da Bear’s Unofficial Guide to Using Lush 2.0

NB: This is an unsanctioned attempt to provide an Instruction Manual / FAQ.

*******   Please do not post on this thread.    *******

Please use the Tips thread to post questions, tips, or suggestions.

This site is intended to provide an easy way to find information about Lush 2.0, and to serve as an ad hoc instruction manual / FAQ

Note that I am not a moderator, I have no authority or official position in Lush. All I'm trying to do is to be helpful, so please don’t bitch at me.

I would like to keep this all about instructions, and not the usual give-and-take of a thread, so I would appreciate it VERY much if you would PM me rather than post a comment or a question here.

If you see any mistakes, let me know.
If you have any complaints, I’d be glad to hear about them. Write them on a $100 bill, one complaint per bank note, and post them to me.
If you feel this is a worthwhile effort, I’d appreciate it if you would PM let me know as it has taken a number of hours when I could have been contemplating Sex and the Single Bear (although I’m actually happily married…), and happily writing smut instead.

And if you don’t know how to send a PM, check the FAQs below!

Thanks! And be sure to drop in for a drink and a chat at Rumplations Honky Tonk and Cyber Bar! It's the social center of Lush in any version!

Below is a list of the questions I have either found answers for, or am working on.

I have not been able to fully flesh out this FAQ, so if you don’t find the answer to the question posted, that’s why.

If you know the answer to a question posted here that is missing an answer, please PM it to me. I will give you credit for the answer if you wish.

If there is a question I don't have listed here, please PM it to me.

Please do not post questions, comments, or answers here! I'm trying to keep this thread purely for this FAQ! Thank you.

How to Use This Instruction Manual / FAQ   –  Search Code DB1

I’m trying to do this using a Forum thread, which is an imperfect medium for an imperfect Bear. Here’s the best I could work out.

The post above gives the questions I’ve tried to answer, along with a clickable link where I have answers. If I haven't yet got an answer, or haven't had time to post it, then there will be no link. Sorry!

However, any link will only take you to the correct page, so to help you find the specific answer, I’ve added a Search Code.
Copy the Search Code from the Table of Contents question, and when you get to the page, use your browser’s Search function with the Search Code. That should take you to the actual answer.

And again – please DO NOT post questions, comments, or better answers on this thread. Instead, PM me, and I’ll do my best to deal with whatever your issue is.
Thanks!

Why Did We Have to Change to Lush 2.0 from Lush 1.0?   –  Search Code: DB2

“The old version of Lush was built up and tweaked over 15 years. We've only had a few months to try and write this new site so of course it's not going to look the same, but it will keep being developed and added to and a lot of that will be based on user feedback.

“I really hope people who loved the old version will stick around and feed their ideas into the new version, but I need to stress that it won't happen overnight and it won't look exactly the same. They two platforms are written in completely different coding languages (this is where I struggle cos I'm not an IT person lol). Unfortunately, the old site wasn't sustainable. I'm sure most folk remember the outages we had and how frustrating it was when it went offline.

"We're just asking for a little patience for now while we try to get the critical site issues ironed out and then we can look at building and customising the user experience. Thanks ❤
 – Jen

I’d like to add a note to Jen’s comments.

As someone who in his misspent youth used to write software, I can tell you that when the person(s) who designed Lush 1.0 left, it was only a matter of time before Lush 1.0 collapsed. Brilliant software designers are typically too busy writing or maintaining software to document it, and trying to unravel someone else’s software is perhaps the world’s most thankless…and pointless…job.

So, Lush had, IMHO, no choice but to look for another way of supporting this website and our smutty habits. Why they chose this particular html code is above my pay grade, but any off-the-shelf software package is only going to suit about 80% of previous software users.

However, Lush 2.0 is being adapted and customized to our specific needs, so I would expect it to get more and more homey as time goes on. It won’t be as good as the “good old days” – but then, the good old days never were as good as we remember them.

But software updating and customizing takes time, folks, so PLEASE be patient. At least a little bit.

To paraphrase St. Augustine, “God grant me patience…and hurry!” (What he actually said is highly appropriate to Lush: “Give me chastity and continence, but not yet.”

How to Change Your Avatar Photo  –  Search Code DB3

Click on the avatar photo blank supplied by the website, at the top RH corner of the Red Menu, the one in the little circle at the extreme Right Hand Side (RHS).

Select "My Profile" from the drop-down menu.

You will see your present avatar photo or image in the square box on the LHS, just under the pretty cover image on at the top of the profile page. Click on that square box.

That will take you to a pop-up menu that says "Update Profile Picture". Here, you can either select an image/photo from your own media ("photos") or from some external source ("upload") where you go to the image you want stored on your computer/tablet/phone/device, then click on it.

Once you've selected the image you want to use, click on it, and that will become your avatar image.

Changing the background picture at the top of my profile  –  Search Code DB4

Click on you avatar photo at the top RH corner of the Red Menu, the one in the little circle at the extreme Right Hand Side (RHS).
Select "My Profile" from the drop-down menu.

Make sure that the box within that Cover Image on your profile (that pretty picture at the top of your profile, right under the Red Menu) can be edited. You should see a box just above your avatar photo that says "Edit Cover Image". If it's not there, then go the the box at the top RHS of the cover image that says "Enable Edit Mode" and click it. It should change to "Disable Edit Mode" and the "Edit Cover Image" box should appear.

Click on "Edit Cover Image". You now have four choices as a place to source your Cover Image: pre-stored images provided by the website; an image from your private collection stored in the "cover image album" from your "My Media" collection; an image from your public "photo" album in your "My Media" collection; or an image stored somewhere on your device, which you can either select, or drag to the indicated box.

Note that because of the long, narrow shape of the Cover Image, the best pixel dimensions are 1500 pixels by 500 pixels.

How do you enter your location? –  Search Code DB5

Under your avatar photo in the Red Menu, select “Settings”
Click on “Account” if you are not already there. It is on the LHS under “Account Settings”
Scroll down to “Location”
Enter your location
Many people, who wish anonymity and do not want to enter their actual location, enter a phony location, such as “Vanuatu” or “Timbuktu”. I’m not suggesting that you do that, I’m just reporting.

How do you find and change the available privacy settings?  – Search Code DB6

Click on your avatar menu at the top RHS in the Red Menu.

In the drop-down menu, select "Settings".

Once you're there, select "Privacy", the second choice from the left under "Privacy Settings" in the centre of the page.

This is also how you can BLOCK someone.

How do I post my status and/or see the status of my friends and comment? – Search Code DB7

To post your own status:
1) Go to your profile page.
2) Below the Cover Image at the top, there are several buttons. Click on the one that says "Statuses" (sic).
3) A window will open up that says "Post a status…", with a text entry box.
4) You may also select one of a small range of moods, or add an image from your personal media.
5) When you've done entering text, images, and moods, click the button below marked "Post to Friends and Followers"

To check on a friend's status, and to post on their wall:
1) Got to their profile page
2) Below their Cover Image at the top, you will see a line of buttons, including "Statuses" (sic). Click on that
3) This will open up another range of buttons, the left-most of which is "Notes". Click on that choice.
4) That will open a text box. Enter your note there, then click "Submit".

How do you change your Forum signature? –  Search Code DB8

I believe that only Gold and Platinum members can change their Forum signature – but I could be wrong.

On the Red Menu at the top of the page, click on "Forum".

That will take you to a page titled "Sex Stories Forum".

Immediately below that are four choices, starting with "New Posts". Click on the right-most one, "More" with a downward pointing carrot (also called a 'caron').

That will give you a drop-down menu. Select the bottom choice, "Forum Settings".

Under Forum Settings, you will find two boxes, one marked "Rank" (I, for example, currently have "da Bear" as my rank, but you can put anything), then a box for text. In that second, larger box, you can put your Forum signature, which can include links to some of your stories.

Just remember that having a too-long or too-detailed signature can be annoying to everyone else reading your Forum posts.

BTW, you can also turn off everyone else's Forum Signatures! Below the text box just described, you will see a toggle switch that says "Hide Signatures". The default setting is off (which means you will see the signatures). If you do not want to see them, toggle this ON.

When you are done with your Signature, click "SAVE".

How do you avoid getting “Seeking” messages from other people, especially non-Lush people?

Do I have to fill out that profile information about who I’m Seeking?  –  Search Code DB11

Go to your Profile Page.

Scroll down to "Seeking", which is a separate section.

If you are not seeking anyone (or any thing), just leave unchecked all of the choices, such as "Straight male", or "Straight female", then click the "Save" button below.

A line of text will appear below the "Seeking" label, which will say "Not Currently Seeking", and you shouldn't receive any messages about matches (because there won't be any).

If you are seeking someone, then click the appropriate button(s) in this section, as well as the other criteria, such as age range, and distance from your location.

How do I ask someone to be my friend?  –  Search Code DB9

Go to their profile page.

Just to the right of your avatar photo, you will find a letter icon with "Message", and a "+" icon with "Friend". Click on the "+ Friend" icon and it will send a friend request to that person.

Unfortunately, at the moment, there is no facility for sending a message with that request. All they get is you avatar photo, as well as two buttons for "Accept" and "Deny".

But you could always send them a message just before or just after asking to be their friend.

An incredibly talented, but modest Polar Bear, often mischievous, but never malicious!

How do I find someone's profile page? –  Search Code DB10

Go to the top of any page. Find the magnifying glass in the Red Menu at the top of the page and click on it.

This takes you to a page called "Profile Search".

If you know the name of the person you are looking for, scroll down a fair ways until you get to "Advanced". Click on that.

Type the name of that person, such as JamesLlewellyn for me, then either hit Return, or click the "Go" button at the right.

Note that the search function is currently case sensitive, so if you search for JamesLlewellyn, you'll find me, but if you search for jamesllewellyn, you won't. This is a known bug and will hopefully be amended soon.

If you're unsure of a person's full username, you can also try just typing James or james and it will display all results starting with those letters.

How do I post something on a friend’s wall or profile?   –  Search Code DB12

Got to their profile page

Scroll down until you get to "Comments". There you'll see a text-entry box. It also has icons for emojis and a camera for images. You can type your message into the text box, select an emoji from one of the ones offered, and add an image.

The images you can add must either come from your own "My Media", which means you uploaded it to your media earlier, or you must provide the URL (Internet address) of the image (or YouTube video) you want to post. Those are the only two ways of posting images that I know of.

What do the little green speech balloons in my friend’s avatar photo on their profile page mean?
– Search Code DB13

A green circle means they are online now (or at least signed in).

One balloon means they are in a chat room and if you click on it you will join them there.

Two balloons, if clicked on, will open an IM (Messenger) to them. It should open a Messenger window so you can contact them via Messenger, and, if they are willing, chat with them.

An incredibly talented, but modest Polar Bear, often mischievous, but never malicious!

How do I open a Chat window with a friend?  –  Search Code DB14

"Chat" or Instant Messaging (IM) in Lush 2.0 is called "Messenger". You should be able to see it on your current screen at the bottom left corner. It will either be a small, grey rectangle with the word "Messenger" in white, or a small, red rectangle with the word "Messenger" in white.

Either way, click on it, and it should pop up into a red menu that shows the avatar photos of any of your friends who are, theoretically, online. I say "theoretically" because some sloppy people – like me – tend not to sign out. As long as you are signed in, your avatar may appear in the Messenger pop-up. If you have been active in the recent past, your avatar photo will have a green circle in it.

If you click on one of round avatar photos in the Messenger pop-up, another red rectangle for that friend will appear to the left of the "Messenger" red rectangle. It will say something like "JamesLlewellyn" (assuming that JamesLlewellyn HAD any friends who wanted to chat with him).

If a friend has recently sent you an IM, their avatar will have an envelope icon in it. This can be useful if you have been chatting with a number of friends, and all of their pop-up windows are lined up along the bottom of your screen. Sometimes a new message will be indicated by a line saying "New Message" – and sometimes it won't. "Get used to disappointment," as the Man in Black said to Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride.

If you click on that red rectangle for a friend, it will pop up. At the bottom of that pop-up you should find a text-entry line where you can type one line of text. It probably has a length limit (although I'm not sure), but you can only see that part of your message that is on the right-hand side of that one line. You can go backwards using left and right arrows (if your device has such), and you can delete the line if you think better of what you were going to say by double-clicking, then hitting delete. Or you can send that line of text as an IM by hitting return.

Unfortunately, this IM system is a little bit squirrely. Depending on what kind of window you are in (Forum, Story, Message, etc.) the red rectangle may actually be burgundy in colour, and only allow you to type a message to that friend if the system believes they are online. And unfortunately again, if someone is signed on, but has not been active for a while, then the text entry line may be closed – i.e., won't allow you to enter text.

And unfortunately again, sometimes the system can't make up its mind whether a friend is online or not, and they flicker in and out of existence in the "Messenger" window, and the text entry line on their pop-up opens and closes. This is quite annoying if you are actually involved in an online chat with someone and the system decides they are not, really there as the text entry line will open and close erratically.

If some of these issues get corrected, I'll try to remember to update this.

An incredibly talented, but modest Polar Bear, often mischievous, but never malicious!

How do you post images?

In the Forum post you are preparing, click on the camera icon at the top of the screen.

This will open a pop-up menu with three choices:

"Yours" – which will allow you to select and upload an image from your personal Media library.

"External" – which will ask you for the ULR (Internet address) of the image you wish to post (and will allow you to post YouTube videos).   AND

"Upload" – which will allow you to either "Drag and drop your files anywhere" or ""Upload a file". If you do either of those things, you should see a thumbnail of the image you wish to upload. You may repeat this process several times until you have selected the images you want to upload. (To be honest, there may be a limit to the number of images you upload, and it may be partially restricted by what type of membership you have, but I don't know what those limits are. Experiment!).
When you have selected all the images you wish to upload, click the red "Add" button at the bottom RHS of the window. The image(s) you have selected will be uploaded to the post text entry

That should do it.

BTW, you can neither edit nor get rid of images once you've posted them. All you can do is delete the entire post. Not optimal.

One other thing is that images are sometimes posted as thumbnails rather than full-size.

If you post an image from "Your Media" to a friend's wall, for instance, it only leaves a 1" square thumbnail visible. If that thumbnail is clicked, it will open to a much bigger size and full resolution, but if the friend doesn't know to do that, they may complain that the image you posted is too small. Several have asked me to post bigger images, not realizing that. Also, if posting in a forum, the same image will be rendered, but greatly reduced in size.  (Thanks to Kistinspencil for this addition.)

An incredibly talented, but modest Polar Bear, often mischievous, but never malicious!

How do I post an image on a friend's wall? –  Search Code DB16

Go to their profile page.

Scroll down until you get to the "Comments" section. There you'll find a text box marked "Write a comment." You have to enter some text, even if it is only a single space (i.e., hit the space bar once).

At the bottom RHS of the text entry box, you will see two icons, one for emojis, and the other a camera. Click on the camera.

You will have two choices then. You can either upload an image from "Yours", meaning the images you have uploaded into your personal library. Or, in theory, you can choose "External", in which case you can either provide the URL (Internet address) of an image, or the URL of a YouTube video (not, apparently, the Embed code). However, I've tried the "External" choices, and cannot make them work, so good luck with that!

If you do manage to post an image successfully, it will be a 1"x1" thumbnail, not a full-sized image. However, if your friend (or someone else) clicks on that thumbnail, a much larger, higher resolution image will fill the screen.

How do you initiate a Forum thread? –  Search Code DB17

In the Red Menu at the top of your screen, click on "Forum" in the middle, between "Stories" and "Groups".

Once you're in the Forum, you will see that it is divided into a series of major topic areas. For instance, the first one is "Writing Resources ". To open a thread, it has to be within one of these major topic areas.

For simplicity in this example, click on "Writing Resources".

A new screen will come up. At the top of this screen there is a big red button that says "Create A New Topic". Click on that to create a new thread.

A second new screen will appear with the title "New Topic" and a two-part text box.

The top part says "Topic Name". Click in here to place your cursor in that part of the window, and type the title of the thread you want to create. For example, you might type "How to write a best selling novel in 80,000 easy steps" as the title. Note that this would fit within the broader topic of "Writing Resources", whereas "How to make yourself attractive to another sex" would not.

The second, lower part of the box is the standard text entry box that someone will use to post on any thread. Here, though, you will be creating the first post of this thread, so it would be a good idea to explain the purpose of this thread, and perhaps why you created it.

I'll explain what the various symbols mean in anther part of this section, under the title "How do you post something in an existing Forum thread?"

Below the two-part text box you've just completed, there are two buttons. On the bottom right is a button that says "+ Add Poll." If you click on this button, another two-part text box will appear, plus a drop-down menu, and another button. The top of the new two-part text box will say "Poll Question". Enter something like "What do you think is the best colour for a book cover?" In the second part, list the answers to the question you want to allow, such as "Blue" or "Red". Below that, click on the drop-down menu to select when the poll will expire, with choices running from 1 day to never. Select the length of time you want.

Below that drop-down menu is a button that says "Remove Poll". If you've changed your mind about having the poll in this thread, click that.

Once you've entered everything that is relevant, as outlined above, for this new thread, click on the red box at the bottom right that says "Submit". That should do it.

Note that if you enter something off-topic, the moderators may move it to another major topic area, and if you post a thread that is unacceptable under the Lush guidelines, it may be removed entirely.

An incredibly talented, but modest Polar Bear, often mischievous, but never malicious!

How do you post something in an existing Forum thread? –  Search Code DB18

Find the thread you want. For example, again to keep things simple, under the first major Forum topic area, "Writing Resources", the first thread (which happens to be pinned, which means it was fixed in place as the first thread of this topic by the moderators) is called "Simplified Acceptable Content Guide".

Before you click on the title of that thread, look to the right side of that line. You will see two avatars, two numbers, and a time.

The two avatars are, first, of the person who initiated the thread (which in this case happens to be Nicola), and the second avatar is of the person who posted the last, or latest, post in this thread, which could be anyone.

The first number accompanies a little speech balloon icon. That is the number of posts in this thread. At time of writing, that number if "5", which means that there are (or were) a total of five posts in this thread.

The second number has an eye icon, and a decimal number, often with a "k" after it. This is the number of times people have viewed any part of this thread. At time of writing, that number was "3.1k", meaning that the thread has been viewed approximately 3,100 times since it was initiated.

The right-most date is in red, and is a clickable button. At time of writing, it said "3 days ago". This means that the last post on this thread was made three days ago.

Now, you can go to the first post on the thread, in order to find out more about what it is and why it was created, by clicking on the thread title, on the left hand side of the line.

Or you can go to the last comment posted on this thread by clicking on the time indicator of the last post, at the right hand side of this line.

You should try this out because doing it is easier than explaining it, or reading someone else's explanation of it.

How do you move an image into a private folder? –  Search Code DB19
Got to your avatar menu, the circular one at the RHS of the Red Menu and click on it.

Select "My Media". This will bring up those of your images that are visible to the public.

You will notice that the images are thumbnails, and rather fuzzy (because they're thumbnails).

At the top, RH corner of each thumbnail is a box with a downward-pointing arrow (caron). If you click on that, you now have seven choices:

Edit (allows you to do a limited rang of editing on the image – go ahead and experiment, I'm not going to go into it)

Delete (removes the image from "My Media")

Move (moves it to another album in "My Media". More on this below.)

--------

Remove from Gallery (which removes it from the public Gallery*, not your own image collection)

Set as Album Cover (sets this image as the cover of your public album. Why? Who knows?)

Set as Forum Avatar (and I'm not clear what this does – it doesn't seem to do anything

Set as Profile Photo (which is the photo used for your avatar, both in the square box in the LHS at the top of your profile, and in the round image at the top, RHS of the Red Menu)

Now, to move an image from your public album (which anyone visiting your profile can see) to another album (which limits access to selected individuals), click on the "Move" command, as described above.

A new pop-up window will appear that says ""Move Media", with a drop-down menu in the middle of the screen, and the label "Album" next to it.

Click on the white box to get the three drop-down choices:

Public (which moves the image to your public album if it's not already there)

Private (which moves it to a private album, which can only be accessed with your specific permission)

Story Cover Art (which moves it to a special album from which – let me guess – you can access to place as, um, story cover art if you want to publish a story)

Once you're selected the album you want the image moved to, click "Move". If you get a green caption, jiggling at the top RHS of your screen saying "Image moved successfully", then the image has been moved successfully, and you should now find that image in that album.

And if you think this is tedious to read, try writing it!

*The Public Gallery are any images that anyone has moved into their public gallery. In other words, anyone can see and snaffle the image for themselves. If you don't want that, then move the image into a private album.

To see what's in the Public Gallery, go to the Red Menu at the top of any page, and select "Gallery", which is between "Groups" and "Chatroom".

How do you post a YouTube video?

Find the YouTube video you want to post. Copy the URL (Internet address).

Go to where you want to paste it, then click on the camera icon.

A pop-up menu will appear that says "Add Media" at the top.

The default is "Yours". Instead, select "External".

There are again two choices. "Image" is the default. Select "YouTube".

A text box below now says "YouTube URL". Paste the URL of the YouTube video you copied in the first step. A window will appear below showing the video.

Select the button at the bottom right "Add".

N.B.: Unlike in Lush 1.0, you do not paste in the embedded html that YouTube can provide. Instead you only paste the URL of the page of the YouTube you want to post.

How do you find and see Forum threads?

Seeing Forum posts is easy. Go to the Red Menu above, and click on "Forum", between "Stories" and "Groups".

That will take you to a page called "Sex Stories Forum".

The Forum is broken up into six major topics:

  • Erotic Stories Writing and Reading Forum
  • General
  • Entertainment
  • This is hardcore (Member Access Only)
  • Technology and
  • Site Related

There are many sub-topics. Find the one (or ones) you want to explore and click on the title, such as the very first one, "Writing Resources" under "Erotic Stories Writing and Reading Forum".

Finding a thread that you have visited before can be trickier. Much trickier. At the top of a thread, you can select "Watch Topic", which will then notify you when anyone posts anything on that thread. However, the notification won't tell you which thread has just received a new post, so if you're following several different threads, it can be confusing.

Under the top line in "Forum", in the line just below "Sex Stories Forum", you can see "New Posts." If you click on this, you will see which posts have recently had new posts. It will list the 25 threads that have had the most recent posts. If the thread you are looking for is popular, it may show up here. However, there are a lot of games and fun, trivial threads like "What's the last thing you put in your mouth?", which may be fun, but tend to dominate the 25 top listings. Hence you are kind of at the mercy of what's popular now as it whether your thread is listed.

Another possibility, under the top menu, "Sex Stories Forum," is "My Posts". If you have posted to the thread you are looking for, clicking on this choice may help you find the thread you're looking for. If you post on a lot of threads, then you may have to search through them all to find the thread you're looking for.

Again under the top menu, "Sex Stories Forum", the next choice is "Search" with a magnifying glass. If you click on that, you can search Forum threads in a variety of different ways. However, I'm not much impressed with the search algorithm. At least, when I try using this, I usually get a "Page Not Found" message. But try it. It couldn't hoit (hurt).

The last choice under the top menu is "More", which is a catch-all for anything else they could think of. One potentially useful one is "Unanswered". This provides a list of all thread posts that have not yet been replied to. That may not help, but it can be interesting.

Beyond that, you're on your own, son (or daughter…or offspring, whatever).

Good luck.

How do you edit a Forum post?

This is more difficult than it should be because the button to initiate this action is hidden.

Go to the post you want to edit/change.

At the bottom RHS of the post are three symbols:

  • A downward-pointing arrow (caron)
  • Linked chains (for linking to this post from somewhere else)
  • And the close-quote symbol plus the word "Quote" (to quote this quote in another post)

Click on the caron. This will reveal two more choices:

  • Edit   and
  • Delete

Click on "Edit". This will place the post in an open text box that you can edit and change.

When you are finished making changes, click the "Save" button at the bottom RHS.

BTW, one thing you can do in Lush 2.0 that you could not do in Lush 1.0 is delete a post entirely by selecting "Delete" above.

How do I post an image to be used for cover art?

First, be aware that at the moment, cover art is (in my opinion) unreasonably restricted to a small, narrow size, with optimal dimensions of 512 pixels x 800 pixels. You can use images that are larger, or have different aspects (relative dimensions), but they will be forced to fit inside those dimensions. There has been a lot of grousing about this – including by yours truly!

When you have selected and/or prepared the image you want to use as cover art, you can upload it from any selected source – unlike images that you post on a friend's profile, or in a Forum post.

Click on the button that says "Write Your Own Story", which can be found on the home page.

You will be taken to the story submission page. Click on the rectangle near the top, left corner of the page that says "Cover Image". You will then be able to browse to the image you want to upload as your cover image.

If for some reason you change you mind, or selected the wrong image, the at the top right-hand corner of the image you will see a red circle with a white "X". Click on the X to delete that image and start again.

The image you have finally selected will be the image that appears in the centre of the first page of your story.
