There won't be any backlash on this. We've all been there. It can be very overwhelming when you first join. The phrase "fresh meat" comes to mind.
Also, if you set yourself to "away" instead of "online" they can't sent those pesky chat requests. I've literally been set to "away" since the day after I joined Lush.
