Is this a glitch that the time someone was last online bears no connection to reality. I spoke to one friend last night but it says she was last online 3 days ago. This glitch seems to occur quire regularly.

Perhaps get rid of it if it cant be vaguely accurate?

Where are you looking please? Friends list?

Yes, friends list... but it also says last online 3 days ago on their profile page too.

Theres another friend who was on last night but its saying she was last online 1 month ago.. so it's not an isolated case

Have you taken in to consideration the platinum option, via privacy, to 'Always show me as offline'? Perhaps they are platinum members?

I get the sme thing. I message with a friend daily and she replies. But her profile and my friends list show she hasn't been on for a week. I thought it was just me.

There should be provision for that, though, not just some random number like the last time they were online before upgrading. Hide the last time online would be my thought. If they have have the platinum badge, that should explain why it's not there.

A poem for your enjoyment. Little something that came to me a couple days ago

No, some are platinum, some are not. And Platinum is supposed to show last online 2 hours ago while you are 'hidden online'. One of the platinum members that it says hasn't been online for days doesn't have the hidden option set. The one who it says hasn't been on in a month isn't platinum.

It's nothing to do with membership level. If you choose to hide your online status, I think it will always show as something like "90 days ago" or "3 months ago" or similar. Or maybe "2 hours ago". Not sure.

The issue you're seeing is more likely to do with session logins. Best guess is that the "last online" is taken from the login/logout log entries rather than a realtime query (which would bog the site down with thousands of people online at once).

People who use the 'remember me' checkbox or who leave their Lush session logged in on a browser tab will not generate a "login" event every time they visit the site. So the Last Online Time is really "Last time the user logged in by entering their password or their session timed out and they were forced to re-authenticate". But that's a bit long to display on the screen 😁

There's a slim chance the system takes the IP address into account, so users who hop from IP to IP (on a VPN for example) might show different online times depending on the last time they logged in via the same IP as they're using now. But I highly doubt that's the case. It's more likely the login session time.

Sorry this is tooooo long.

I agree with @deviantsusie. I have raised this enquiry last year with Tight1piece. About how the online status and last online stamps work. I was told it was inconclusive that the last online time may be the start time when they login or begins when they go offline.

My settings:

- "Always show me as offline" is selected

-"Remember Me" is enabled, site is fireproofed so I don't need 2 reauthenticate each time

-I switch VPNs (Proton and Nord) mostly using Proton with smut

-Android OS, Duckduckgo browser

-new tab is opened via bookmarks, tab is closed every after session

It shows "2 hrs ago" whenever I'm online which I understand is the stealth feature of the Platinum. It adds a chat bubble icon when I'm in the Chatroom whether you're in a PM, an actual private/public room, or even simply floating in the Chatroom but not in any room or PM.

Once offline it shows a progressive last online stamp that shows from minutes (if it was under an hour) until it reaches an hour to hours until it reaches a day then in days until it reaches a week to weeks until it teaches a month then months until it reaches 90 days.

I don't remember the last time I saw the login page but my current last online timestamp was reset days ago. I have been switching IPs (Proton VPN) but it's been counting days.

Regardless of the subscription type whether free or any of the premiums including Platinum, the last online/session time (after the user goes offline) varies.

Observed Scenario 1:

User A goes online for 5 mins. When she goes offline it shows she was last online "5 mins ago." She goes offline for 40 mins then back online at 1:45 for 15 mins. When she goes offline again, it shows she was last online "1 hrs ago" which originated from the 1:00 login as if she wasn't back online 15 mins ago.

-iPhone then Windows OS laptop used, no VPN, Chrome browser

Observed Scenario 2:

User B goes online for 5 mins. When she goes offline it shows she was last online "5 mins ago." She goes offline for 40 mins then back online at 1:45 for 15 mins. When she goes offline again, it shows she was last online "15 mins ago" which originated from the 1:45 login.

-Android phone, same IP on VPN, fireproofed site on Duckduckgo

Observed Scenario 3:

User C was last online "20 hours ago". She goes online for 2 hours. Once offline it shows she was last online "22 hours ago". She goes online the next day for a few hours. Once offline it shows she was last online "1 day ago". She goes online daily thereafter and it shows last online "2 days ago", "3 days ago", "4 days ago" and so on as if she wasn't online daily for several minutes to a few hours.

-daily IP switches via VPN, fireproofed site on Duckduckgo, tab used and browser are closed every after session, no reauthentication done, new session via favourited bookmark

Observed Scenario 4:

User D goes to the Chatroom daily but her last online shows it has been a month ago.

-unsubscribed member, no VPN used

P.S. You can message me if u need more info or test runs.

Thanks. This is consistent with my guess that it uses the log table to determine last online time.

It depends how each person in your scenarios "goes offline" or "goes online". Did they leave the Lush tab open, close the browser, use the Remember Me checkbox? Did their VPN cycle IP in the meantime?

It's not clear in the first two. But...

Scenario 3: no reauthentication means it's a REM (remembered, cookie) login, so no change in state. Therefore the time is counted from the last time they presented login details. So each day, the last online time will increment by one.

Scenario 4: no account, therefore no login event tied to them, so no way of knowing when they last logged in.

Also, different browsers use different mechanisms to deal with cookies and sessions and re-presenting credentials. Firefox treats an incognito session singularly. You are free to open new tabs to the same site and it'll share credentials. Safari (and maybe others) treat each tab in a private session as a silo and each tab needs reauthentication.

Think about how any web-based real-time system knows someone is "online". How does it know, when HTTP is, by design, stateless.

I'm typing this reply in a single browser tab in a textarea. I've been typing it for ten minutes or so. I haven't interacted with any of the other Lush tabs I have open. So, as far as the site thinks, I was "last seen online" ten minutes ago. If the site decides that five minutes of "inactivity" constitutes me "going offline" then it may have removed my online status indicator, even though I'm "using" the site.

As soon as I hit Submit, my stored credentials will be resent to the server along with my post. Lush might then update my status, or it might not. If it is programmed to consider 15 minutes of idle time as the period after which I am "offline" then as far as my status is concerned, I'm still active right now.

The point is, determining online status is fraught with nuances and the vagaries of HTTP statelessness. How a site chooses to harness the information and present it may not gel with what you or I deem "logical". But the bottom line is that the more messages and dialogue that goes back and forth between browser and server, and the more interaction with the database goes on, the slower the site is for everyone.

Thus, sometimes, developers use cached information such as "last time we saw login credentials for this user" as a baseline so as not to bog the database down with injecting up-to-the-minute log data for every page served to a user, and have endless packets of data flying around for very little real-world gain compared to keeping site performance reasonable.

So... what you're saying is its a bit pointless having a counter saying when someone was last online and it might be better to get rid of it?

Depends. Something is better than nothing. Vs nothing at all. Vs site performance. Vs who gives a fuck if it's not up-to-the-minute accurate. Pick your poison.
