Vote please - enforce member signup to vote / comment or not?

Hi everyone,

After a number of complaints about random comments being left, we went with the flow and have been enforcing signup to our site before people can comment or vote on stories. This has had quite an impact though on the number of comments and votes.

I have always wanted the site open to all to encourage feedback and voting, but perhaps there's a case for keeping the story voting open, but restricting comments to members only, so that an author has a chance to contact the person making the comment if they so desire.

Please can you let me know your views on what you think is the best way forward.

Many thanks,

~ Lush ~
If you want true thoughts, I say no.

Example: I don't like this story, if I post a bad comment you may dislike me.
So, I would tell you the truth as I see it, so you only get good comments.

With no tag, you will get more truth - good and bad comments.

As writers, you need to except the bad with the good, even if you don't knoiw who it is.

And does knowing who it is make a differance? - Why?

I am no a writer, so I can't know how you feel when there is bad comment.
But I do run a business and bad remarks happen. Some I blow off.
Most I deal with. Like you, I want the best product I can.

I do see your point Batman. I just think people ought to have to be registered members to leave comments. But I am also flexible enough that whatever is decided by the vote is okay with me too. I guess I am just not all that concerned about how many votes my work gets...because I write it for my own personal happiness and I share it because I think others may like it...but it is okay if they don't. Lots of different opinions out there.

If you don't like a story then you have several options:

1) Post a comment and risk someone being offended. (hey if people are begging for feedback, they should be grateful for it...either positive or negative)
2) Post a comment and word it carefully so you are critiquing rather than criticizing.
3) Post a private comment in a PM message so you can give your thoughts just to the writer.
4) Don't post anything and move on to another story...no one dies.

In any event, I had a hard time voting really because I can see points to all positions here.

Fuckin’ Fun - nothing but hot sex.

Cookies And Lemonade - a short story about a reporter who gets an unforgettable story when he interviews a 1940s actor.

Boardrooms & Boudoirs Part Nine - Grace invites Mac's sister to stay with them while she recuperates.

I am with Bat, let anyone leave comments and vote. It doesn't matter to me if people leave good or bad comments. I write for the simple pleasure of writing.
You 2 write, I thought you both just looked good for us?

Along with a few others.

Bat
Thanks for the feedback so far. I'll let this run until the end of the week and make a decision then.
While you're sitting there waiting, would you mind un-crossing your legs?

Bat

Any comments? Anyone ?
I think a lot of it has to do with the reader's time. They can do a quick vote for poor, good, average, very good, excellent, all with just one click. If they have more time and want to tell the writer confidentially, they can PM them like Tech said, or leave a comment. No fuss.
bump. let's keep this one top of the pile until it's resolved.

You're a terrible flirt Bat!
Flirt - yes
Terrrible - no.

Full of it - ALWAYS.

But what a place to have fun and open up.

Thanks for the good times.

You sound like you're going some place

Do I have to dig out the running batman gif again?
OK so one negative comment on a story instantly makes people dislike you? I thought we were adults here. I feel whenever I read something that needs a comment that I leave one regardless if it is good or bad. I am a random person sitting on the other end of a computer screen and I will more than likely never meet anyone on the site. Though I wouldn't mind With that said if someone is going to be upset with me over a comment that I felt was warranted then I really don't think I would need to be friends with them anyways.
Ok now I have to ask. What is with the blue fish???

Just a bump to keep the thread on top of this section
I voted for "No - don't enforce signup for either"

Easier it is to comment the more we get.
I voted no. The more comments I get, the easier it is for me to keep improving my writing. I think the anonymous aspect makes it more likely that someone will go to the effort to leave feedback.

I wish more people would leave comments - they mean more to me than the voting does.

Not a chance. You stuck with me.
Now to be stuck to me is a whole new 'ball game'

And Sweet, I have a comment for you, but here is not the place.
Maybe in another post.

Did I help keep it up?
Not you Rocco or Fire - I see you have returned - yippy.

Bat
No probs FD, thanks for reminding me to bring it up again. It was on my to-do list.
"Feedback"

Who else, opps I mean what else is on your 'To Do List' ?

Bat
I have noticed that there are 10 for and 5 against, but most seems to post no sign-up in the comments.

Strange?

Bat
Not strange at all Bat. It is going the exact way I thought it would actually.

I get the feeling that authors prefer to be able to make contact with someone who posts a comment, to either thank them, or just start a dialogue, rather than just have random comments from strangers.

Forcing signup will not stop negative comments, it might reduce them a little.

I'd prefer to have it a free for all, but that does tend to invite some incredibly stupid comments from fly by surfers.

As for the to-do list, there's a new guy started in Marketing I'd......

That reminds me, we need to upload the new smileys.
I've got over 500. Got a file 2 years back.
Just found them. I'll post them as I need and use or not.

And I agree, you writers have a problem with 'fly-by' posters.
It's to bad. There are some good stories and some not.
But that is a mater of opinion to each reader.

Keep writing people. Us non-writers enjoy your work.

Batman.

Well, now you've got me curious. I hope it's not bad!
