I'm newish to the forums and I wonder if this has been debated before.
I think a 5 pt rating scale is too imprecise, and I think that going to a 10pt scale of some kind (or allowing for 4.5, 3.5 etc., which is the same thing), would allow for perhaps better voting and less "vote inflation."
Now for example, if you compare the votes to grades or percentages, a 5 is a 100% or an A+. A 4 is an 80% or a B-. that's a huge gap. I'd like to reserve my perfect scores for truly outstanding stories. But if I don't want to give a pretty good story a B-, I usually wind up giving it a 5. I think there is room for something in between a 4 and a 5, whether a 4.5 or a 9.
I think we'd see a lot more of *that* score and a lot fewer perfect ones.
I totally agree.
But what do you do with all the stories on the site now with 1-5 scores? Convert a 4 to an 8? A 5 to a 10?
