Due to the way paypal works, it is not possible for our site to share enough information, to be able to pro rata upgrade someone.

In simple terms, we have to treat the upgrade process like a new membership, but add 365 days on to the existing membership expiry date.

So in your example, if someone joined as a Silver Member on 1 January 2015, and you gifted them a Gold membership today, then it would cost you the full Gold amount, but their account would be immediately upgraded to Gold status, and wouldn't run out until 1 January 2017.

It's a bit of a loophole in the system (someone could sign up as a Bronze member, then the next day, upgrade to Gold, and enjoy 2 years of Gold, at a 40% discounted rate), but if someone loves the site enough to do it, we are thrilled regardless!
