. It was the European Championships and Tottenham had just signed the wonderful midfielder Luca Modric. What a player he was and Croatia looked an exciting outfit.

Six years later at these finals they have just looked tired and uninventive. A few of the players are past their best and obviously replacements for those positions have just not made the grade to be picked. Having said that, I thought they were a little unlucky against Brazil....... but not here against Mexico who were very well organised on the night. Croatia had a player sent off in the 89th minute but the game was well lost by then anyway.
Mexico on the other hand have qualified on seven points, the same total as Brazil - they look a decent outfit, very difficult to beat.

Japan 1 Colombia 4

With a scoreline like this you would be forgiven for thinking it was all Colombia. They were a well organised and tough side but the stats fell heavily in Japan's favour. Possession 61% to Columbia's 39% and a shot ratio of 24 to the 13 of Columbia's. The funny part is that Colombia only had four shots on target and they all went in!

With the half-time score at 1-1, Japan were in with a chance of qualifying for the group stages in 2nd place, but a disastrous 2nd half and a poor goalkeeping display saw Japan finally finish bottom of the group with one point while Colombia finshed top with a +7 goal difference and a full nine points.

Greece 2 Ivory Coast 1

This was a great game from start to finish. Certainly Greece look great defensively, but conservative when it comes to attack. But here they needed to produce a good mixture of both and were very successful with it too. Greece took the lead through Andreas Samaris near to the end of the first half against a very lively Ivory Coast side.

The second half saw the Ivorians pile on the pressure but Greece standing firm and countering on the break hitting the wood work twice. Wilfried Bony brought the Ivory Coast on level terms with a sharp finish from inside the area. Greece though were a determined side who were much better in defense and after snuffing out another Ivorian attack, they broke fast and upon entering the Ivorian penalty area Giovanni Sio brought down the experienced Georgios Samaras who got up off the floor, dusted himself down and converted the penalty.

I find Greece to be a very negative side at times but in this match they had the balance just right. I'm not too sure they'll be going much further in the competition though.

For those of you hoping to go to the Iceland game, kick-off has been delayed by half an hour to 8:30 due to roadworks on the west bound carriageway of the M25!

I can try to pick up where Luce has left, just so this thread doesn't go completely dead.

Nigeria - Argentina 2-3

This showed to me why I think Argentina will struggle against well balanced opposition. They struggle hard defensively being sliced open several times by Nigeria. They hammered on the door against Iran and barely got the winner. However I do still think they'll have little problems sending the Swiss home to their bank accounts and it will be a surprise if they don't make it to the semis. There they'll probably face Netherlands or Costa Rica and that's a pretty damn open game. Nigeria will be playing France and I can't see a reason as to why France shouldn't beat them. Too much strength up front for Nigeria to handle, a team that was very sloppy defensively against Argentina.

Eqcuador - France 0-0

Not the most interesting match, although France were already through to the final 16. Equador brought some trouble, although I say they deserved to be eliminated. Despite ending up with a big fat 0 I think France have what it takes to go all the way through to the final should they have a good day. They look extremely strong, although Germany in the next round will be their toughest match in long time.

USA - Germany 0-1

Germany by far the better side. Although USA had some good chances it took them 50 minutes to get going, had a ten minute spell where they were quite good and then went down again. Although they have a good chance against Belgium, I still think they'll struggle to create things against Argentina. And should they try they will have to go high up the pitch leaving them exposed to a small little dude called Messi. Germany looks solid, have done all the time despite the 2-2 against Ghana.

Algeria - Russia 1-1

Congrats to Algeria for going all the way through for the first time in history and well deserved. WOrked hard, got good chances and deserved to go through at the expense of Russia who have been boring. Capello has obviously been showing his cynical side rather than the side that can produce great football. Still believe Algeria will be hammered by the Germans though.

If you all find this post boring and crap I'll stop posting them. If you find it somewhat interesting I'll keep you updated. My prediction so far is Germany winning the whole damn thing. Germany - Netherlands in the final while Brasil and Argentina battle it out in the Bronze final

Do they ever have any bench clearing brawls in soccer? Okay, I admit I watch hockey for the fights.

I can't help but imagine doge go "wow, such tension, much drama". Brazil needed a penalty shootout to get past Chile and it was stuffed with drama. Sadly I only got to see the first half and the shootout but when you win a penalty shootout by one on the last penalty you don't have complete control of the match. Cudos to Chile for holding it up against Brasil, even if Brasil were wrongfully disallowed a goal because of handball.

Columbia went through after beating a toothless(sorry, couldn't resist) Uruguay 2-0. I didn't get to see the match but considering James Rodriquez' goals I just have to say wow. And Brazil will have a tough time beating Columbia. As I'm fairly drunk now this is what you'll get, but Brazil - Columbia will be a very interesting match where although Brazil is the favourite it is not even close to finished. Brazil might very well be out of the World Cup if they don't find a way to stop Rodriguez. It will be very interesting indeed.

Nice flop, Robben.

And yesterday Robben showed why I think he's one of the biggest cunts in football. At least Suarez didn't bite himself to a penalty, but Robben sure dived himself to one ensuring Mexico's exit of the world cup in overtime. I think Mexico were good and although 1-1 and extra time would have been a fair result, Robben made sure that we'll remember him as a diving little cunt from this world cup. No chance in hell Netherlands will get any sympathy from me now.

Then it's much more fun to watch Costa Rica win a dramatic penalty shoot out against Greece. It took time before Greece showed they could do something, but when Costa Rica finally scored and got one man sent off(wrongfully in my opinion) it set fire to things. Just before full time they battled in the equaliser and forcing extra time. Costa Rica did some good countering, but it was obvious they were getting leggy towards the end. Greece had some good chances but lacked the little bit to get it in and I think the great chance they had just before the ref blew the whistle summed it up; so close yet so so far away.

Today France had a rather comfortable win against Nigeria. THey struggled at the start, but Nigeria really didn't produce much. In the end France grinded in the two goals they needed and went through the quarter finals.

Germany Algeria has been a really entertaining match. Currently in extra time and I have to say Algeria has been better than many of the teams in the last 16 I have seen so far. High pressure up the pitch and good counter attacking has caused Germany more trouble than I'd think I'd see. I'll update when it's done, but can't say Germany's 1-0 lead is undeserved.

They put up a fight, that's for sure. Talk about drama. An entertaining first 90 minutes followed by thirty intense minutes of extra time. The way Switzerland played surely merited a quarter final, but there can be little complaints about Argentina going through. From the second half they were clearly the better team, even if Switzerland had a good first half with some good chances. The goal that broke the deadlock in the 118th minute shows how ruthless and heartless this sport can be. A good counter attack, good pass by Messi and what a cracker by Di Maria from the corner of the box and near the post. And at 121 minutes Switzerland were so close it makes you ache. A good ball into the box and from only a few meters away a Swiss player headed the ball down into the post, rebound off the post and into his legs and just outside goal. It's tears for souvenirs for Switzerland, but they should be proud of the effort they put in today.

Will be fun to watch Belgium hopefully send the united states of germany home from the cup.

GO USA!!!!

One of the best matches in the world cup so far. USA put up one hell of a match, but they just weren't good enough and Belgium clinched it in extra time. Personally, I think it was well deserved. Looking at the match as a whole USA and Belgium were evenly matched in the first half, both running high tempo and great chances on both ends, although Tim Howard was by far busier than his Belgian counterpart. In the second half it was pretty much Belgium all the way and they should have scored on several occasions, but kudos to Howard and his central defenders. If USA had gone through I would have said it Howard should be awarded the congressional MOH, but he simply couldn't hold back in extra time. I say a deserved 2-1 win although thumbs up to USA for a brilliant match.

Before today I would have agreed with you 100%. However I think we saw a bit of what we have all hoped Brazil would be, at least for the first 60 minutes or so. Thiago Silva and David Luiz looked well in the back and finally their fullbacks actually joined the game. Great attacking football, especially in the first half. In the second half they calmed down a bit trying to cruise in the 2-0 lead they had, and that's when Colombia like the little viper they are stung. A rightly awarded penalty allowed Colombia to pull one back, and despite and onslaught in the last minutes it wasn't enough.

Problem for Brazil is that Neymar who have been very important for them was carried off on a stretcher. Considering the injury was a knee in the back means it's probably more of a really hefty knock then something long term, however I'm struggling to reassure myself that Brazil could win against Germany without Neymar. Not because the rest of the team sucks, but I think because Germany is a well oiled machinery and in a match like this you need the little extra to put on behind them, especially now that Neuer has been the goalkeeper of the cup. Secondly Germany today weren't overwhelming, however they were always in control. I never got the sense that they didn't have an extra gear to put in against France, although both sides were rather poor. If Germany plays like they did against Portugal they'll send Brazil to the Bronze final.

Hi All.......

Well I'm back after trekking round Prague for a week and I'm absolutely shattered. Unbelievable temperatures, many hills climbed and late night shooting before hitting the sack well past midnight.
At this point I'd just like to say thank you to all those who sent me such lovely wishes while I was away, it really just proves what I believed...... that this is the best site of it's kind on the net.

Well back to the footy! I missed the football due to our hotel television only having three channels, but looking back now at my original first post, I think I got much of it right and we're heading into the semi-finals with Brazil in one and Argentina in the other. Their opponents - Germany and Holland are looking pretty strong so now it's Europe Vs South America for a place in the final.

It could be an all South American final or an all European final or a Europe Vs South America final, but one things for sure.......
One of these teams are without their game changing player, and that team is Brazil. Yes Neymar's World Cup is over and if Brazil are going to win this competition as the hosts, then they are going to have to do it the hard way.

Neither Brazil or Argentina have looked all that impressive so far and I believe there are two reasons for that. One is that Brazil have lost their Samba..... too many of their players are European based now and although the south American flair is enjoyed by fans around the world - if you play in Europe then the football is a lot more clinical and a lot less flair encouraged.

Having said that, Brazil have played only one European team en route to the semi-finals and that was Croatia. There other games were Cameroon and Mexico in the group stage, the impressive Chile in the first knockout round, then followed by the just as impressive Colombia and neither of those teams were mugs by any stretch of the imagination.

The semi-finals now are too tight to call really. Each of the four semi-finalists have struggled against lesser opposition (if there is such a thing now) but saved their best performances for higher ranked opposition. As far as semi-finals go, these are on paper possibly the most entertaining that we could have hoped for.

Each of these teams have a star player that they could not do without apart from Germany - they are a workmanlike team and their performances/results are not reliant on any one player. Brazil are without Neymar and for a host nation that has struggled to really look impressive - I just don't know who will come up with the goals for them.

Anyway I'm going for a Germany Vs Argentina Final next Sunday.........

Come and post your predictions, I'd love to see who you think the final will be between.

Just for the record, yesterdays quarter-final between Costa Rica and Holland was quite simply the best match so far from a tournament that has been one of the best so far.

Goodnight all from a totally shattered Lucy - back to work tomorrow!

6-0 now and doesn't look like Germany are letting up!! So, no, Brazil might get third spot but I wouldn't put money on that happening!!
