Jack. You are awesome. Totally hero level awesome.
You've run two and half times further in one day then when you started.
Proper respect for that.

HI Jack,
Thank you for accepting the challenge of long distance running. Here is my hope for you. That at the end of the half marathon you cross the finish line feeling accomplished of all your goals. As a seasoned Marathoner (Marine Corps in 2018 and Philly in 2019) here are two pieces of free advice in addition to any training plan you may like to follow!
1.) Eat right and drink lots of water! You will find that a better diet and staying hydrated will help you eek out the the last few miles you didnt think you had in you on race day.
2.) Listen. To. Your. Body. Seriously, there is pushing yourself and then there is hurting yourself. If you body is telling you that today might be good for an extra rest day. Listen. Often times pushing ourselves into injuries lead to the overall deteriment of our goals.
Good luck and remember...one foot in front of the other.
Feel free to PM me if you want to chat about this further!

thanks so much for the advice! item #1 may be the area i need the most improvement in. i have ups and downs with both the diet part and the water part--sometimes i do great, sometimes i do very poorly. hopefully i can get those habits under control and i really think that'll go a long way toward my progress.

Totally understand! Most do! I myself struggle with this. I have found very few diet plans that actually taste good enough to stick with and are statisfying. If i had to pick i would say that water and hydration plans are the most important. Feel free to PM me if you want to chat more about this!
last week on my speed interval day, i did 2.02 miles in 22 minutes. today i did 2.0 miles in under 20 minutes. that's objectively still a rotten pace, but to make that much progress in a week feels great.
Jack, stop beating yourself up.
You went faster then you did the last time. Aim to hold or beat your previous performance.
Don't compare that to some mythical standard, focus on being consistent.
If you must compare yourself to something race yourself from a week ago.
Keep it going buddy, you're doing great.

a touch slower tonight than in my 3.5 mile run, but i felt good the *entire* way tonight. running is starting to feel more natural, rather than something i'm forcing.
around the 2.7 mile mark, i thought "hey, only 1.3 miles left."
1.3 miles is what i did in total less than one month ago. that felt good.

well, the limited good news--i did 5 miles total, and that puts me where i wanted to be at the end of january. if i just spend the next two weeks improving that run (and i'd better) i'll still be where i want to be.
the bad news--i was humbled today. for the first time since i've been running, i had to walk part of it. it was chilly and breezy which turned into cold and windy which turned into snow...i was on a different course than usual, and it was hillier than i realized...i didn't warm up or hydrate like i should have. all that said, i really have nothing to blame today but hubris. i felt so good the other night on the 4 mile run that i decided to add more today. that might've been okay, but adding a mile was stupid.
live and learn. there's a long way to go and it's a process. it's a (half-)marathon, not a sprint, as they say.
Be proud of yourself, hydrate next time silly, warm up properly (says me frantically looking up how to do a bloody warm up. Don't judge me) and keep going.

i did a shorter distance today (2 miles) for my speed run. the last couple of weeks when i've done speed work, i've done intervals, and today i just wanted to do a shorter run and try to up my pace. i'm usually hovering around 10:30 for my mile pace, and today i was at a 9:27 mile pace. granted that's a short distance, but if i can keep working on my pace while i'm also working on distance, i'm happy with the progress.
the caveat today is that i don't know how accurate my gps is. it just didn't quite feel right today, so i google mapped the course when i got home, and a rough estimate of the course i ran came in at about 1.95 miles. that's not terribly far off, but it's enough to cause some concern.
ran the whole thing today. i was slow, but i mostly felt good throughout. and the GPS seemed to be right--what my phone told me was 5 miles was within a few feet of what google maps told me was 5 miles, and i'll write that off to straight-line error.
Ahem. You're doing remarkably well. Super work. Keep yourself hydrated, eat well. Look after yourself.
Thrilled you're still putting on the miles, wonderful courage.

That's how much quicker today's 5 mile run was than Wednesday's 5 mile run. Considering today's route was hillier and unfamiliar, I consider it a big win.
today's 2-mile speed run mile pace, 18 seconds slower than the same pace in the same run last sunday. that's the bad news. the good news is, it's still under 10:00, which has become consistent for the shorter runs, and it was in crappy weather conditions today. it helps to know that i don't have to have perfect conditions to keep the progress repeatable.
another five mile run today. i took 12 seconds off friday's average mile pace, and with that day's 16 second improvement over the previous wednesday, i've trimmed my mile pace on a 5-mile run by 28 seconds in just under a week. it's still not a great pace but i'm proud of the drop.
Just a one-mile speed run today but I broke a 9 minute mile for the first time. I couldn't have maintained that pace for very long, but just being able to hit it at all, compared to where I've been, is a positive step.
tonight's good news--i got my third run in this week. events of the weekend conspired to keep me from running until 11pm tonight. i was going on 4 hours of sleep last night, i was running into a bitter cold wind, and when i got home i had ice on my hat, but over 3+ miles (i did a 5k tonight) my average mile pace was better than the last time i ran 3 miles, one month ago yesterday, by 1:07. 11:11 then, 10:04 now. i'm getting stronger and faster, slowly but surely.
tonight's bad news--sheer tyranny of will won't take me much farther. i had to walk a couple of times tonight, and i just can't muscle through runs for much greater distances. i have to learn to start taking better care of myself, in diet, and sleep, and planning for the best time to run.
nothing remarkable tonight. i ran at the gym on the indoor track, first time i'd done that and it was super hot instead of super cold as when running outside. i added a quarter mile and i was a little slower than the 5.0 mile runs. onward and upward.
i had to walk a few short stretches, but i did 5.5 miles at a 10:08 mile pace. that's the quickest i've been on any distance over 5k, so i'm pretty pleased--not a great pace still, but i'm seeing definite improvements.
tonight's number was supposed to be 5.75, but i got there and decided to get a little ahead and do 6 miles even. then i figured i'd finish out a 10k. then i figured, heck, let's just knock out half the total distance.
one mile speed run today, 8:28, 22 second improvement over one mile speed run a couple of weeks ago. maybe it's pessimistic but i think i'm pushing the limit of my mile pace. i can't see getting much faster than today, and i definitely can't see keeping that pace up for significant distances.
you're doing us all proud Jack, pounding that road under your shoes one step at a time.
Celebrate your victories, no matter how small they may seem.
You're doing remarkably well and you are kicking ass every time you go out and run.
Go Jack!!!

because of the winter weather i had to run on the indoor track at the gym again. the distance is approximate so i just get a very vague feel for my pace there, but i estimate my 5k pace per mile was about 17 seconds slower today than the last time i did a 5k distance. BUT...in the middle of the worst snowstorm we've had in the last few years, i'm getting my runs in. so that's something.
i was worried tonight. the weather last week kept me mostly inside, and i only got one run in. my weekly long run was early in the previous week, so i hadn't had a substantial run in 2 weeks exactly. i felt good starting out (i usually know in the first quarter mile how it's gonna go) but i worried that i'd just be gassed later. my pace was a little slower than the last long one (7 miles at 10:33/mile, compared to 6.6 miles at 10:19/mile) but i felt fairly strong the whole way.
