My parents unfortunately left it up to the school system up until I needed birth control in my teens because of severe menstrual complications. My parents' whole approach to sex back then is pretty hilarious to me now, because they're so open about it now. My mom calls asking me questions about something she's heard of or the safest way to try something, and my dad loves raunchy jokes, usually involving my mom. It's pretty gross.

I'd like to think that I'd be pretty open with my kids (if/when I have them) when it comes to discussing sex when the time comes. I really can't see anyone else I'd trust with that responsibility.


I think there are plenty like yourself. Finding out from friends. Sexuality is a natural curiosity for all teens. They see and feel the hormonal changes happening to them. I remember when I had the "talk" with my son. It was hilarious. He said, ewwww you and mom did that?

My parents were divorced, and I think each of them expected the other to have 'the talk' with me, but neither of them did (apart from the general message that being sexual in anyway was perverted, and if girls found out that I had those kinds of thoughts, they'd be creeped out). I guess my first understandings about sex were absorbed through general culture (music, movies, books, etc.), and from other boys at school. Eventually we got sex education classes that were a more reliable source of information than what I could piece together on my own. After that came porn, and then my own experiences with my first girlfriend.

Hubbie grew up in the country in central Louisiana and tells me the same thing. He feels that growing up with farms and livestock all around you makes for a better well rounded education.
