Who played the best James Bond?

Oh, and don't give me any shit about David Niven.
That 1967 version of Casino Royale was a Non-Eon film.
Sean Connery. Roger Moore was good too but Sean IS Bond, James Bond!!

And I agree about the original Casino Royale although it was pretty funny!
Sean was the original Bond and probally the best. But I like Danel Craig's better than Roger, Pierce.

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

ok, strange answer - everyone always talked about how the one George Lazenby film was bad and i watched it out of curiousity and you know what? i thought it was one of the better bond films, and since no one else is going to vote for him, i am - George needs some love. smile

With the proviso that I haven't had the opportunity to watch the Craig films, I'd put Sean Connery as my favorite. Sir Sean got the right balance of suave and tough and was probably the first or second best actor of the bunch (Dalton is arguably as good or better as an actor but not as Bond).

I have rather mixed feelings about Roger. Too many of his movies were overblown and downright silly (*cough* Moonraker *cough*) and his Bond was a little too much of a white knight. He often just didn't feel dangerous enough to be "licensed to kill", unlike the early Connery who seemed more than believable as MI-6's top hitman. OTOH, that wasn't entirely his fault and when they stripped things down a bit, as in For Your Eyes Only (which could have worked as an early Connery film as its tone was more like Dr. No and From Russia With Love than Moonraker), he did play a pretty good Bond.

I am one of the people who likes Dalton and wishes we'd had more of him. I had high hopes for Pierce but in the end, didn't like him as much as I thought he would though he did have his moments (the opening sequence of Goldeneye where Bond and 006 infiltrate a Russian nerve gas storage site was vintage Bond). Again, the filmmakers failed him as often as he failed the part. Lazenby, for me, was forgettable as Bond but the movie (On Her Majesty's Secret Service) was actually pretty good and might have been in my top 3 or top 5 Bonds with Connery in the part.

I liked On Her Majesty's Secret Service. George was OK, something very suave about him, But he is No Sean Connery, LOL!!
Pierce had a lot of potential, he had the look, the size, but when it came down to it he was overly cheesy. Daniel I think portrays Bond the best since Sean.
Call me picky, Liz, but the pic you've used for Sean is from Never Say Never Again - a non-Eon film ;) #pedant

Sean was brilliant but Diamonds Are Forever was the worst film up until Die Another Day
George was hopeless, his only saving grace was he knew how to have a fight with the stuntmen and he happened to be in probably the best film of the lot
Roger was the first I saw at the cinema. Yes he wasn't exactly an action hero but who else could have delivered a line like "Courage is no match for an unfriendly shoe, Countess"
Tim was brilliant and should have made more, both of his films are very watchable
Pierce got to the franchise more than a decade after he should have done, Goldeneye was great but the rest got progressively worse.
Daniel, along with Tim, is the only other proper actor to play Bond. His Bond is far removed from Fleming's vision but then this is the 21st century

I'll have to go with the original - Bob Holness

I thought so, but didn't have time to check.

Had to Google for that one. 1956 radio production of Moonraker (presumably following the excellent Fleming novel rather more closely than the movie did). Wonder if it's floating around on the 'Net somewhere. Might be fun to listen to.
Pierce and I rate Goleneye as the best bond film
Interesting fact, the theme song to Goldeneye was written by Bono from U2

And The Edge, too, IIRC. For Tina Turner, no less. Great theme song and Pierce's best Bond.
Connery had an element of danger about him.He also could be suave and sophisticated,Moore was always too cute.Lazenby sisn't have the drawing power and Craig is very good

I think I deserve a pass on this one, especially considering I pinched the whole 'Bond Banner' from Google Images smile

I know I'm supposed to say Sean because I'm, like, the most Scottish person ever, but...

For me, Roger Moore is James Bond. To be fair, I don't really like the James Bond movies; I only know that he's my favourite.

Sean Connery, hands down.

My next favourite would be Dalton, I wish he'd been in more Bond movies.
Sean Connery then Roger Moore
I like Daniel Craig as the character.

The best movies were the Roger Moore era though. Moonraker being the pinnacle.

Daniel Craig now.....then it was Sean C
Ok, what the hell has happened in this thread? I go on vacation and come back to find Daniel Craig only has TWO votes?? What's wrong with you people!

He is the best Bond. Complex, dangerous, sexy. You can't convince me otherwise.

It is now with great pleasure that I add my vote to break his current tie with Pierce Brosnan. Saying he's an equal Bond to Brosnan is just... ugh. *facepalm*
I suppose Sean Connery is the best but I don't like the Bond formula writing and the stretching of believability (even allowing for the far fetched stories) for example Oddjob killing the guy to get the gold back but crushing the car so the gold had to be separated from the crushed car when all he had to do was take the gold out of the boot (trunk) and put it in the other car which he drove away with the crushed one. I prefer the stuff John Le Carr comes out with - realistic and amoral intelligence novels. Mind having stopped watching them a long time ago my judgement doesn't really include the new Bonds like Timothy Dalton. smile

Connery was the definitive Bond but the Craig movies are the best movies.

I think the original movies jumped the shark with Moonraker.

I think it happened somewhere around You Only Live Twice and I say that as a Connery fan. That's when the plots (save for OHMSS which was remarkably faithful to the book by the standards of the movies) really diverged away from Fleming's more grounded ones into the totally fantastical. If you inserted Moore into YOLT or Diamonds are Forever, they would come across as being just as over the top as anything from the actual Moore area. It was Connery who kept things a bit grounded and tolerable. The funny thing is that it was the movie immediately after Moonraker (For Your Eyes Only) that started to get things back to Earth again.
