Is a '4' considered a "down vote"? I didn't give any, but I know some that do, not to be malicious, but just judging a story as 'not their favorite.'

I didn't think the entries were based on highest votes and am glad they aren't. I would think read count would be the more accurate evidence of a great read. I typically don't spam mine because I want to see where the chips naturally fall. Its still hard to gauge my writing though because many comment because I comment on theirs or they are my friend, etc.

You can't please everyone in a comp because everyone wants to win. And many of us will get comments saying, "You are the best!" which get your hopes up and then lead to disappointment when judges don't agree. I sat this one out to get back in the right mindset. Some know, I had an un-kimmi-like reaction to recent StoriesSpace comp. I don't ever want to do that again. I let myself expect an outcome, then felt ashamed, even embarrassed, when it didn't happen, deleted all my stories as a crazy, reactive response. Do NOT be that Kimmi!!!

Best to remember there are always more NOT in Top Ten than in there. And with high level of writing here, many brilliant entries will NOT make Top Ten. You aren't alone. Many gets tons of votes. Many have commenters project them to win. Try to view it as a way to attract readers and other authors to your work.

I consider it a down vote of sorts
I either give 5's or skip voting or sometimes I read so fast I miss voting also

Claro que sí! (Plus a cup and a scented soap. Not allergic to cats, are you?)

I find the voting very hard.. I usually don't vote or comment if I don't like a story. Sometimes I will give a 4 if the story doesn't engage me as much as I thought it would.
The whole votes/views is so skewed.
A click on it and reading the first 2 lines counts as a view as much as reading 3 or 4,000 words.
Those with large fan bases will get a lot more votes.

I'm quite happy with the whole secret voting with a bunch of judges that no one knows who they are.. it seems the most logical... even if it is a lot of work shortlisting and voting.
