Me, me, me, please! Kimmi needs to be whipped into action too
Do you really have something for this, or are you just pulling our legs - or our whips?

A little bird told me that you require a firm hand, Kimmi.
A firm hand, fingers extended and pressed together almost like a paddle.
A paddle for paddling pretty proffered posteriors that refuse to wriggle their way down onto their hardwood workchairs and get on with their story writing.
So that those botty cheeks know to behave themselves and focus on being dedicated, productive authorly buttocks.
Does that help, Kimmi?

Phew! Managed to read them all. There are two stories I feel guilty about not getting to sooner as my late vote would have meant them getting the qualifying amount.
I know the three I personally would chose as worthy of podium places. It will be interesting to see which the judges decide -- I would be willing to put money on which one is awarded first place.

Congratulations and well done.
I still have four to go, but have my provisional Podium and Top 10.
My opinion rarely coincides with that of the judges (not that it necessarily should) so I won't be placing any bets.

What about giving a score without leaving a comment, particularly if the score is below perfect? Would that constitute an anti-competitive behavior?
Please browse my digital bookshelf. In this collection, you can find 117 full stories, 10 micro-stories, and 2 poems with the following features:
* 30 Editor's Picks, 75 Recommended Reads.
* 16 competition podium places, 11 other times in the top ten.
* 22 collaborations.
* A whole heap of often filthy, tense, hot sex.

Very impessive, I still have about a dozen to go. I understand that it is probably a "good behavior" for a contestant to read all submissions. What about giving a score without leaving a comment, particularly if the score is below perfect? Would that constitute an anti-competitive behavior? So far, I was trying it be consistent, no comment - no score. But since this is my first comptetition, I wonder what others think about it?
Quote by WannabeWordsmith
Scoring is tricky, especially in competitions. If any story receives 'fair' or 'poor' then we're probably not doing our jobs as moderators properly because any sub-standard (technical grammar, or plot) issues should have been returned to the author for rework.

Got to love the Lushland voting system: It's a 1 to 5, but nothing deserves a 1 or 2.
So just Average, Good and Excellent votes please, and not too many 'Average Votes' or you'll end up on the naughty step.

I feel the comp is not the place for critiques. I read and commentated on the comp entries in a spirit of authorly brotherhood and love, and have tried to find something positive to say even when — for me — the story has not hit the mark.

Haha. Too true. A Like button plus comments would be so much better, and more meaningful, given the quality standards we try to uphold. Is "poor" because it's littered with mistakes (unlikely given the modding process) or because you hated what a character did? In which case, why vote at all? Just go read something that appeals. *shrug*

. . . and have had critiques applied to mine, for which I'm truly grateful:
Impressive you made it through all the comp entries. Congrats! I stalled with maybe a dozen to go. Must make time for the others if I can.

I suppose what makes a piece of writing great is more than just technique, knowing the rules. This can all be learned with time, as can learning how to knock out an engaging, presentable story that has all the right bits — I am a case pinpoint, though some might disagree. But I think some writers just have that certain extra spice wired into them from . . . I'll be fucked if I know where from!
Quote by CumGirl
Whilst I might agree with your general statement I think you do your own writing a diservice.
In my humble opinion your story was one of the highlights of the competition (Mr Wordsmith's being another) and I'm looking forward to reading more in future.
Ohhh and by the way, I've finally finished reading all the entries so I might have to have a slice of cake as a reward for good behaviour.
Xxx

After posting above, I remembered something I mentioned to a fellow writer here on Lush a while back
Sometimes on that other writing site that I frequented, I would read wonderful, insightful critiques of my own and other peoples writing. And I would think, Jeez, this person must be an excellent writer. And then I would go to their writing and think, this person can not possibly be the one who offered up all those pithy and astute comments on the craft.
Also, I don't think the best writers always make the best critics. I wondered how this could be. (forgive the preposition — another rule to be broken whenever you can.

Well sir, speaking as a person who has never read a book or written anything longer than a shopping list up until recently. I am in no position to critique anyone’s story writing ability. I only entered this competition so my name could be on the same list as some of the great writers of erotica. It got me noticed by people who would never before have looked at my stuff. So far I have been very lucky; some of my stories have been received quite favourably, despite my obvious lack of ability. Writing is just the most fun. All I’m really saying, albeit in a clumsy way is, if you have a story to tell and people like it, that’s enough. Trying to be someone you’re not may take your charm away. I do hope that didn’t sound too bad.

Quote by LucaByDesignKind sir, I did not for one instance intend to imply that I thought you were in any way pompous. Far from it, I’m sure you are not. Unfortunately, I quite often put things in a clumsy way. It actually requires very little effort on my part to offend someone. I really don’t mean to, it’s a gift I have. Having had an extremely poor education and little social interaction in my life has made me something akin to very annoying. Trust me when I say that I do not mean any offence.
Well, Verity, for someone who has only ever written shopping lists, you're doing pretty well for yourself on the erotic writing front. Just imagine where your writing will be in a couple of years time if you stick at it.
And of course, a vast number of the folk on Lush only uploaded their stories for the sexuality hit of sharing their fantasies — which is the reason I posted my first erotica, over ten years ago now. I left school at sixteen without a qualification to my name, but to make up for that lack, over the last fifty years I've read a hell of a lot of books. My learning has mainly been by osmosis, some How to Write and grammar manuals only when I was getting well into my stide. I only discovered this love of writing very late in life.
And I did not mean to sound pompous earlier. I was addressing people who have — perhaps only through dipping into writing erotica — discovered a genuine love of writing and now want to be the best that they can.

Quote by KimmiBeGoodKimmi, you are so very nice and at the same time so very naughty. My first story (for which you now have no excuse for not reading) was a total of over 15,000 words, split into two parts. That one was easy to write as it was true, about me and how I found Lush. Having said that, it was rejected several times for being of pretty low quality with regards to spelling, formatting and almost complete lack of correct punctuation. Thankfully tams_back_yay took pity on me and went the extra mile to correct it. After that, people were asking me for more, something I never had so started to make stuff up. Since then, the ever lovely twisted_skald (Mischelle) has very kindly taken me under her wing and invited me to join her novice writers club. Since I’ve been on lush I have received nothing but kindness. I count myself so very lucky to have been accepted by you and many others. I’ve even been gifted bronze, silver and gold membership. I owe it to those lovely people to do my best and continue writing. So basically, thank you and all of the wonderful people of Lush for giving me this opportunity. PS, I was only joking about reading my first story, it does ramble on a bit but if you ever have a problem sleeping it may be worth a try. Oh yes, I almost forgot to say, I got myself a bit squiffy today and dropped the “F” word into one of my stories. Oh dear, kindest regards, Verity
You are smart, Verity, to start with smaller stories to get your feet wet. I help some newbies who get rejected and they have started with 9000 word stories. If you haven't written a lot, it's so much easier to start and experiment in flash or microfiction. Learn the basics then increase story length. You are a very good storyteller and I enjoy your writing.
Also ... just my wish pointed at Lush Comp Creators ... I would love another comp where we are shown a picture and told to write a story around it. It really forces one to create something totally new, but also captures a part of each author's unique perspectives too.
