It can get problematic.

My assumption is that people have had problems with people whispering to them if it gets to a point where it's something that needs to be advertised in their profile.

And Gav only recently made it possible to block whispers from individuals as opposed to having to block all whispers from non-friends.

And no, it doesn't hurt to ask. People ask all the time. Common courtesy and all that.

It's just a preference, and I try not to get my tits in a twist over other people's preferences.

it's always appreciated when someone asks permission first, but i don't get bent out of shape when they don't. it's not so much that they whisper, it's what they whisper that causes problems for me. if someone's being inappropriate, i'll just answer them publicly.
