See snip below. Apparently, mentioning "G M a i l" gets blocked? I mean, I could see maybe having blocks on the domain given how popular it is with spammers, but just using the word in a sentence?

It is an attempt to stop not only spammers and scammers sharing external contact details but also genpop too since we ask that members do not do that publicly. Where did you see that please?

But for that you could block mention of Gmail.com. Referring to G-Mail in conversation like I did there is hardly a problem. And anyone with a brain can defeat brute force censoring algorithms, as I have now done twice. Better to have posts containing such info flagged for moderation.

EDIT: Oh shit, really? You are blocking the name but not the domain? That's completely defeating the purpose.

You would, I suspect, be quite surprised to see what variations of domain names particularly the spammers and scammers come up with in an attempt to avoid the blocked words but still make it clear to someone reading their profile, for example, how they can be contacted elsewhere. It is a deterrent; we try to do what we can to protect the members from being spammed and scammed.

It's kinda funny that the words "g mail" & "ya hoo" are blocked. But the likes of "Trillian" is not blocked. From my observations, most people in the chatrooms mention Trillian more than they do "g mail" & "ya hoo". They also have their Trillian contact details typed in their profile bio's. Kind of defeats the purpose of spammers, scammers & genpop from sharing external contact details, in my opinion.

I asked the development team, some time ago, to add Trillian to the list of blocked words so at some point that will be done. If anyone sees obvious external contact details on a profile then please help us and report the profile

Absolutely. Some will just write 'T' and their account name... just about everyone will know what that refers too. It's rather a no win situation to be honest... but hey ho say la vie (Oh and by the way I do French lessons at very reasonable rates per hour... just PM me for details).
