Can you join a contest only at the point that you submit a story?

I see the opportunity to join a contest appears when you start the process of submitting a story. But if the contest isn't appropriate for that story can you submit it and then come back later to join a different contest?

Generally, comps here and on StoriesSpace only accept stories that are original to the comp. You cannot submit a story that is already published on the site to a comp.
