Usually it's the unexpected. When I am not looking for anyone or not feeling desperate that's when I meet somebody. Seriously though, it would depends on what you're looking. Based on the preface of your post, d-bags played a part in going celibate. From that, it'd seem you'd want to go the casual path were there are no expectations or romance, and to avoid being treated badly by the assholes again. It gets you "back on the horse" as you say.
As for fuck buddy route, depends. You'd have to establish trust with the guy if you go that route and have that upfront at the beginning.
