My wife's (Sugarbaby) computer got a virus or something the other day and now it's a doorstop! It won't open IE or Firefox, It won't transfer files or open them, it won't do much of anything online - it just sits there and spins.

We talked to some people about what to do and some recommend crashing the computer using restore disks, we talked about getting a new computer. We even talked about having a professional company clean it up.

What I would like to know from you all is what is the best kick-ass, take-no-prisoners, Agent Orange type of antivirus out there. Also the mention of a Malware program was also brought up. What Malware does everyone recommend?

If you cant download anything or even get a browser to work just how are you going to install antivirus/malware software. Sounds like you will need to acquire the media to install anything.

If its a Windows platform does it not have Windows Defender on it already?

Good move .. I do hope you tried the usual troubleshooting techniques first .. power on/off, swear at it and then hit it with a hammer a few times smile

Sounds like you need to remove the virus first. I don't know how it will work, I have never needed one, but they have been advertising on TV a product called "Fix Me Stick". It's a thumb drive that claims to remove any virus and I think malware too. You may have to whip the hard drive clean then reinstall your software and operating system.

I use to use AVG for virus and malware protection on my desk top before August of 12. I was pleased with the free version then bought the up graded version. I never got a virus problem. It caught a lot of attempts to attack my computer. It would notify me each time and gave the name of it. Hurricane Isaac took out my computer and have not replaced it yet. Using an IPad until we get back in our home.

Good luck

I've been using Norton for years, and it's great. The premium has all the anti virus, malware, backup etc. in one product. As well you can put it on up to 5 devices on one subscription. I wouldn't use anything else.

Some times your internet provider will give you free antivirus... They usually have the most up to date and certainly dont want viruses on their system... I have used Norton's from them for years... Havent had an issue yet...

Because we have an older version of Windows and a fairly old computer, some of the antivirus programs aren't compatible. NawtyGuy504 mentioned his success with AVG, that's what we have and works very well.

As some people already said you are gonna need to fix the computer first! Probably if it's serious you'll have to format your hard disk and if it's much worse it might be better to just buy a new one! Now as far as Antivirus/Internet Security software goes you might wanna to your own research! Most pc-related websites do their own tests on each software every year and post the results! It all depends on your needs and criteria as well, if you want a free-to-use software or to buy one! Personally I've been using Mcaffee for the last few years and I'm very happy with it and with how much it costs! I suggests you do your own research and decide for yourself! You can use these websites if you want or do your own google search! smile

Norton seems to work well for me. However, I don't frequent porn sites. They can test the limits of your anti-virus software. Thing is that there are for some reason assholes out there working hard to hurt other people. No matter what you have, it is not fool proof.

Got your pm but I will answer here in case this crops up again or its useful now to anyone else.

I use Google Chrome so the commands are pertinent to that browser .. hopefully you can work them out for whatever you use if its not Chrome.

To post images that reside in your image gallery here or a photo album simply hover the cursor/pointer over the image and right click and select Copy Image Address.

With the cursor/pointer in the message box in a chat room right click and select Paste. This should result in a valid web address/url now visible in the message box. Send.

The above should work for any image residing on the www as long as its of file type .jpeg, .jpg, .png or .gif.
