What manmade creation, or piece of technology, amazes you?

Extending on Louis C.K.'s thoughts in the video above, is there a man made creation, or technology that amazes you? This can just be how much things have changed, or marvelling at a specific item. For me, it's the digital camera. It amazes me to think about how a device can take an image, turn it in to a series of 0s and 1s, and then convert it back into that exact image.

I know I have an uncle who still enjoys the fact he doesn't have to rewind his dvd's like he had to rewind his VHS tapes. I'm curious how people will respond, although I'm guessing that there will be more responses from the older members who remember life before a new technolgy was ever available.

Google Earth and Bing Maps- I can go anywhere in the world, see pics people took when they were there, and even get a birdseye view of lots of places, as if I was in a helecopter looking down. Its easy to daydream when I can just click over to Australia, or wherever.

The computing evolution, no doubt. Not just the hardware but the entire shebang.

ok im boring, but for me its the internet! i marvel how i can talk to an engineer in germany, a cute college student in canada and a man on an oil rig, in the ocean off the coast of SA all at the same time! the planet has become so small now, and being a little homebound with young kids this lets me explore the globe thru the people i meet. smile

Flash memory.

Incredibly small memory that powers an MP3 player, cell phone, or thumb drive. You can replace the battery or unplug it and the information is still there.

It can withstand extreme temperature, shock, and water depths, and has no moving parts.

"In 2009, Kingston announced a 256 GB Flash Drive available only in the UK and other parts of Europe."

That's 256 gigabytes.

Computers and the Internet are amazing but what really amazes me is the technology in the new vehicles. Side scanning collision avoidance, road condition, static traction factor, vehicle location, speed, elevation the vehicle is operating in, weight distribution within the vehicle, the air/fuel mixture required for maximum performance - the list goes on and on but they all check on whatever they’re supposed to monitor at a rate of thousands of times PER SECOND and send a report back to the on-board computer. Yes, I know, these systems are dependent on one or more computers, but even the newest software for PC’s seem to have trouble efficiently performing more than 20 or 30 tasks at one time without slowing down the operations of one or more tasks. Somehow, the engineers behind these systems have figured out a way to get their computers to run continuously in any climate, processing literally billions of bytes of input, all without a glitch. I’d be willing to bet they aren’t running Windows!!

For me, it's the "miracle" of satellite communications. It's amazing to me that 30 years ago, one-on-one communications from Miami to... somewhere in the Philippines, for instance... one-to-one communications between those two points would have meant voice only, with terrible audio qualities, having involved the intercession of three or more other people at switching points en route.

Nowadays, you can have a live two-way video chat, with sound, share digital files, share photos, and add in text messages if you want to, with no more trouble than clicking on someone's user name in Skype. Simply awesome.

A great deal of medical technology is incredible. The way a knee surgery that used to take 5 hours and leave a horrendous scar, can now be done in 2 hours with only a tiny nick of a scar? My brother has a 10 inch scar from his knee and leg repair when he shattered it at 10 years old, but now there would be almost no scarring, and the 6 month recovery time would be 3 or less. Amazing. The way a tiny device can be inserted into you and get accurate readings of damage to arteries and veins, and they can be just as easily repaired nowadays? The little device that ran over my stomach and gave me my first look at my beautiful baby girl? Just...wow.

Plus I'm pretty blown away by a remote that can all our stuff. Pretty cool.

Computer technology. It just amazes me that some one figured out a way to store so much info on a microchip and be able to retieve it at such a high rate of speed. Where would be without this technology.

Medical advances are a close second but would not have occured without Computers I do not believe.

Anything technological amazes me. I sometimes think about the balls those guys who first "discovered" America (since America was already discovered by the Native Americans). Many people at that time thought the Earth was flat, it's just the natural thing, right? But they said "what the hell, will go anyway and see what happens". We know how it ended.

Palm Islands in Dubai

From Wiki...
The Palm Jumeirah ( Coordinates: 25°06′28″N 55°08′15″E ) consists of a tree trunk, a crown with 17 fronds, and a surrounding crescent island that forms an 11 kilometer-long breakwater. The island itself is 5 kilometers by 5 kilometers. It will add 78 kilometers to the Dubai coastline. The first phase of development on the Palm Jumeirah will create 4,000 residences with a combination of villas and apartments over the next 3 to 4 years.

Residents began moving into their Palm Jumeirah properties at the end of 2006, five years after land reclamation began, according to project developer Nakheel Properties. This signaled the end of phase one of construction, which includes approximately 1,400 villas on 11 of the fronds of the island and roughly 2,500 shoreline apartments in 20 buildings on the east side of the trunk.

Nakheel Properties will mark the arrival of the first residents by bringing one of the world's largest airships to Dubai. It has agreed to a deal with Airship Management Services Inc. for a 197 feet (60 m) long, 250,000-cubic-foot (7,100 m3) Skyship 600 dirigible.

According to Nakheel Properties officials, the process of adding 78 kilometers of beach is under way, while eight of the 32 hotels on The Palm Jumeirah have begun construction, including the Taj Exotica Resort and Spa, which was planned for completion in late 2008 or early 2009, is delayed and now expected to open in early 2010. The first phase Atlantis, The Palm Resort, is scheduled to be completed by December 2008. Atlantis, The Palm opened on 24 September, 2008.

The "Golden Mile", the strip of land located along the center of the trunk overlooking the canal, is set for completion in the first quarter of 2008. The tenants started moving in 30 April 2009. Construction has also begun on the Palm Jumeirah Monorail, which will take three years to complete and will serve as a transit system between the Gateway Station at the trunk of The Palm Jumeirah and the Atlantis Station on the crescent. (Emirates News Agency, WAM).The Monorail opened May 6 2009 only using Atlantis Hotel and Gateway Towers Stations.

I was in Dubai when Palm Island was being built. It was pretty cool. The other islands are pretty awesome too. Especially the atlas one. It's crazy how a nation with so much money will chose to show their wealth.

I am amazed by technological adavances. Specifically technological aids available to visual impared individuals. A completely blind person can now use a device to make sure they don't over pour liquids, to determine paper money denomination, find out the color of their clothing to make sure they match, read a newspaper, read regular mail.. all non braille.

It's quite amazing!

I am pretty amazed that I can sit outside with my little Toshiba net book, tap into somebody's wi-fi and hang out on Lush for over nine hours without having to go in and re-charge it...
Though I might have to go inside to grab another beer once in a while, and use the bathroom, of course...technology hasn't solved that problem yet...
Pretty cool actually...

Yes they have. Coolers with ice go outside well and they have catheters for the other problem.

I was going to say, Chef...

I combined the utility of coolers with nappies, Alan.

I fashioned and built a large fiberglass chest cooler I sit in and, well...it gets a little chilly, but after the 7th beer, you hardly notice it. And yeah, swiping someone else's wifi (and then putting your own password on his router) is...technologically amazing (after beer #9).

The Muppets...LOL

Jim Henson created some wonderful 'real' characters...but since he died, they all seem to be fading out of the limelight with him...so sad.
