I've been plagiarized!

My story Mystery Cocks was plagiarized onto another web site. Someone named XxcupidxX cut and pasted my story (screwing it up and leaving out part of it) from this site and placed it on COMPETING STORY SITE NAME REMOVED BY MODERATOR under his own name.

I've now realized that Lush Stories isn't protected from cut-and-pasters. Other websites I've been on had a feature making that impossible. I've asked Lush Stories about this. I think this is a great web site, but it would be better if its users were protected more.

What does everyone else think?

I think that if you were really concerned about this cut-n-paste plagiarizing capability, that you would have tried to cut-n-paste someone else's story before you became a member at Lush and determined your own risk of placing your stories on the Lush server, instead of honking on about it after the fact and mentioning a competitor's website name in one of your first community posts.

Or perhaps, failing that bit of forward thinking preventative measure, you might have contacted one of the various site moderators and or tried to reach the website owner/operator to discuss this concern, discreetly.

Blaring this out where you did? Meh...That's what I think.
The same GQP demanding we move on from January 6th, 2021 is still doing audits of the November 3rd, 2020 election.
The competing web site didn't do anything wrong, and I didn't say they did. It was the user who stole my piece. I'm assuming that COMPETING STORY SITE NAME REMOVED BY MODERATOR will deal with that user appropriately.

I don't understand your hostility. I'm just raising an issue that affects everyone who posts stories online. They can be cut-and-paste protected. I'm just suggesting it as an option for this site.

I see no reason to handle this "discreetly" as you put it. Neither web site has done anything wrong. The only wrongdoer is XxcupidxX, who's name is unknown anyway.

Protected HOW from C&P theft?

Believe me, if we suspect that a story has been plagiarised, we investigate and deal with what we find.

At the moment, there is no story link on your profile page. So, where did your story go? Have you deleted it? You joined here the 2nd of this month. Don't you think that maybe it is the other story site that you should be contacting, not complaining in the wrong folder on the Forum at Lush?

Note, this was originally posted in Pimp Your Profile, and I'm moving the thread to the Feedback Folder, where it should have been in the first place.

I think that there are various screen capture programs available for free on the net that can capture any image on a screen and paste it into a document...

Any site that disables cut-and-paste just makes the plagiarizers go through an extra step...and a few more minutes...

There is nothing you can do to fully protect yourself from story theft...other than leaving your stories on your computer hard drive and never posting them...

Take my word on this one...

To the original poster, if you post your story / anything on the web, it can be copied. Go to the site you mentioned, then instead of right clicking the page, go to View Source (depending on your browser). You will see the story in the code.

Almost EVERY site on the web does not bother trying to stop this. Why? As DirtyMartini correctly states, it would take a content thief 2 extra clicks to get the details. You can even get site scrapers which can systematically suck down every page on a website in minutes, regardless of whichever measures you put in place programmatically.

We do actually have it set up on certain areas of your profile pages, to prevent right mouse clicks. I'll ask our programmer if it would be easy to add to the story pages too. An extra hurdle for content thieves to jump over might put some of them off.

If anything, it might cause them to steal from another site which is "less protected"...

I know of a site that recently made it so that unless you are a member, and logged in, you can not view anything other than the front page of the site...I personally think this is a lousy idea...it certainly reduces the number of views a story will get, and what's to stop the thief from joining the site and logging on?

Anyone who in any way shape or form somehow feels that Lush does not do enough for its authors has simply not been to too many other sites...believe me, in the past couple of years I've been doing the writing thing, trust me when I say that I am familiar with a number of different sites...and trust me when I say that Lush is the best...

Anyone who thinks that Lush doesn't do enough for its authors should consider the simple fact that there is a contest going on here...with cash prizes...
Believe me, that is not the norm for erotic story sites...

I know that Nicola is not crazy about me mentioning the fact that I post on several other sites...but, I honestly believe that if more people posted on other sites they would just appreciate Lush more...
The mere fact that everything on Lush actually works puts it way above most other sites...site maintenance is one of those things like sex and oxygen...you notice it missing until you're not getting any...

There is nothing a site itself can do to prevent story theft...there are, however things you may want to consider...like getting your stories copyrighted...

Here is a link I posted over on Stories Space yesterday...

I for one am sorry to hear this, but it does show how easy it to plagiarize a story, no matter what precautions you or a site takes.

I am also sorry you felt the need to remove all your stories, including the one mentioned. It's a shame, because it showed the date that you first published your story and XxcupidxX published his 7 days later. In future, it would be wise to keep as much evidence as you can - even if it means keeping your story on display until it has been sorted out.

I do hope the other site removes your story and the plagiarizer as soon as possible. Please don't let this stop you writing though. Look at this way - someone thought your story was so hot, they had to have it and claim your hotness as their own biggrin.
The next time Gav is in the site code, he will make it so that right clicks will be disabled on story pages.

It will put off the lesser bright content thieves.

This is absolutely true.
-- Anything at all that gets posted on the 'net WILL show up elsewhere. That's just how it is. Those that are not willing to accept this should Not Post on the 'net.

I'm willing to take that risk for the chance to get my stories out to my readers. However, I also have a hoard of rabid fans willing to piranha-attack anyone who dares steal anything from me. smile
