$3500

They sort of look the same, to me.

$2200
(longer warranty - same guts - same screen - bigger keyboard/more functionality, etc...)

That is a cute little two generation old glowing Apple logo though.

Of course that is a feature you would like My Grandpa loved that too on his electronics!

Oh and that Macbook Pro will outlast that PC.. So you'll spend more on the PCs and create more waste too.
I've used a range of computers and don't know enough about 'the guts' of the computer to compare, but when it comes to Mac - the keypad has a slicker, nice-design for the hands/wrists, the screen is WAY better, and the platform is far more user-friendly.

I got a high-end compaq netbook two years ago as a lighter backup to my laptop and it SUCKS. The ten billion pop-ups are annoying, and every 35 seconds it's detected some new software to run or reinstall or whatever. Compared to Mac, it just has an outdated feel... like I'm using my grandma's computer or something.

And yes, I suppose I am technically in the "generation" that is Mac-friendly, but it's not a matter of being brainwashed. If people use both and are so willing to spend the extra $ to get a Mac - what does that say about it? It's just better. It's not bells, whistles or colours. My laptop is silver. If I could get the same user-experience with a PC for cheaper, I'd buy a PC. My friends with PCs have to get a new computer every year (sometimes every 6 months if they watch a lot of online porn). Macs last a lot longer with fewer problems.

Anyway - I'm not a techy type, I just know what I like and I've used Compaq, HP, Dell and Mac... but I will only buy Apple.
i have a Dell. i've always had good luck with them, as has Kate. I don't use it for games or anything really fancy. it's how i have my internet connection, where i store my files, where i write (microsoft word), and where i keep my few art programs, like photoshop and paint. If i did a lot more with it, i might like to own a Mac, but really, i'm happy with mine, and my last Dell lasted... well, i still have it and it works, even tho it's out of date, and i think it's about 6 years old now? that's pretty good for a computer, right?

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

Programmer here.

I have a Windows 7 PC and a MacBook. There are certain things that I love about my PC that are have no equivalent in my Mac.

1. What is an application that you will always use no matter what kind of user you are? It's the file manager, right? Windows Explorer is just like a hundred times better than Finder.

2. Now something deeper. I might want to copy a video that was streamed to my browser. In windows, I can always look around and find the cached file, no matter what browser I use. Not to mention the many applications (most of them free) that will make the job extremely easy for you. This is just impossible in Mac. (NOTE: browser extensions, web services, etc. may not work with *all* websites.)

3. Tons of applications. Utility apps, games, everything is made for a Windows PC. And most of the times, when an application is available for both Mac and Windows, the Windows version works better.

4. Windows and the applications on it are easier to tweak than their Mac counterparts.

Said the above, I would like to add that there is no way one can just go ahead and weigh the pros and cons of Mac OS and Windows and decide that one is better than the other one *for all use-cases*. It's totally subjective. It depends on what the user wants, how they evaluate the way something works, and such. I have my reasons to like Windows more, but then you might have your own reasons to like Mac OS more.

EDIT: I'll tell you the latest instance when my Windows PC proved better than my MacBook. I had a lot of picture files stored in a USB hard drive. I knew there were a hell lot of duplicate images. I used ACDSee to find the duplicates and delete them in my Windows machine. In Mac, ACDSee didn't have that feature; Duplicate Finder came as a separate application. And then it wouldn't show the USB HD in the browse dialog. There isn't even a decent picture manager application for Mac OS.
I cannot believe I'm wading into this religious war...

WMM is correct: the hardware is, in most respects, the same. That is because around 2006 Apple stopped using CPUs manufactured by IBM (called the PowerPC) and switched to the the less expensive and ubiquitous Intel manufactured Pentium line of CPUs.

In reality, this forum argument is about the perceived philosophy behind the complex software known as the operating system. Some people are fanatics about Windows or MacOS or OS2 or BeOS while others are fanatics about Linux or FreeBSD or Solaris or Hurd or Plan9 or System V R4.

Honestly, does it matter? I have my own operating system preferences, but I will keep them to myself.

Seriously, get the best computer you can afford and then use the software you prefer.
For work such as email, and office - i use PC.

For all of my digital fun and creativity - MAC

Which will probably be an Apple 99% of the time you huge dope, wmm. They probably would use Macs on the enterprise too, because they are in space and they can't have those fucking pop ups 'n' shit getting in the way while trying to go into warp speed. In space, lives are at stake, so they would go with what works ALL the time. A Mac, everyone knows that.

Ummm... You might wanna have a lil read, here.

Apple Macintosh users have become vulnerable to the Flashback Trojan malware. An estimated 600,000 Mac users have been infected

While OS X was relatively void of malware for the last decade...recently malware scares have cropped up that have affected a significant number of Mac systems.

Welcome to Planet PC again, Mr & Miss Apple Snobs!

With all due respect, WellMadeMale, I detected nothing snobbish about the Mac owners' posts until you called them snobs and their computers toys. They were simply sharing their enthusiasm for machines they like and find easy to use in response to the original poster's question.

I see nothing snobbish about that, just a desire to be helpful.
It's not as if a Mac owner began this thread.
I've been using a mac for around 2 years now and so far it's made my life a lot more simple with a lot of tasks like Photo viewing, Syncing my iPhone, as well as university projects.

If you're going to use the laptop for everyday tasks, Photoshop creative stuff in general I'd say go with a Mac as it's a lot easier to use. But also keep in mind most services/apps will be dumbed down versions from the pc version and of course the giant price difference between a Mac and a Pc.

But this is just my opinion on what I like about using a Mac. And after having used a pc for a while I have to say switching to a Mac was one of the best decision's I've made.
A loyal Mac user for 10 years.
Nothing is as easy to operate and navigate than on an intuitive MAC

"The Gods that smiled when you were born
are laughing now."
PC was the first computer that I was introduced to, it was a Dell Desktop to be more specific. I really liked it because It was my first computer. It worked very good, but I didn't know a lot about computers then. I was just learning all the functions and what not. I can say that it had quite a few pop ups at times, (I was beginning to think that was normal) even with the pop up blocker on. Then I would make movies with my friend in Windows movie maker and it would crash every time I added a new clip, it just got frustrating. Every day after a while it would freeze and I had to force shut it off, nothing I would do would unfreeze it. Not esc, f4 or whatever the other option was (I forgot). I didn't go on any porn sites or other obvious websites that would cause viruses. It wasn't long before I wanted to throw it out the window. This was about a year later after having it by the way. I learned a whole lot , and I can thank PC for that I suppose!
Anyway,
Since I started going to College a while back, I encountered my Mac book *Cue Harmonic voices*. It wasn't hard to understand at all and I was impressed on how it didn't have any pop ups or anything. I didn't even have to set the settings that way. It runs a LOT smoother and faster than my Dell. I also like how it seems to 'fix' itself it it happens to freeze for a bit for whatever reason, it rarely freezes though. It runs just as fast as when I first got it. With my Dell, it seemed to run fast in the first couple of months and then slow down. As for memory, I have to say It does good, I have a lot of files that I download due to school along with photoshop brushes and what not. It hasn't gave me a storage issue yet, but that's just me. I Love my Mac book and It's way more enjoyable to use than a PC in my opinion.
Every time a family member calls me to fix their PC, I cringe. Oh, that reminds me, I also like Mac's Command button shortcuts smile I can't remember if PC had as much short cuts. They come in handy a good deal of time!
I don't know why there's all this fighting going on. It's obvious that Macs win out, get over it lowly PC lovers!

Kidding....I love the 'if you use macs you must be a right-old-royal-up-your-own-ass-snob' attitude that some people have - got to feed it sometimes, right? Give them something to live for!

For me there is nothing else to add to this: 'once you go Mac you never go back'. That says it all.

My Mac does everything I could ever want it to... I can create word docs, I can create powerpoint presentations, I can delve into the world of spreadsheets (as if I'd ever do a silly thing like that!), I have iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, my Photoshop runs smoothly regardless of how much I have going on on my puter at the time, and anything else that could ever come in useful ever, I have an INSANE battery life and it looks hot, never mind 'pretty'!

And for all this 'macs can get viruses and shit too' nonsense....let's ask all the Mac users here....have you ever got anything on your Mac? I've been using Macs for a decade and have never seen or heard of anyone I know directly (or indirectly) getting anything. I love that security. Sure, there must be something that exists somewhere that can attack a Mac, but yeah. Whereas, on the flip side, how many PC users can say that they haven't experienced some kind of virus on their machines at some point in the past? (I asked 'haven't' since 'had' would have just resulted in too long a list... )

Sure, in an ideal world it'd cost less and we'd have more options with regards to the games we can play (although it's probably a good thing we don't have that since I'd get totally suckered into the gaming world otherwise) but at the end of the day I, and every other Mac user out there, will happily pay more and put up with the small downsides such as a lack of options re gaming to use this beautiful machines.
I always find this debate fun. Where ever you see it you will always find my Apple fanboys than PC fanboys.

Apple people will always claim that their machines are so much better than the equivilent PC's, yet as has been demonstrated before they use 95% of the same components and only the OS system is different. Personel choice is then king, just make sure to get the right edition of windows if you are a PC user

So yes, on the forums Apples will win out, but if you look at the real world PC's are still about 90% of the market depeneding on which statistics you read. Surely if Apples were so much better as it is claims Macs would be dominating offices the world over?

On saying all that, if you are in the Apple brand, you have an Iphone, you use itunes etc, you may aswell buy a mac just for ease of syncing with those devices.

That's like saying 'if diamonds were so much better then why does everyone have crystals?'... not everyone can afford a diamond, or: not everyone wishes to use that kind of money on it. That's just the reality of it, would I be using mac if I hadn't had mine bought for me as a birthday present? No. I'm a student. I just literally couldn't afford it, if my MacBook died on me now I'd have to go PC, but as soon as I had the money to spare I'd be straight on buying myself another one.

I always see this debate a bit like the school vs home education debate...the majority of people have not tried both for an extended period of time (please note I said *majority* - don't bite my head off) and are making a decision having either barely used a mac or having never really used one. A bit like people who claim that home education isn't a proper education, doesn't give a proper social life, bubble wraps kids etc etc haven't been home educated themselves for any period of time or seen a selection of families do it first hand.

Naturally, there are people who have tried both and will prefer one or the other, there's no right or wrong. It's all about what you want to use your machine for and how much money you have to spend on said machine.
I simply like Macs netter because they are easier to use, require much less trouble shooting, crash much less, hardly ever freeze up, and are just much more reliable.

I came to this conclusion after having owned both Macs and PCs for years, since I was a kid.

Mac is just better.

As for computer viruses those things don't just evolve. Some criminal prick has to create those. Whatever you use Mac or PC, stay current with your anti-virus and spyware software.

PS. The company I work for recently went nearly all Mac. It was a financial decision based on the extra hours and non-productive downtime we constantly had to deal with using PCs. Employee moral is way up. We are not a small company.
I don´t really understand why this debate gets so deep everytime. Apple vs PC. The bottom line is they are both going to be around for a long time to come. Each is better at something... I don´t think apple computers are better in every situations and PC are not worst in every situation.

For example, the bank I use in brazil has a site built to function on Explorer. I cannot do my banking correctly from my apple products, the explorer available for macs is outdaded.

My lushing is mostly done with my mac toys bc its simply more fun - more user friendly.

I believe the best way to go is to have both systems - this way you are a balanced custumer.
Question for the die-hard PC-lovers out there:

Let's pretend you just won a brand new computer as the grand prize in some random Techno-Geek Sweepstakes. The computer prize is the best of the best. But you get to choose PC or Mac.

You cannot sell it on ebay later by the way and pocket the change (I'm onto you, WMM!). You have to keep the computer - so the actual monetary value is irrelevant, but just know that both the PC and the Mac are the latest and greatest versions of both.

Now... with all things considered the same and cost out the window... do you choose PC or Mac?

Come on now...be honest with yourself... you sure you don't want to try?

quite honestly, i'd pic the Mac. i have friends who do music on computers and they swear by Mac and i've always been interested in learning how to do music, so i'd love to have one dedicated for that. smile

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you are capable of violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful. You’re harmless.

I'd take the PC. Hands down without having to think about it. And I know I'd not regret it..

When the debate is lost, slander becomes the tool of the loser. Socrates
I have always used a PC. I use several different design programs for my job and have thought about trying a Mac but havent made the switch. I really cant justify it as I have not had any serious issues with PC's. Two of my daughters have Macs and always tell me I need to get with the times!!
The reason black hats are writing viruses and malware for Macs is because of how popular Macs are becoming and all the free press Apple gets. Us Mac owners should have kept our snobby, duped, expensive, fanatically appreciative, satisfied and grateful, big mouths shut.

Let's talk about all those idiots who loved the Beatles in the Sixties. What a bunch of morons!
And Volkswagen owners? Those pea-heads actually loved those stupid, ugly, long-lasting, reliable cars!

But then, it isn't quality, innovation, design, and customer service that made this economy great, is it?

...What do you mean the economy isn't all that great?
What are you, a Hippie?
I´d pick the mac!

I could always go out a find a cheaper version of a PC to have for my non mac related work. with an apple product i would have to buy and ipad, since there are only pro models available now - which cost more.

I'm a computer professional; I work with and on these things in order to earn a living.

To answer the question: I'd get the PC because it is most likely to be the faster.

Since I already have a desktop that I have customized to my satisfaction, I would offer this newly acquired PC hardware to my niece and nephew. I would ask them what they prefer, Windows or MacOS or something else, and I would install that operating system onto the shiny new PC for them. This can be done because, as has been stated before, modern Intel-based hardware can run MacOS and Windows and many other operating systems.

Cheers

"The economics of the future are somewhat different. You see, money doesn't exist in the 24th century. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in our lives, we work to better ourselves."

If that's the fricking case - I'll have four big MACs - and supersize everything else!

Isn't it sad that I remembered this quote (or that someone else did to, and placed a 1:33 video on youtube of Picard uttering the words)?

Since the internals are not really going to be the same for the souped up latest & greatest MacIntosh vs the super bad PC, I'll take the MacIntosh cuz its outside skin will be prettier. Then I'd drop another $230 for the best Seasonic 1050 watt 'Platinum' power supply, $275 for a second mid range video card & connect it via SLI or Crossfire (for dual vid cards)..remove the cheap $70.00 RAM Apple uses & throw another $220 into it for quality RAM up to 16Gb and wipe the OS X off of it and install Linux.

Then I'll call Jillicious when I have problems locating the software I'm looking for.

It will still look like a Mac when you open up the door of the enclosed cabinet of my desk to peek at it. We used to do similar things with old Chevy Vega's (which looked like they had a 4 cylinder engine under the hood).

You all know that I'm just shining you on and giving you softballs over the fat part of the plate, to knock out of the park...right?
