I am going with the "overdressed", although I can't imagine ever actually being overdressed, since I wear the same simple 14k earrings with a matching pendant on a box chain necklace, and pretty much stick to a plain but flattering black shift dress and medium high heels when going anywhere, not terribly interesting but it works in 99.5% of occasions.

I live somewhere where smart/casual is preferable to actually overdressed. A few years ago I went with a bunch of girls to celebrate a birthday of one of them at a very grand hotel for afternoon tea. One girl wore a garden-party type dress (and afterwards said she felt embarrassingly over dressed, like she was left over from a wedding) and at the other extreme a few girls wore coloured jeans and leather jackets which was a bit over-casual for the venue. I was somewhere in the middle, which is how I usually try to judge it - smart enough to look dressed up, casual enough not look out of place.
Under~with back up accessories in my bag~like sunscreen and bracelets
sigh, living in CA, flipflops and shorts can be over dressed...
i miss NY, and that's how i dress.
overdressed. i showed up underdressed to one function and vowed to never do it again. felt WAY too uncomfortable.

Say. Her. Name.

Overdressed.
I have been guilty - but used the excuse I was going onto another function after this one.

I would certainly rather be overdressed than under-dressed at an affair of some kind
Best to be overdressed.... you can always strip down.... smile
I'm going to go with overdressed. Underdressed, I feel like a slob, and disrespectful. Overdressed, I feel like a gentleman.
Overdressed. I seriously doubt whether I have ever been underdressed in my entire adult life. I especially love getting dressed up.
In my world I try to dress one step above what is expected so overdressed tends to win...
At any given time I own at most two pairs of jeans and two pairs of dress pants. I live in skirts and dresses even if just at the beach or the carnival. Underdressed is just not my thing. Even in Michigan in 12" of snow. That's why they make high heeled boots and tights.
Overdressed - you can always remove or loosen something to make overdressed not appear to be too overdressed. It's hard to go the other way.

I am a perpetual underdresser (that's "under" not "un" you dirty minds, though I do undress a lot, too ) but I agree that from a social standpoint, overdressed is probably preferable.

Overdressed always.
Overdressed, for sure. You can always say you are coming from or going to some event more formal.

Late high school/early college, I'd have said 'overdressed'. Now, almost done with my bachelor's, I'm gonna have to go with 'underdressed'. I feel like I make it work since I wear mostly black clothing, which looks pretty sleek even if it's a $10 outfit from the thrift store (as long as it's tailored!).
Forever overdressed--looking frumpy isn't my thing.

If you show up for a social gathering and discover you are not dressed right for the occasion, do you prefer to be overdressed or underdressed?

Personally, I'd usually rather be overdressed than underdressed. I feel even more conspicuous if I'm underdressed.

I'd rather be undressed at a social gathering.

That's why you were always invited to every fraternity party on campus.
Everyone always invites me to 'come-as-you-are' parties, and since I'm a nudist, well... I'm usually the one underdressed.

I probably tend towards underdressed. I am a person who dresses for comfort, not look or style (e.g. I only wear ties when absolutely necessary because I find them very uncomfortable). That said, I think the others are likely correct. From a purely social standpoint, over is probably a bit better.
