The key points are:

• as a free member you are limited to 8 mail messages/replies within a rolling 24 hour period. Silver is unlimited.

• you are only permitted 12 media items on your profile. Silver is 250.

• in the chat rooms you cannot 'private message' (PM). Silver you can.

I know from when I was on free for a bit recently that you can't start threads in the forums but I don't think I replied to any comments on my wall during that time so unsure.

No sorry part payment is not an option. If you want to use coins then yes you need the full amount.
