as long as it's a stand-alone story, totally within the rules. smile

I'm probably being a bit dumb, so you can use characters or a format you've developed in a series just as long as the story itself works as a standalone entity?

Have I got that right? If not, I've got a 5000 word story going free to a good home.

it should be fine as long as you don't attach a series tag to the story. if you'd like, once the comp is over, you can go back and add it at a later date.

That is great information. Thank you, Rachel.

Well, it looks like I’m first on the board.

I hope this competition doesn’t dissuade too many people. Last time, we had a lot more entries five days in {25 → February 3-7, 2021}.

Maybe people are confused by the word count. Just know that 5,000 is the maximum. My entry came in at 2,048 words, nearly 3,000 less than I could have used (but didn't need).

I want to see many more writers’ takes on this topic.

Finally, a second entry.

I hope this gets the ball rolling for others.

I've written about two hundred words so far. For the Debauched competition, I was just barely under the maximum. I suspect that if I actually finish this one, the total word count is going to be far less - maybe a thousand? For these contests, one has to get it done fairly quickly and then hope for the best.

i'll be sitting this one out.

If Lush would just limit the number of times a person could win and place in a comp to perhaps once in a six month period, then the competitions actually would draw newer writers and even some of us who have quit entering for the most part. Then you could still enter and people could enjoy your writing, which in my opinion (and that of many others) has become quite good (and a far cry from your earliest poems... ).

I've done my 5,000 words. Just need to do a grammar edit. Then fingers crossed and Moderators approving they'll be another entry.

Dear moderators, I already have a story awaiting approval. Am I allowed to enter the competition whilst it’s still pending? Thank you, regards, Verity.

There's a bit of a difference between writing a 100 to 200 word poem and a 5000 word story with plot, character development, narrative arc etc. I think you'll find the stories will roll in. It's a long way to the 7th May deadline.

2 competition winning stories, 1 Famous story, a smattering of Editor's Picks, a handful of Recommended Reads and one Clitorides award are scattered amongst my stories.

One of a handful of writers to get the Omnium badge for writing in every category

True that.

We got eighty-five submissions for the [url=https://www.lushstories.com/competitions/valentine-poetry.aspx]Valentine Poem Contest
. I’m not expecting that many this time around.

However, I thought we’d have more than four entries by this point.

we would prefer you wait to send in your comp entry after the one pending is published, thanks. smile we tend to push comp entires through faster to make sure everyone has a fair shot at it, so there shouldn't be any issue with the deadline.

One thing about it, the constraints of a strict word count certainly muscles up the prose.

Wasn't Debauched quite a bit tighter - I don't remember the limit. 3,500 I think?

I know. It's just me. I had this problem with the Horroween comp of 2019. I just could not condense it to fit the bill. It was another year of picking at it before the three parts had morphed into something ready for readers. Even now its not concluded. https://www.lushstories.com/stories/horror/-the-call-of-the-deep-.aspx. And it would certainly have garnered far more than the 2K reads reads that it has picked up over the since posting it.

But I'm totally enjoying writing for this comp, even though I'm having to shoehorn a story that I had already simmering to fit the remit, and even though I'm worried the judges might think it not "Foolish" enough.

But hey-ho, the competitions are time for gathering new readers — always a joy in its self.

I just read part one to your horror, and I'm happy you didn't bother with forcing it into the word count confines of the competition. Some stories just need more words to tell the tale, and you paint such vivid imagery with the setting and the surreal. So good. smile

Also feeling the word count squeeze. I'm at around 1500 words which means it better be one-third of the way done... time for me to pick up the pace lol. Looking forward to yours too, and everyone else's, whether it ends up being an entry or its own story.

cumgirl’s submitted an entry of vibrant vacuous verbosity.

My meager effort to replicate her style here in this comment doesn’t do it justice.

Check it out.

'Vacuous'. Now that is a word I can certainly agree with.

Vehemently virtuous, whilst vigorously vacuous with nary a hint of voluptuousness.

Though plentiful perky, pokies.

Thank you, very much for the kind recommendation.

this just in. Mike Phelps only allowed to swim in every other olympics. thing is, it would be pretty awesome to beat Phelps in a race. that's what people should go for. if we dumb down the field, all we're doing is saying 'well, the rest of you guys aren't very good, so we'll make it easier for you.'

personally, i want to win by beating the best. i don't want to win because the best aren't allowed to enter. that's just me. i mean maybe we should just pick 3 random winners from everyone who enters from now on?

frankly, i am sick of the complaints. we run the comps as fairly as we can, we do them as talent contests and not popularity contests, we hand out pretty nice prizes, and we put a lot of work into them. at this point i'm on the verge of suggesting dropping them, since they seem to cause everyone such angst.

yes, i know a lot of people have complaints. i get to see most of them or at least hear about them. to all of you? knock it off. it's tiresome. you don't like the comps, don't enter. some of the other sites base them solely on voting, which means the winners will always be well established writers. here, there is room for people new to the comps, new to the site, to win. it's happened more than once. it will happen again. why? because they write a story that knocks it out of the ballpark.

(i'd like to point out that i did this without swearing once. pretty impressive, right?) smile

Thank you, Violet. That is so sweet of you to read and comment.

I finished my comp entry this morning. By finished, I mean I've got to the end. Now it's another week of going over it — and no doubt undoing a lot of what I had settled on. I have five words that need to be culled to get it under the required word count.

When Its up, I will read some of the other entries.

Well, I’ve managed to get my entry in. Albert Gets His Wish?. As it is most probably the best comedy story ever written, I think everyone else should pull out and just hand me the cash.

Okay, I may have overshot a little there, but one has to try.
