So, I am getting ready to face one of my biggest fears......the dentist. It may sound silly to some, but to me it is a very big issue.

So tell me, fellow Lushies. How do you conquer your fears?
♥ Listen, touch, and look around in the air and on the ground. If you watch all nature's things, you might just see a fairy's wings. ♥
for heights, I got on roller coasters and looked out of the windows of very high-up buildings; haven't made it to the balcony yet. Not sure if I want to get on The Ledge at Willis Tower, though.

for flying, I got on an airplane. Love it!

Keep me far away from bugs.

For freeway driving, I can go short distances for now. I haven't graduated to long-distance driving yet.

Pixie, don't worry about the dentist. I just pretend the person working on me is someone beautiful I wouldn't mind staring at.

What part of it scares you? For me it's the needles. My dentist uses "laughing gas". It helps. If I have to have something major done, he uses major drugs. Ask for them.
how do i conquor my fears? i don't know... i'm still working on it - at present, they still control me, rather than the other way around. Good luck at the dentist - i'd suggest taking or using something as a mild sedative before hand or, like was suggested, requesting laughing gas. also, make sure you have a gentle dentist! if you don't like the one you're with, find another that makes you feel more comfortable. smile

Fears? I'm a man so I have no fears! haha.

I don't really like heights, but they don't paralyze me.

for the record, i'm afraid of water - of swimming, of being on boats, of being at the beach if there are waves, of bathtubs even, when i'm feeling particularly vulnerable - i've been working at getting over it for some time now and, when in the right head space and with someone i trust, can manage that fear a little - i think it's getting better - i just keep trying to over come it - not sure it ever goes away, tho - you just learn how to deal with it better.

Do you know the genesis of that fear? If it's not too personal, that is.

Tell them upfront about your fears. Mention it to everyone you encounter — the receptionist, the hygienist, the dentist and anyone else — instead of relying on them to pass on the information to one another. Don't hesitate to ask them to give you a short break if something is really bothering you. Dentists should be trained to help fearful patients.

Best of luck.

oh yeah, i am very aware of it - it started when i was 6 and fell into a river and caught caught on a tree branch, my dad had to pull me out - i was completely submerged. and than, i had an abuse partner who played on those fears when he felt like torturing me - apparently, he found it amusing. apparently, i don't have a sense of humor. silly

Pixie, I have to get sedated everytime I get a tooth pulled. The worst bit is the injection. Just breathe and focus on something else. I love it when dentists tell you to relax when they are poking you with a huge ass needle lol...I got over my fear of flying by flying. It was either fly or don't see my family. After a few 12 to16 hours flights I got over it. I still freak out a bit in turbulence but as long as the pilot gives a reason why I'm fine.

its true..ive hidden behind many a potted plant at parties. but then one day i said "im sick of this!" and i changed it. i got a job where i HAD to talk to strangers, where i had to start and maintain conversation with them.

used to be afraid of driving on highway too so i got a job that required me to take 3 different ones to get there. In atlanta! and if youve ever driven there you know how scary it can be! lol!

Actually it is the only way to overcome a true fear is to face it headlong, there are othe way but they just are not a victorious as a headlong buttkickiing of the fear, add a lot mor excitment top the event or action!
I treat a lot of people for this kind of stuff: Panic attacks, heights, maggots, dentists, driving tests, interviews, PTSD, depression, pain relief, negative memories - you know, that sort of thing. I've been doing this sort of stuff for many years now. It's very gratifying to see someone who's been crippled emotionally in some way, be able to let it go and move on with their lives...

I use a generally use combination of EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique), flower essences and homeopathy - it works very well indeed. Sometimes visualisation, relaxation, meditation techniques can be helpful too...

If you want to give emotional freedom technique a try, there are good demos that you can follow on Youtube...

Pixie, please feel free to get in touch if you'd like to know more xxx

My theory about flying is this: the person in charge, the pilot, is the number ONE person interested in arriving safe and sound.
I don't really conquer fears... I just go ahead and do the thing that's scaring me. I'll be fearful inside but not on the outside. So I guess you can say I just ignore them for a while when the going gets tough. Kinda like jumping into a really cold pool. The sooner you jump in the sooner your body will adjust to the temperature and you'll be fine. It's not like it gets any easier to do it the next time though.

Sorry for using a water metaphor sprite....
I do have fears of going down in a plane crash or being eaten by a shark... but it doesn't stop me from flying or going in the ocean. I think a lot of fears are pretty normal unless they are preventing you from doing something that you really want or need to do. My 'fear of heights' would prevent me from going bungee jumping and skydiving, but who cares? I don't think I'm missing out on anything by not having them on my bucket list.

I do have one irrational fear though... it's a fear of moths... don't ask me why, they just creep me out. I also find that they fly at me and when I run screaming from them, they seem to hunt me down. And no, I don't like butterflies either.

i have a friend who reacts the same way with butterflies, so at least you know you're not alone - she just freaks out if they get too near her. personally, i think it's a rational response - most moths are working with terrorist groups these days. you never know which side they are on. for the record, i have the same issues with spiders - i KNOW they are harmless and beneficial, but they freak me out. nothing should have that many eyes staring at you from across the room... smile

Ah geez Doll! It sounds as though I cover several of your fears, babe! Sorry!

Initially, de Havilland concentrated on single and two-seat biplanes, essentially continuing the DH line of aircraft built by Airco, but powered by de Havilland's own Gipsy engines. These included the Gipsy and Tiger Moths. These aircraft set many aviation records, many piloted by de Havilland himself. Amy Johnson flew solo from England to Australia in a Gipsy Moth in 1930.

The De Havilland Gipsy Moth was an absolutely gorgeous, fantastic aeroplane. I took my sceen name after it, not after the insect.

The whole entire process terrifies me! From the needles, to the drills to the little pointy objects that they place in your mouth. I called and made the appointment today, and my hands shook the whole time. Just from a phone call.

Ahh I didn't know that... but yeah... the word "Moth" and "Plane" are scary combinations in my mind.

Reminds me of the movie Snakes on a Plane... for me, Moths on a Plane would have been WAY more terrifying!

But don't worry, I have adjusted to your username. As long as you never change your avatar to a big furry-bodied beast with an alarming wingspan, we should be OK.
