The poetry below describes it very well - when I first saw this painting, at 16, I was hooked and wanted to so badly find them.
Hylas and the Nymphs
He left that fateful day to help,
The comrades left behind.
Trekked through meadow, field and forest,
Sure that he would find.
The thirst releasing moisture, most needed back at base,
Enough to fill his pitcher, for every man to taste.
The stakes were high, his worries low.
His young heart kept the beat.
The confidence of winning ways,
Assured his weary feet.
As if to vindicate his self belief, he finds a glade.
Centered in a sparse array of trees, the water laid.
A gentle pool un-moving, flecked with lilly pad and reed
And water clear enough to show the image of the leaves.
He thanks the gods above him.
No doubt this is his day.
He smiles as he envisions greetings yet to come his way.
His gaze is fixed below him as his vessel draws in water.
A subtle shift in pressure makes the breath he draws in shorter.
A dazzling luminescent glow streaks freshly rippled aqua.
A silky buzz assaults the ears that’s laced with muffled laughter.
Beneath his chest the young man’s anxious heart is struck by fear.
For all his senses tell him the surreal is very near.
He slowly raises up his head and spies this wondrous sight.
Through his eyes his chest is quelled, he’s oh so far from fright.
He finds himself surrounded by a band in female form.
He sees them poised below him and he knows they’re so much more…
The glowing flesh, the piercing gaze,
He’s lost in wonder lost for days.
Or maybe seconds who can tell?
When mind and soul abandon shell.
The sight insights his deepest needs,
The solace perched beyond the reeds.
He never knew, not long ago,
But now it’s all his being knows.
The Auburn hair, those lustrous locks,
The beauty tied in those loose knots.
Each separate gaze ensures enrapture,
Grains of sand confirm the capture.
He’s witnessed more than one can bear,
It’s left him hollow, without care.
No bell could chime, no sight be seen,
To break the spell, to set him free.
The smallest tug to seal the deal,
He’s told himself it must be real.
And even if it isn’t so,
This splendour’s all he’ll ever know.
To join them means desire’s sated,
Hands are bound for this was fated.
Follows them beyond the bottom.
Life he once knew, Long Forgotten.
