I done know why but it always annoyed me when everyone & his dog, especially fast food places (back then when your order was ready the called your name over their speaker). my first inclination was John Smith, but that was obviously false. where it came from, I don't know but when they asked my name I said Charles without thinking. when I said Smith they looked at me like I was lying. so I immediate told them "That's SMYTHE...Smith." Because after that I always made a big production about the spelling no one ever questioned my name being Smythe again. I started selling at flea markets & for safety reasons kept on using the name. when computers came along it just seemed natural to be Charles-Smythe. I've used the name so long that there are people who've know me for 30 or more years that think its my name. I've made purchases & even got credit in mom & pop stores as Charles-Smythe.
