If Lush would just limit the number of times a person could win and place in a comp to perhaps once in a six month period, then the competitions actually would draw newer writers and even some of us who have quit entering for the most part. Then you could still enter and people could enjoy your writing, which in my opinion (and that of many others) has become quite good (and a far cry from your earliest poems... ).

If you want to improve your writing, you need to go up against the best. You need to learn how and why a story was better. Then you need to work on your own skills.

That goes for all aspects in life.

Why create a false reality / competitive environment where only those who've not won competitions or have developed their writing chops to very high standard, aren't allowed to enter?

I would love for all our best writers to enter every competition. But these kind of threads have made some shun our competitions now, which makes me really sad.

Literature will ultimately be the loser if our best writers are restricted from entering competitions. And I won't stand for that.

You WILL gain readers by entering comps.

You WILL become a better writer by entering comps.

YOU WILL receive some support from other authors.

Go into it for that. If you get in Top Ten, "Woohoo!" ... if not, you can be sure you got more reads, votes, comments than if you submitted your story outside comp.

I look forward to reading everyone's entry. I am exhausted of late, so just writing what comes easy to me, which isn't a comp story right now. I will be a reader and probably hit next one.

Have fun and may the biggest Fool win!

I know, right? Taking the Mickey out of sprite? That's dangerous stuff…and I know she'll make me pay, somehow.

But I like dancing on the lips of…volcanoes!

Not that. Your 7 messages to me over 2 days on the subject were both disconcerting and tiresome.

Maybe take a break from being online if you need to?

Friendly advice.

you don't like the comps, don't enter.

This

Or you can enter because you like writing stuff and you have an idea that fits the category and maybe you can produce something you are proud of as an author.

And maybe other people will like it or maybe they won't.

Comme ci, come ca

Anybody entering to win, to get on a podium, or to be selected amongst the additional recommendations is starting with the wrong motivation.

As a mere reader, I absolutely love the competitions.
I get to know new authors (to me, at least) every time, and it's also great to see the ones I do know or even follow outside their usual grounds.

I always thought it was an enjoyable and enriching experience for everyone, I'm sorry to learn that it's not, I truly wish it was.
Here's hoping they continue.

Based on your story comments and amazing Ms Curious created expressions, you should write. Seriously! Your intelligence and creativity are obvious to all. Ever thought about it?

I never said they should not be allowed to enter, just limit how often they can win, say, the top 3 spots. I know a lot of writers who quit entering or rarely enter comps anymore because of the fact that the same people seem to win quite often. I have also had new writers say the same thing to me. I know there are many writers here far better than I am. I also have read many of the winning stories and objectively feel that some of mine have been just as good. I really don't think restricting how many times a person can win a contest is unfair. Many places that have contests limit that.

I have been here for 10 years and have been an author for most of that time. The vast majority of my stories are not returned for technicalities of spelling or grammar. I am nearing 1.5 million views on my stories and have over 400 story followers, very few of whom are friends, so my stories must appeal to some people. But if all you get is the best writers in each comp, then you are unfairly eliminating every potential excellent writer out there who is discouraged form entering by seeing the same handful of names winning every time. If you want to encourage new writers, then they need a fair shot at winning. But you won't get it both ways as it stands right now.

One other thing... the very fact that there are "these kinds of threads" proves my point. I am not the only person that feels this way.

The pool of top tier talent is just too deep for a timed prohibition to change anything without making it something ridiculous like a year — and it's basically punishing success.

Everyone has to decide for themselves whether entering competitions is a positive for them, and act accordingly. The system in place is far more focused on the quality of the writing and sticking to the theme than the standard high score only model in use on similar sites.

Just an FYI, please don’t submit poetry into this competition, it is not eligible. We are looking for carefully crafted prose with an interesting plot that fits the theme. Your work should be polished before submission as competition entries with poor grammar or formatting issues will be returned.
There’s lots of time before the closing date, so get creative and have fun. Good luck smile

To insinuate that any writer, whether seasoned or new, doesn't get a 'fair shot' is insulting AF and quite frankly ridiculous.

What, you think there's some great Lush conspiracy to throw the results of competitions, given that the pool of judges will change constantly depending on who enters what competition?

If you'd won the last 5 would you still think it was rigged?

It's almost impossible for an author to objective about their own work (perhaps returning to a piece after a few years). But I like to think that I know good writing when I see it in others.

I've yet to read a comp podium placement that I thought wasn't deserved

I see no reason to entertain any further griping about the perceived equality of this site's story competition practices.

The bottom line is that Lush believes in a fair and even chance for all authors and conducts the competitions in the fairest and most honorable way possible. The site has even gone to the trouble of detailing the exact methodology used for those that are curious.

If you would like to offer your thoughts on how to improve these competitions then by all means send a message using the contact form and share with Lush your ideas:

https://www.lushstories.com/contact-us.aspx

If I were a new member to Lush and considering entering a story competition here, reading through some of this thread would put me off. That is unacceptable.

From this point on, let's please keep this thread to story ideas, questions about the theme, pimping your entry, etc.

Thank you.

I only had my first story published in February. It was the first time I’d ever written anything longer than a shopping list. I was delighted to see it published. I only ever meant to write two but so far have had nine published, including one in this competition. I’ve only done this because of the help and encouragement from the moderators and the people who take the time to read and leave comments on my stories. And now, a matter of weeks later, I’m in the same competition as some of the great writers on Lush. What’s not to like about that. Plus, I’ve learned what a comma is for, well almost. Regards, Verity

Verity, you are waaaaay ahead of the game. I have written over 180 stories in my 3 years here and just recently learned how to wrangle in my commas ... thanks to a quick lesson from the brilliant Jaymal. Best wishes on your entry!

Unsure if I'm entering since writing a comp story is so time consuming. Started editing chapter 1 of a series I wrote as is.

I'd advise anyone to enter for the same reasons mentioned before. My most voted on stories are Comp stories. The challenge to write within a specific theme is thrilling. Seeing what others wrote is also great.

Son of a bitch, I think I talked myself more into possibly entering after writing all of that ?.

It's time for me to express how I feel, I suppose. I will be entering this "foolish" contest. It is what I do. So far I have entered the Lush contests 37 times. This will make number 38. Writing is one thing I like to do and Lush gives me the chance to do that. I also hope to please my readers.

Up to now, I have not created work that has won in the contests. I have been pleased that I've placed in the top 10 over a third of the times that I've entered. My best entry got me to 4th place and gave me my only EP.

Anyway, as long as I have the skills necessary to enter the contests here I will be doing so. It is one of the perks I love most about my writing home.

Best of luck to all who enter.

Competitions are … competitive. You can’t go in expecting to win. Of the 14 entries right now in the current competition, one of the stories in particular stands out for me as a potential winner. Although I entered first, it ain’t mine.

Many writers here could be professional authors, if they aren’t already. That’s your competition (people with proven talent that have put in years of work), along with the nearly 540,000 members in general on this site (not all writers, obviously, but still).

If you just want to write stories without official recognition, that’s an equally valid way to use the Lush® platform. Nobody’s going to judge you.

But judgement is par for the course in contests. If you want to win, place, show, or make the top ten, you’ve got your work cut out for you.

Here’s some help for those who need and/or want it.

I can't agree more with this Kimmi...

Here's my "foolish" submission on this topic:
I entered the masturbation contest last year and ended up writing a story that I loved, and I would have never pushed myself to write... too bad the mod rejected it because I hadn't read the details and was double the specified word limit
I submitted it as a regular story instead and it was my first RR and remains one of my favorite stories I've ever written. It also started a 6 month flood of writing all kinds of things that I never expected and started a fairly cool journey on Lush.

You gotta put yourself out there to push yourself sometimes (and you need to read the rules, lol)

I love your writing, LL!

The comps are what got me thinking about the Omnium Badge. Else I would have written only Spanking, BDSM stories. Writing to different themes broadens your imagination for sure. We all want to win, but, I try to remind myself why I started writing here in the first place.

Very unique takes on this theme so far ...

I don't think there is a conspiracy to "throw" competitions and frankly it is insulting for you to imply that is what I am saying. And it is also not even the correct terminology. A participant in a contest is the one who "throws" the contest by cheating in some way. I believe what you meant to say is that the contests are fixed. While I do not believe they are fixed, I do believe there is some favoritism shown to certain authors that may not even be intentional, but in fact exists.

And, if I had won 5 contests in a row, I would actually refrain from entering the next few contests to give someone else a chance to win, not because I thought it was rigged, but because I really would feel the judging somehow favored me, especially if I knew which mods were doing the judging. In fact, I would likely do that after winning 3 contests in a row.

Quote by Jen
Couldn't agree more. Most feedback from comps is good because people are glad they're not run as a popularity contest. But it can be difficult for people to accept results when they've received so many votes and nice comments.

I've never won a competition. Never made top 3. And when I read the stories that did win I can appreciate why they won. They were better than mine, plain and simple. I think people need to try and have a slightly more critical eye where their own work is concerned.

I am quite critical of my writing, and spend a lot of time re-reading, adding and deleting things, checking it for grammar and spelling, verifying the timelines and that the details are consistent. And as I said elsewhere, I have read winning stories that are very good, and some that are no better or even worse than mine.

I would be quite interested in seeing that methodology. Also the methodology for selecting EP's, RR"s and overall top author status. (And, BTW... if I were a new member to lush and considering entering a story competition, just looking at the list of the comps and the top 3 winners would be enough to put me off. I would not need to read through some forum thread.)

And if I wrote all new material utilising a character from my entry?

For example: 'The Further Adventures of The Gooseberry Fool, My Sexual Escapades at a Landfill Site'

How about that?
