i'm not sure i can answer why men cheat, but i can tell you why i did.
No lame cliched excuses.
i cheated because i could. I love my partner but we have been together for 10 years and 2 children. He will not marry me as he doesn't feel it is important. This makes me feel unsexy and overlooked. When i go out i feel that i need to flirt. The flirting makes me feel sexy and if he wants more then even better. The sex is just that, sex to make me feel sexy. I could never have an affair.

Men cheat because they are horny and/or neglected. If a couple in a marriage has no or very little sex that's just a sign of a bigger issue. Either husband or wife or both have become disconnected. They may actually be great friends and very much love the other. But the passion and desire is gone. Take your typical guy who no longer excites his wife... another woman falling for his charms, laughing at his jokes, craves his gaze, unable to hide her smile when he's around... that stuff is intoxicating to a man who has lost his "game". Sex is just the payoff. Men cheat to feel better about themselves even if it only lasts for the few minutes he's actually fucking someone.

People have always wanted what they shouldn't have. if someone says don't touch that, most people want to run over and touch it. It its just a human trait, a terrible trait, but a trait of people never the less. I have never cheated, but like everyone I have been tempted. It is just a personal decision within a person whether to cheat or not.

... and yes I have been involved in a long term 'clandestine' relationship long ago in past. It was exciting and dangerous as was mentioned previously. Sharon was very adventerous and did stuff with me that my long ago ex wife would not participate in... Sharon was also married as well so I guess that made us feel safe about it in a strange kind of way.
These days I fantasize, but I will not cheat on my girlfriend. It would leave me with a very dirty feeling and I would not know how to deal with that feeling very well. Also, I just have no desire to be that hurtful towards her. It would suck.
I'd say a better question is, "Why do PEOPLE cheat?"
Underneath it's the same for men and women. Dissatisfaction with the relationship, the "pasture is greener on the other side" mentality, two people who shouldn't be in the relationship to begin with, personality issues, etc.
People are timid most of the time. They'd rather embrace behavior that is destructive to the relationship itself to signal the end of the relationship than talk about it directly (because talking is somehow more "confrontational").
I agree with _mal_. Been there and it is not good.
Also I would like to add a person with a Passive Aggressive behavior would be more likely to cheat in my opinion. Again I have seen this first hand.
Why do women cheat? I think it is the individual.
I am not a cheater, was accused before and it did not go well but I didn't.
Men and women cheat for all reasons. Some will say they were neglected or they liked the excitement. My husband cheated and had no excuses. I love sex and I carried his meals to him. Treated him good. If I had the answer I would tell you. It took me a while to figure out I done nothing wrong. I was a virgin when we had sex together. He had it all and gave it up for a woman that took him for money. Now he has nothing.
Men that cheat are not ready to have commitments and their relationship is lacking excitement.

I personally know woman who have cheated on their boyfriend/husband. So, it works both ways. Why do people cheat, could be to expand their sexual horizons. Is it really cheating if they never intend on leaving their significant other? Is it just another form of cardiovascular exercise with a different partner?
I don't cheat. If you knew what my sex life was like, you would swear that the reason I don't cheat is because I'm too stupid to seek satisfaction elsewhere. I took my vows seriously. Maybe that's the same thing.
