Same here, I'm not liking that, I'd like to see more of my background image.
I've sent gav an email, see if he can have a look. Maybe giving us the option of having it how it used to be, I believe this was a recent change.

With the recent header change I made some css changes to make pages more consistent. One of them was to reduce the width of the profile pages to match the rest of the site (1000px).
I have added an option to make the white more transparent, you can change it at the bottom of the customize profile page.
Any good?

Could you put that around the pertinent parts of the profile info, like the bio, or perhaps have a choice of color for the words. For example I have a B&W pic and if i could make my words white.

I have added an option to use a dark theme. This will switch the transparency colour and the font colour. Any better?

Its only an option, which means you dont have to change anything if you dont want to, so Im not sure as to why its a bad call.
I actually like it. You can see more of my wallpaper, of which I took myself. Yeah, its not going to work for everyone, and if it doesnt, then just leave it alone. Well done Gav, two thumbs up here..
