I've always been a big fan of lyrics that tried to convey a point, express something the writer has learned from experience or perhaps a personal view on a subject he or she would like to pass on to the listener. For instance "sweet Virginia cigarette burning in my hand you used to be a friend of mine but now I understand and I know that you're going to get me somewhere along the line" Billy Joel. Or how about "all the knowledge in the world is of no use to fools" The Eagles. Another one of my favorites:
"Remember when you were young?
You shone like the sun.
Shine on, you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
Shine on, you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom,
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target
for faraway laughter;
Come on you stranger, you legend,
You martyr, and shine
You reached for the secret
too soon"
And the song I credit with making a huge difference in the direction in my life,

"Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
Fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say.

The last two are by Pink Floyd and to explain why they spoke to me is I heard both in the mid to late 70's and was busy partying way too much and in spite of my knowing I had it in me to be anything I wanted to be I was in no hurry to get started. Well I knew being high 24/7 on one thing or another was a dead end street and I also knew enough people In their late 20's and 30's who were struggling to make ends meet and many had told me, dude I had so much fun when I was like you, enjoy it while you can!

Well at 17 I went to work in a big way. two full time jobs, cut the party down to one night a week, gave my folks half my take home pay to invest for me and never bought anything I couldn't pay cash for. I could have gone to college but at the time I just knew I wasn't ready so at 20 I joined the Navy signing up for 6 years and being trained to be an electronics tech. Six years later to the day I flipped a dollar coin over my back as I walked off the ship and said "thanks for the ride". I was in college two months later with the right attitude and two and a half years later I had two degrees and a minor with a 3.9 GPA. Twenty years later after working my ass off, never having kids, getting married, taking days off or going on vacation I was retired and I haven't looked back to this day.

Now I'm not saying that musical lyrics helped me make my life what it became but they had an impact, no doubt!

And then so many times,
you practice in your mirror
to be just like me, but you just can't see
you ain't got the balls son!
