Regarding an upset with England...

I watched a Cup match (CONCACEF?) from 2006 between Spain and USA. USA upset them 2-0, so I have renewed hope they can do an upset now.

The teams are arriving in S. Africa!

I think that was the confederations cup. It's not taken too seriously by most of the teams but it's still a cup and no one wants to lose. That's the one where the US took an early lead against brazil in the final but then blew it.

Yup. I posted a video of that game earlier in this thread for rocco. Maybe he remembers it.

And the no sex rule is an old trick. No idea whether it really helps but coaches lay down the law. In England's case John Terry slept with the wife of another Englishman a while ago which made the cheated on dude quit the national team. So it's kinda understandable but if even one English player breaks the rule their tournament will be ruined.
I say let's send some hot chicas to the hotel where the English team is staying!

I believe the US will surprise the soccer world and at least make is out of their group. Depending who we face then decides if we keep going!

They should. They're in a group with Slovenia and Algeria... Not exactly favorites to win it all.

Algeria will suck yeah but Slovenia might be a surprise. They had a shoot out against Serbia or some other Balkan nation at a previous tournament (WC 1998?). Final score was something like 3-4. Great game.

Well see, I don't know too much about the Slovenia or the Algeria team. I'm cramming to watch all the tv shows about the different teams as I type.

Concerning Algeria: I heard the team captain's physical condition was deemed unfit so the coach is benching him. Now the team captain is considering going home lol.
This kind of internal turmoil always fucks up an entire team.

I only caught like 35 minutes of the second half of the opening game but both goals were in this time frame.
Ancient soccer wisdom: if you don't score then your opponent will. That almost killed Mexico today and they even got lucky at the end when a SA player hit the post.

I'm still hoping France will suck tonight.

Mexico did score in the first half... That ass clown of a ref disallowed it. How can it be offsides if a South African player was on the goal line? One of the worst damn calls ever at any level. So many incorrect offsides calls.

At the end that dumbass ref was in the way of the players too. He was standing in line with the defense. What the fuck...

Haha, you calling conspiracy?
I didn't see any bad referee decisions in the bit I watched.

Maybe not a concpiracy but that call they made was just a joke.

You'll see the replay on your sports news. There was a SA player on the goal line, no hand ball and no fouls yet they inexplicable disallowed the goal.

I doubt this ref team will afficiate another match. I hope not, well not before they learn the offsides rule at least...

Actually, it's an archaic rule but the goal was correctly disallowed. Something similar happened during a game between Italy and the Netherlands at the Euro Cup in 2008.
According to this rule the goalie should be the last man standing so the defender next to the post didn't "count" in this situation.
I can understand people being pissed off about it, definitely not a well-known rule. But yes, it's an official rule and thus the referee make the correct decision.

And holy shit @ France! They managed to suck even more than I expected them to. Uruguay was utter crap too but they don't have so many known players in their team.
But after day 1 in group A anything is possible for these countries. But I'm pretty sure whoever advances to the knock-out phase will be immediately killed off.

Sports fans crack me up.

Yes I boasted about Uruguay while never having actually seen them play a game in the qualifications round lol. I just despise the French team so much.
Both teams fucken sucked. There.

I'm not at liberty to bash Portugal for the time being.

I have had time to dust of the old soccer rulebook and read up on this bullshit rule... I guess its a technically correct call but I'm sure that you can go back and watch all the goals off corner kicks in any big league and you will see the goalie come of his line to try to punch the ball, miss and then some striker poach a quick goal without it being called offside.

Oh well for Mexico. At least the group is still tied at 1 all around. I hope the french and Uruguayans continue their lazy play. But as you said painter I think this group will be canon fodder in the round of 16.

I think that was Painter's heart talking before. France is definitely the villain this cup.

I saw that bad call, too. Both announcers even said it was a bullshit one (minus the "bullshit" term). But when you take the game as a whole, it's like you guys said. Both teams sucked. And all of them advancing will get knocked off. It's too bad, because I expected Mexico to do far better, too.

The cool thing is this is only the first day. Tomorrow is the big England Vs. USA match.

There's a lot more soccer coming!

My Dad bet me $50 bucks on England v USA. He wanted England of course but I refused. He added that he would give me a goal so I took it. I really don't want to hand 50 bucks over. USA better not crap out this game.

I would take that bet, with the goal given. I feel either side will dominate; it won't be a close game. What's your opinion?

I think it will be close game. Maybe 1-0 either way. USA has been playing ok and England hasn't been convincing.

If England gets inspired they'll kick the shit out of the USA. However, if the USA team manages to frustrate the English throughout the game and disallow them from scoring we might get an upset result.
That would be the first of the tournament, which will happen sooner or later anyway.

I didn't have time to watch today's games so far. But from what I heard and saw in the highlights reels was that Greece was horribly anti-soccer again so good thing South Korea whipped their asses. I did see the Argentina goal and then headed back to do more work. When I finished up and went back to watch the game it was still 1-0 so I didn't miss much.

As one Dutch commentator said, we shouldn't expect great games in the group phase. Not until the quarter finals is when teams have had time to grow into the tournament and become a tighter unit on the field.

For tonight's game I'm gonna root for the USA, fuck yeah!

Korea played great! Park came through in a big game again. I threw 10 bucks on them hahaha

And you're right, it's hard to predict the USA v England game. Could be 4-0 England, 1-0 USA, 0-0, 1-1. Neither would surprise me. Should be good no matter what.
