Lush V2

Hi All

I am aiming to publish a new version of Lush next Tuesday 25th October 13:00 PST, the site will be unavailable for approximately 24 hours.

The main feature for this release is a new database backend. We are migrating from Microsoft SQL Server to MongoDB, which should give us better performance and stability.

For the initial release, there are a few things missing. Some things to note:

- There will be no members migrated across who have not confirmed their membership details
- No new badges will be issued (a patch will be coming in the weeks following to fix this)
- You cannot change your username (again a patch will be coming that will allow the username to be changed once again)
- Initially you will have no activity on your profile page. As you interact with the site, your activity will accumulate again. This was not able to be migrated away from the old system.

Together with the new database, there have been various cosmetic, functional and bug fixes made. Some notable changes include:

Chat Room

- New log out button to cleanly exit the room
- Ability to paste in youtube videos and have the player appear
- New scramble algorithm for gagging so that some (Sam) cant predict the scrambled text
- Various bug fixes

Settings

- Added timezone to personal details for display local times (forum)
- Group settings and privacy into logical order
- Images can be moved between gallery and albums much more easier

Profile

- New Friends List Lite view (avatars only), enabled from settings page
- Sorting of friends should work now
- Performance improvements to the image gallery

Stories

- Include the one liner in the stories list for the home page
- Stop users from being able to select the story text and also right click on the page (eliminating some of the plagiarizers)

Moderators

- Various goodies.

Thanks everyone. It has been rather an epic release, but its been really enjoyable tinkering with new toys.

There's nothing you need to do. If you are using your account now, then it is confirmed. The unconfirmed accounts are all those ones that people have registered but never activated from the registration email (thousands of them).

Lol, 24 hours is good! Original estimations had it at a couple of days. You could always try your hand at our Spanish site during the outage biggrin

@cupid69 Indeed, there will be no more hanging of the site, at least thats the theory. Of course I havent tested the site under heavy load yet, thats for next Wednesday!

@sammi1985 Yes, profile counts will be carried accross. The only thing that wont be is your historical site activity.

OMFG i had no idea the site had a spanish sister!! thats awesome!!!

just out of curiosity do you and nicola personally know Mara? and gav does that mean you have 2 sites (or more) that you have to constantly keep up with?

First off, I want to say that this is a great site and the hard work that goes on to keep it running and to improve it is greatly appreciated.

One of the proposed changes for V2 will cause me a real problem. I am sure that I am not the only person that does copy and paste the stories - in my case, I create a PDF, which goes onto my eReader. I do not like to sit and read books or stories in front of a computer screen - I spend way too much time there already, at work!

Reading is one of life's pleasures for me and I much prefer to read in my armchair or curled up on the sofa. With an eReader, you can even read them in bed - which is often the most appropriate place to be to read some of the Lush stories ...!! Its a bit hard to that, using a computer, even a laptop!

I totally understand why you are seeking to stop people from being able to copy and paste text from stories, to try to combat the plagarism that seems to be such a problem and I support that aim.

However, I hope that you might be able to come up with some solution, so that I can continue to enjoy the stories here, in the way that I would like to be able to.

this might take a lot of work but it might be possible to have a button you press that downloads a PDF? that way no one could copy and paste the story into a text box on another site yet people like john can still read on their ereaders. Again it's just an idea i know nothing about how much time effort or gigabytes this might take up i just know that i can download the manual to my phone of HTC's website and i can;t copy the text from it as it is a PDF.

another thing you could do john is get a tablet like the kindle fire which has internet access and you would be able to go on lushstories.com from your hand like that. if that is not in the budget worse comes to worse you could always print the stories. i often read out of the printer friendly version because it gets rid of all the ads so i know it exists, although many stories are so long you would need a ream of paper to print.

sorry man, reading on a laptop ain't so bad especially in printer friendly mode

Yes, we both know Mara. Well I have three sites all sharing the same code base as Lush, anyone got any more ideas for new sites biggrin

Will this be for all the stories, or is it up to the authors whether or not they want that option on their stories?
Cause I'd think that it would make it easier for someone trying to steal our work.... Just a thought.

umm.... not that i wasn't before!

Apart from that, thank you once again for all your hard work. Every once in a while something like this comes along reminding all of us that this site is maintained by a very small core of extremely dedicated people who work their asses off in the back ground. The mods, of course, but especially you and Nicola. If i could send flowers or shower you with gifts, i would. This has become, in some ways, my second home, and thank you for how much TLC you put into making it special. and really, 24 hours wasn't bad - i'd heard a rumor that it would be like 3 days! that would have been no fun! smile
