It's a sad day for the English language. Is this called "progress"?

I found it kind of sad as well.

I have been something of a grammar Nazi for years. Sometimes nothing depresses me more than to see our beautiful, expressive language misused for the sake of brevity and fashion. But recently I have come around to another way of thinking: language does and will change in accordance with our culture - it always has and it always will, and, like it or not, that's natural. What we might judge as a high standard of english today would horrify the speakers and writers of yesteryear. I hate textspeak, and web acronyms confuse me, but I am guilty of using them, and for me - that qualifies them to be included in the dictionary.

I weep for the loss language has suffered today. We're all doomed.

I do agree with you for the most part, but what I'm tripping over is is the inclusion of the heart symbol in the dictionary. It could become crowded if they start adding a bunch of emoticons.

Very true, in fact, it might make sense for them to create a new lexicon altogether for the digital side of human expression. These words (Words? Acronyms? Symbols?) are not designed to be spoken, the word Dictionary does come from the latin for "to say"...

Agreed. I find the English language deteriorating at an alarming speed.

Though I do have DILLIGAF patch on my bike jacket.
One day, someone came up to me and asked me what does the patch DILLIGAF mean on my jacket, I said " does it Look like I give a &%*()". They just looked at me with a stunned look.... I think they thought I didn't give a hoot about their question....

I'm with Maggie Rascal here...though I wouldn't say I'm "tripping" about it...

I'm just sort of wondering how you would even look up something like the "heart" symbol...is there a group of symbols in the front of the dictionary? Or is it listed under "H" for "heart?"...

If they start including symbols and emoticons, it opens up the possibility of including lots of other things that could be considered language...like hand gestures, for instance...

Well, it does my heart good to finally see some evidence that I'm not the only one who doesn't want to see our language devolve back into caveman grunts... which seems to be the language of choice for today's children, growing up on gangsta rap and the new, dumbed-down textbooks.

sometimes i think language is a lost art...or at least a fading one. and you know, i have discovered that when speaking to a person for whom english is a second language, they usually have a much better command of it.
