Why they had to change from XP I will never know.
I have a new PC with 10 and its a pain in the ass to learn the new and complicated ways of operating it.
I have kept the old XP one as well for when I get so frustrated and want to chuck 10 out the window.
Speaking as one who has managed Windows systems for twenty-ish years, I'd say that XP, after its second service pack, was one of the great versions of the operating system. But it was getting long in the tooth and, from a corporate standpoint, was Swiss cheese when it came to security. However, Windows 7 was a more than adequate replacement and they should have built on that instead of going in the new direction that gave us 8, 8.1, and 10.
Currently, I'm running 7 on my home machines and 8.1 with an add-on to restore the Start menu (Classic Shell, it's free) at work. If someone asked me to recommend a current version of Windows, I'd recommend one of those rather than 10. 7 is in extended support (ie. still getting security fixes) until 2020 and 8.1 is still in mainstream support until 2018, then extended support until 2023 so both are not going away any time soon. So if you can get you hands on one of those, go for it rather than 10 is my advice.
