Readers that don't write. Do they give lower scores?

I actually don't see the point in a scoring system. Stories/poems, should be based on content, not on who is the writer. There is no such thing as "best in show" when scores are tossed around like candy. If a story gets a "3" who is at fault? One either disbands editing or gets rid of the one-two-threes. Its that's simple. That will kaput the patronizing.
Well I'm still fairly new here. I am amazed to see the support I have received in a short time for my novice offerings. I find the quality of writing superior here in general and Mods very helpful. Plus some of the characters here are compelling. (Like Steph). As far as readers vs writers, I'd assume that writers would be more supportive and less critical because they have skin in the game and understand that we are all on a journey.
i came back to read this thread because i was sure the reading would be enlightening. it didn't fail... are people SERIOUSLY cybering to get votes?! is that an ACTUAL thing? that has to be one of THE most redonkulous things i've ever heard. yeesh...

That's exactly how I feel. This forum (LUSH, in general) is full of very helpful and supportive creative writers. I'm still learning so I guess that's why I relish those scores so much.
I've also noticed that it's the non-writers that generally give lower scores. Not all of them. But, I believe it's a whole other ballgame if you write, in so far as the appreciation for the art and effort

I didn't get that at all from this thread. 'Cyboring for votes?" Not to be disrespectful, but can you clarify?

yes. in a two of the posts, cybering was mentioned. it COMPLETELY took me off guard because it's something i NEVER expected to hear. yes, i know that voting is subjective and knew i'd hear that people often vote highly for friends, but i wasn't expecting that.

Actually, if one is not getting lots of scores coming in at the same time, and one is watching the timeline, one can see what someone's score is on ones story. For example, you just gave me a 5 on my latest story. Even though you left no comment I could see when you scored. Thank you, dear Maryana.

It is pretty easy to figure out who scored you what.

@ the OP.

I wouldn't say so tbh.

I read for a few years before I published anything and I have NEVER low scored anything either before or after.

Some of us or many of us love to read, but don't write... I always appreciated their feedback and comments.

Trolls are a problem, but hey, if you're good enough to have a troll following it means you're good IMHO. That people take the time to create another account to give you 1's or 2's and never use that account again just to mess up your average.. You should be proud.

I pride my 1's and 2's and tbh if a mod has given you a decent score and some troll or non writer gives you a low score then I wouldn't worry overmuch tbh.

Still, I never found non writers to be an issue tbh.

Maybe, but I really don't see it that way. I prefer an honest and open conversation on the topic. I blog my stories too. And I put a link in my forum signature. I see nothing wrong with that. I'm sure I'm just missing your point ?

OMG NO! lol that's NOT what cybering is. cybering is slang for online sex. what you're referring to is simple marketing that is to be expected. NOTHING wrong with that.

Well, honestly I was sure you meant that but I was giving you a pass. The only person I saw that mentioned cyber anything was Mysteria and she said she'd never do that. So...thanks, but although I sounded naive, lol...I'm not ?.

Actually A_chica mentioned it first and I said I never did that.

Most of the time I think that the scores really do not show whom you are as a writer as I feel this is more of a, popularity vote, as to who has more friends, and how well you play with others, as far as communication and many times if you cyber or not with the individuals, I do not agree with that, but it is what it is...

Oh, sorry! I just knew whoever said it, said they had never and would not do that. My reaction was purely intended to point that out in a very PC way. To PC because I should've been more clear. It sounded like she was being called out as having done that, and nobody ever said anything like that. So, a_Chica never said she'd cyber sex for votes. I read the post twice as well and no body insinuated that at all

So, in s nutshell...nobody said they'd do that...(sorry, I shoulda just said it to begin with but I didn't want to call her out

Unfortunately, scoring becomes a popularity contest. It's pretty obvious. I feel if a story is verified, it should be no less than 4. One doesn't have to care for it, because writers have different styles. I write because I wish to and I don't play the patronizing game for fame. What is to be had by being a Lush celebrity? Its all a matter of truth.

not true. i verify a lot of stories that i would, if i voted, rate as a 3 - average. i don't vote often, btw, for that very reason. as a mod and a fairly popular writer, my scores tend to be scrutinized - if i actually voted honestly, people would be pissed at me, so i don't *shrugs* to get a story verified, it has to be well written and follow the guidelines. it doesn't actually have to be good/imaginative/compelling.

also, as John mentioned, i have seen authors throw tantrums here if they get less than 5s. as for myself, i appreciate being read and commented on. personally, i don't really care about the scores - i already know what number the stories i turn in deserve. not all of them are 5s, and i'm okay with that - some of them are just for fun.

first, let me make myself VERY clear: i'm not insinuating that ANYONE in this thread has done that. a_chica and mysteria stated VERY clearly that they DON'T condone the behavior. i brought it up because it was implied that it happens.

Like John smith mentioned and chica admitted to... Authors on lush are sending voters who give them a 4 scathing emails. That's so ridiculous. And people wonder why readers are shy to vote.

That's ludicrous. Those who send scathing messages to members for scoring stories a 4 should be ashamed of themselves and realise that this is an amateur writing site, not a popularity contest.

The voting aspect is a great feature of this site and people are ruining it with pettiness. And it's probably turning people away from the site as well. I was terrified when I first joined Lush, and it would have scared me off had someone had a go at me for scoring a story 4.

Some people just don't think about the consequences of their actions. Thoughtlessness -- that's what it is.

I have never sent such emails, in the contrary I thank them, and ask if they would mind telling me what I could do to improve, as I do want to improve in my writing....

I do not block any one for low scores either.

so please I ask you both to not put words into things I have said, with out really knowing what I do or don't. I have become friends that way with people. as they rather tell me via mail some of the things they think of my writing.

I never said you did. I don't know what you get up to on here, so I'm not going to speculate.

Felix make the point of saying that some people send scathing messages to those who vote their stories a 4. I might be wrong, but I don't think he mentioned you personally, and I certainly didn't.

I think it's wrong for people to be hostile towards those who vote stories 4. If you simply ask people for advice regarding improvement, then I don't see anything wrong with that.

Agreed I think it is wrong for people to be hostile or petty by blocking ... and yes I ask for advice. I welcome that advice as I am not an experienced writer.
I'm newish to the forums and I wonder if this has been debated before.

I think a 5 pt rating scale is too imprecise, and I think that going to a 10pt scale of some kind (or allowing for 4.5, 3.5 etc., which is the same thing), would allow for perhaps better voting and less "vote inflation."

Now for example, if you compare the votes to grades or percentages, a 5 is a 100% or an A+. A 4 is an 80% or a B-. that's a huge gap. I'd like to reserve my perfect scores for truly outstanding stories. But if I don't want to give a pretty good story a B-, I usually wind up giving it a 5. I think there is room for something in between a 4 and a 5, whether a 4.5 or a 9.

I think we'd see a lot more of *that* score and a lot fewer perfect ones.
Really interesting thread...

A few points... I found myself initialy agreeing with Adagio re quality of posted work, (if it's approved it SHOULD be of a certain quality...) BUT, that fails to take into account one's personal preference. I DON'T tend to vote upon pieces that don't grab my interest and consequently vote mostly 4/5s... The EXCEPTION to this is when I allow myself to be genuinely ANNOYED by a piece, by reason of content, delivery or style and then, in a frankly quite wankerish and opinionated fashion, Give It A Kicking... (I hardly EVER do that, in truth, BUT I HAVE...) Like a lot of readers, I have a few PERSONAL BUGBEARS that TRULY get my goat as it were! 90% of the time I can say 'fuck it' and drive on BUT, at times, MY ASSHOLE EGO gets the better of me!!!

(Incidentally, I DON'T THINK THAT'S A COOL THING!!! But then I'm often not!!!)

One thing I NEVER DO is vote up my friends. I ALWAYS VOTE ON MERIT ALONE!!! Who has written the piece is not a factor with me. (That said, I'll often read FRIENDS work if I notice something NEW and, perhaps unsurprisingly, a lot of my friends just happen to be BLOODY good writers... Of VASTLY different styles, for the most part...)

On the related subject, I suppose, by virtue of longevity if not talent, I am PERHAPS a 'character' upon the Lush Forum, BUT, that has NOTHING TO DO with the pieces I post. Indeed, most of my pieces GENERALLY gather quite high votes, BUT, comparatively few comments compared to some more popular writers. So, I'm read less that lots of others but liked MORE by the people who bother to read me!!! *LAUGHS!*

I HAVE received the odd, 1 - 2 - 3, and, in the comments section, IE IN PUBLIC...) I have at times (not always) DEFENDED the work... (I don't think I've EVER sent a Private Message to anyone about a LOW VOTE... I WILL sometimes PRIVATELY thank a reader for a comment I found either pleasing and/or illuminating...)

In terms of ACTUAL VIEWS/VOTES I'm NOWHERE compared to some of my favourite writers. (I've NEVER had a vote in Three Figures!!!) The EGOTIST in me, (we've established that, yeah...) excuses this by the fact that I almost NEVER spam and don't generally publicise the stuff once it's posted. But of course many of those writers don't do that either!!! I LOVE my fives and the accompanying flattering comments, (of course I do!) but the fact remains that I'm NOT a MASS APPEAL writer... I'm just NOT! I don't think I could ever even TRY to be that! (And again, some, consciously or not, REALLY ARE!!!)

In closing, I LIKE THE SIMPLICITY of our FIVE POINT system. (It's clear if one compares votes to views, CERTAINLY IN MY CASE, that many viewers simply don't bother to vote or indeed comment... The reasons for this are varied, but I can never discount the fact that perhaps many click, read two lines and then go, 'Oh fuck this!')

Oh!

( I THOUGHT OF SOMETHING ELSE!!!) Mysty TOUCHED on this...

One Thing I DON'T do as a matter of course now is read the Front Page diligently. (When I was NEW, SIX YEARS AGO, of course I did that...) After 6 Years you tend not to, I think!!! As a mod, I had to do it!!! (Mainly NOW I read stuff my friends write and I have A LOT of writer friends...)

But the SNAG with that is that I MISS a lot of newer writers!!! (That's why I always read the COMP ENTRIES because it's a HANDY GUAGE of who is coming up to bat, as it were...) I've discovered Saucymf, Simmerdown, Varrick and several others from following Comp...

I'm sure it's hard for Newer Writers to establish a readership base, but then again, we were all new ONCE... Actually, come to think of it, my first ever stories got hit much harder than anything I've done lately!!!)

So you do pay attention to the scores and number of votes... Just saying because you have repeatedly claimed that you don't. This makes more sense because every author looks to see if people are giving them votes. It makes sense to look. Saying you don't look makes no sense when submitting to a site that tallies votes, views, comments, scores etc.

Now if you had voting turned off. Then I'd be more inclined to believe that an author really doesn't pay attention to the number of votes and the score they receive. But being a bit cynical at times I wonder if those authors turn voting off to hide the fact that their scores and vote number are low.

Well, you're RIGHT!!!

(OF COURSE I NOTICE!!!)

What I DON'T DO is define how good I THINK the piece is by what views/votes/comments/awards it garners... In THAT WAY ONLY I don't 'pay attention'.

I LOVE when the STUFF does well!!! Of COURSE I do!!! (I'M A SODDING WRITER!!!)

And as I said, as Lush Writers fare, I'm not exactly in THE PREMIER LEAGUE!!!

I only know ONE writer friend who has her scores turned off!!! (Before she did that she had quite a few into the high 90s/100s!!!)

The thing is, we are SUCH A BROAD CHURCH here... We provide EXTREMLY high-end erotica, Base Porn and PRETTY MUCH everything in between... There are HUGELY POPULAR WRITERS here that I simply DON'T GET!!! (There are HUGELY POPULAR MEMBERS here who wouldn't sniff at MY STUFF with a borrowed nose!!!)

Seriously, since the GUIDELINES are so carefully drawn here that THERE IS NO WAY a posted piece could be deemed in any way OFFENSIVE to a broader readership then I think it mostly comes down to personal taste.

I LIKE when people LIKE my work. I LIKE the FIVES and the comments. I'm NOT widely read!!!

But I DON'T post ANYTHING I can't defend. (And then if you STILL don't get it, FINE!!! WE have more chanells!!!)

(I recently was accused of MYSOGYNY by a New Reader!!! Now, THAT HURT and I had to go to PM to clear that up, and, after discussion, I think I explained myself... WE didn't become friends BUT I did feel I had to answer such an accusation and so I did. The lady I THINK accepted our difference in APPROACH. Well, SHE SAID SHE DID!)

I NOTICE my scores of course. (But they don't colour my own impression of what I put out there...) COMMENTS DO!!! (I will AND HAVE defended my work...)

SOME of my best pieces IMO are among MY LEAST RATED... (If I believed in THE ABSOLUTE VALIDITY of the vote I'd remove them... And I haven't!)

A bit defensive aren't you?

You said you send emails after getting a low vote. The very nature of that, no matter how it's worded, is aggressive toward the reader. How are they going to respond? They sure won't ever give you anything other than a 5 if they happen upon another one of yours. It's like brow beating them into either giving you 5s or nothing at all.

I won't finish a story I think is a 3 or a 2 so I don't ever get to the vote button on those. If the vote button floated along while I read, then I might. Just because a story on lush is approved doesn't make it a 4 at least. Characters can still lack proper motivation and development. Plots can still have holes in them or just be unbelievable. The sex unrealistic. The sentences monotonous. All of those things don't break any rules. Just because the punctuation and spelling is correct doesn't mean the quality of writing should be a 4 or 5.

Obviously if the reader wanted to tell you why you deserve a 3 they would have done so. You sending an email to them is pretty much telling them it's not okay and to not do it to you, no matter how you veil it. It lets the reader know you were checking every single vote in your timeline and then on your story to see what it was. It's obsessive by nature and doubly so when followed up by an email and the reader that recieved it realizes this. So they probably will just give you a 5 in the future or nothing.
