I have a windows phone. It also has 'Wi-Fi sense' which I keep turned off at all times. My biggest regret was buying the damn thing in the first place as most of the useful apps are android/apple! At the very first opportunity it will be 'Bye Bye Microsoft Lumia' and 'Hello ANY Android'!

I asked a friend of mine at work who used to work for Microsoft if he'd upgraded yet. His response was "hell no! I worked for them for too long to go rushing head long into upgrading that fast! Let the work out the kinks and then I'll upgrade." Wise man. There is a difference between being on the leading edge of technology and the bleeding edge. Let the masses get the kinks worked out first, THEN upgrade. Also, watch the news for the "gotchas" like the Wi-Fi sense. Here is one of the many articles talking about how to stop Windows 10 from spying on you. How To Stop Windows 10 Spying Also, for those concerned about your bandwidth, look up Windows 10 and WUDO (Windows Update Delivery Optimization).

I will eventually upgrade but I'm going to wait a couple of weeks more. They just released their first round of patches and I'm sure a couple are to follow. Besides, the latest group of patches is causing some issues with booting/crashing loops oh and if you has an Asus laptop, don't even try it without a full backup. There are articles that people with those are having issues with it wiping out their hard drives. At the moment, I'm just making a list of things to disable etc so when I get it, I will know what all to turn off.

I'm not trying to sound like a conspiracy theorist but hey, I've worked in IT too long to trust the software company on the corner giving away free candy.
If you are on windows 7, stay on it! Avoid 10 like the plague! I was quite happily on XP until they started closing it down, when I then went on to Windows 8.1 and headed for a nervous breakdown. Now I understand that 7 is similar to XP, but 8.1 is a different country. In fact, it's a different world. You have to start learning all over again.

I took the upgrade to 10, and find it not much different from 8, - more bells and whistles which I shall never use, and perhaps a lot of trouble in store, if previous posts are anything to go on. Of course I'm a complete amateur where computers are concerned, - like most people, I suspect, - I can switch on, get on to the net, email, (even that was different) do the normal everyday things, but beyond that, all the technicalities escape me, so if you are satisfied with your windows 7, stay there and stay happy!

Just did, the day before yesterday. Had been quite reluctant to do so, as previous upgrades didn't all go very well for me. But until now everything worked out just fine. Hopefully that doesn't change when I get back to the office and try to access our servers there. Had some serious recurring issues with that after previous upgrades.

A Macbook would probably be a better option, however at £1599 for a 15" here in the UK, it's out of the question. You can buy a cute looking Lenovo for £700.

Apple shoot themselves in the foot with their pricing.

The best thing about Apple in my opinion is their hardware. And the fact that the software is specificly made for this hardware. Can still be a pain in the ass though, but overall the experience is better than Windows in my opinion. The most annoying thing about Apple is their push for iTunes and iCloud.
I have a 13" MacBook Pro and for regular use (web, office, etc.) that's a big enough screen size for me, and a MacBook Air would do fine. If you wanna run Photoshop or similar programs you may wanna connect a bigger screen though.

No problem for me too. Working pretty well. Even the audio is better...

Until Microsoft withdraws extended support for 7 and you don't get security patches anymore. None. Not even for that nasty browser bug that lets Dr. Evil take controls of your computer. Then staying happy on 7 could be a bit of a trick.

Admittedly, that's not going to happen until 2020 but if MS sticks with their plans to move to incremental updates rather than new releases going forward, you will essentially have to upgrade to 10 by January 14, 2020 to get onto that program and get new updates. Ie. there may not be a Windows 11, just updates to 10. Eventually the "10" will likely get dropped and they will just call it "Windows" or something.

I have not used 10 yet, myself, but a friend updated their Surface Pro and says they much prefer it to 8.1.
Oh, and if you are still using XP, get the hell on to 7, 8.1, or 10. Windows XP has been out of extended support for over a year now so you're a sitting duck.

You get what you pay for. I used PC's for years (went through 4 of them!), and spent a fortune getting them debugged every few months (even with state-of-the-art malware protection). I started using Macbook Pro's in 2007, and I'll never look back! Mine have never gotten viruses, trojans, etc. and I've never had to have them cleaned. I'm on my second 15" Macbook Pro with solid-state storage, 8 gigs of memory, retina screen resolution... It's lightning fast, runs cool and quiet, lightweight, and power-up to browser is always less than 5 seconds. PC's were always a huge time-waster, waiting for them to boot and scan at start-up, then freeze all the time. Mac for me!

If all this is true I'm gonna buy a Mac. I get pissed at the whole PC upgrade merry-go-round and the constant virus upgrades that turn into a virus. My son is a pro and has been at me to switch to Apple for years. For some reason I just keep buying the latest greatest PC. They have not earned my blind loyalty.

My advice to everyone would be to hang on for six months and wait for all the inevitable teething problems to be sorted first.

This reminds me of when Apple rolled out it's iOS 8 for the iPads and iPhones. My school send down a DO NO UPGRADE warming so I went from September of last year (or was it October... I know it was in the 1st quarter of the school year for me) until June this year when at a training they said, "UPGRADE YOUR OS" & I got scolded for not doing it sooner. UGH! I didn't even update my personal iPad until after I did it to my work iPad. The positive was that the bulk of the "bugs" with 8 had been worked out by then.

I have no problem waiting to go from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Maybe it will be like with my iPad... by the time I upgrade my laptop, the bulk of the bugs will have been worked out.
Have it and currently working very well

Windows Update searches for some third party software updates in addition to MS so try that. Also try going to the manufacturers website and look for driver updates. Do be careful however of going to the sites that claim they have all the drivers in the world!.

Strange that at W10 it expects a lower version of the audio driver *confused*. Perhaps its a software update you need and not specifically the driver alone.

Yosemite had a few issues when I upgraded. I was hoping for some things to get faster, but overall, I see no net change.

Spotlight just seems to be a total waste of time.

I would not rush to Yosemite. El Capitain will arrive around year-end. It might be worthwhile skipping over Yosemite.

I've had 3 desktop computers since 1989. So that's 26 years. That's 3 CPUs & 3 motherboards. 4 power supplies, three cases, and I've had access to laptops owned by various companies I've worked for since 1998, and I've a 2008 HP entertainment laptop - I use now when I travel, it's about 10 times slower than my desktop, but that's to be expected. It's the emergency entertainment device, I'm often non-internet accessible when I am using it.

I built my last two personal computers with no assistance and my 1st pc, I was allowed to watch the guy I bought it from - build it. I basically drive them til they just quit working - or the CPU won't support the latest majority of software I wish to utilize.

All told, I've spent nearly $8000 usd on personal computing over 26 years. They've helped me earn multiples of that amount, too. I've gone through a dozen hard drives (and currently utilize 6 of them and two SSDs as boot drives in my laptop and desktop). Sure, I get viruses, everyone does. They don't freak me out. Windows & PCs are used by the vast majority of people the world over - hence they are the largest target of hackers. I fix the annoyances and carry on.

I've used every release of Windows operating software dating from Win95. Used MS-DOS before that was released.

I've played around with Linux & Unix, and frankly - that's the A ticket. My laptop sees maybe 2 or 3 weeks of use a year. Constant use of a laptop, with the heat they generate and the lack of air filtration they afford (plus how roughly they are usually handled) is what sends 99% of them to an early grave.

When I bought my first 25Mhz 386 clone, I knew nothing about the thing. So I broke it quickly and often, and fixed it myself. At least they can be diagnosed and worked upon with common, inexpensive tools and some easily found knowledge (google) when necessary. I've never paid another person to repair any computer equipment. Fck that noise.

Apple tried to mystify their product (it helped their marketing strategy to do so) as well as make them highly proprietary and closed-off and Steve Jobs convinced millions of people that they were too ignorant to learn about how a PC operates. Pay them their ransom and they'll give you what they tell you - you should have & need. They charge an arm & a leg for their units...then when those things need repair, they charge you your other arm and leg to fix it - or recommend you just buy a brand new one, to...you know, be on the cutting edge again.

I guess if you have money to burn, Apple is there for you.

So in order to own a PC that will last you as long as a Macbook Pro you have to be a total geek?

That's like having to be a mechanic to own a certain type of car and then claiming it's better because you know how to fix it every time it breaks down.

Does -or- will, the Mac you mentioned, last 10 to 11 years without a major component failure?

I bet even you could replace any item inside of any pc and get it back to working status. You can't do that with a Macbook Pro.

Total geekdom not required to operate and maintain a desktop. Just a little self determination & curiosity. Or are you lacking all of that, too?

I have an iMac from 2002 that still works perfectly fine. My current MacBook pro is about 6 years old and will keep working past the time my desire to buy a new one comes.

In essence, you're saying that your 2002 era iMac is still superlative and quite useful, yet you also have a newer, more expensive MacBook Pro which you use (probably 100% of the time, since it's so much more powerful)...It's prudent to keep a back up unit for when you're main rig shits the bed -- better to have and never need, than need and never have. I donate the old units after I upgrade. But, hey, whatever floats your boat.

First of all, you can't even quote properly. 6 fucking years you have been a member here and you still can't do it right.

My iMac can run programs new computers can't without a subscription. Photoshop being one of those. I also have the very first ipod ever released and I suppose I still have both because they are more collectors items now than tools. Something a PC will never be, by the way. Them being collectors items has nothing to do with your claim that there are no apples that can work for more than a decade without having to replace the parts though. How would you know anyway? Obviously, you can't afford one since you always mention their price when talking about apples.

And that sucks for the poor kid that gets your jizz and beer soaked donated dell... Probably why you have to replace the parts so often. lol

Heh, settle down big shooter before your taped up glasses get all scratched up against your shirt pocket digital calculator. You're a computer collector/investor as well as a redundant system storage maven.

Aren't you surprisingly super geeky. How much have you donated to Apple pensions over the years?

Blows me out of the proverbial water -- all around.

Make sure you back that thing up on a hard drive.
Windows sucks! I'm almost 30 and I have a PowerMac from middle school that still works. I also have an old Mac G5, and a new iMac. Using anything Windows for work is fucking miserable and counter productive. All it does is fuck up all the time, freezes, crashes, loses the internet. We replaced our PCs at work with Macs and the IT Dept doesn't have anything to do anymore. Windows can go toss someone's salad! Did I state that elegantly enough?
I have a pc, laptop and phone. I loaded 10 onto pc and so far, I am not willing to do same with laptop (8) until 10 improves, which it is, slowly.
Windows phone? Now in the bin and replaced with Android after just three months of living hell! Most of the apps I used were unavailable on windows and those that were became nothing but trouble. Also, I couldn't get it to tether with laptop for mobile internet which I can with android. Laptop could see it and registered connection but no traffic, even though same os.

My current PC is windows 7, and it works as well as I'd like it to. I'll 'upgrade' when I run this one into the ground and buy another computer (probably in another year or two). In the mean time, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, as they say.

Don't believe everything that you read.
