Saw a story on MSNBC a few months ago. It claimed that approx. 60% of chat room visitors were representing themselves as the opposite sex.

That sounds about right`. Some genuine posters, more pretend ones. It's interesting that some people seem to be either oblivious or furiously denying that this even happens. I think it's a genuinely interesting phenomenon which I'd like to undserstand, but by its very nature that's hard to do.

I wonder where they came up with that number from.

Back in the AOL days, when I was younger, I use to pretend that I was a cisgender woman, a straight cisgender woman. Yet, it never felt right to me. I eventually started to just be myself, a transgender woman.

To the OP, I would suggest a it's a significantly higher % when compared to the % of guys who actually have porn star sized cocks smile

Buz is right, the %age of female users here is roughly a third. The numbers get a bit more interesting though when you look at how women use the site - especially by orientation.

42% of the Chat Room Legends who joined Lush in the last 12 months are female. For Authors the figure is even closer to parity - 46%. Between these groups there's a large disparity in orientation.

Exactly half of the female Chat Legends put themselves as Bi-sexual, 1 in 5 said Lesbian and the same number said Straight. Whereas, almost 40% of female Authors who joined the site in the last year are Straight but only 7% are Lesbian.

Of course these figures don't tell you about all the so-called couples accounts or the "I'm married to a wonderful man (whose cock is in the gallery below) and only here to chat with hot women" or people who just like to pretend to be 19 year old bikini models. But of the 4662 females who used the site in the last month most are genuine (to a degree). There's a huge variety of people here and that's a very good thing.

You can't work on the assumption that a female account is genuine just because it has the sexual orientation set as straight. That's preposterous.

I'm pretty sure there are a fair number of homosexual men on here with a penchant for straight guys using fake female accounts to lure straight men. And they will have their female sexual orientation set as straight.

In fact, there is no way of knowing who is logged into an account at any given time. Several different people could be logging into a single account. It could be a woman one day, then a man the next.

The only way of knowing who is behind an account at any given time is by skyping with them when communicating online.

Exactly, have you ever noticed, in almost, oh hell, in ALL the social webs, when you become interested insomeone and sky them if they have Skype or Yahoo, they almost always come back with: my cam is broken, I Don't have a cam, I'm intending to buy one< well thats a dead giveaway in my mind that they either are A: a man poseing, B: A woman leading youon....... either way, not worth pursuing

Most women who say that are really saying "look, i came here to get off, not to show a complete stranger my tits." A lot of times they would actually be better off saying that rather trying to spare someone's feelings with one of those excuses.

Yes it could be a gay guy but let's face it - there are plenty of bi blokes here that would be far easier and more rewarding hits. Guys generally don't want to put that amount of work in.

Who is making the assumption that Genuine = Straight!?

You're making an assumption when you say that there are predatory gay guys here looking for straight guys when all you have is guesswork. Having been here a while you get to realise, there is no "average" lush user - everyone comes here for different reasons. Are there gay guys posing as women - yeah, probably but not in the numbers you think - and nowhere near the number of straight guys posing as bisexual women.

Comfort yourself in the knowledge that most of those guys posing as women are spending most of their lush time talking to other guys posing as women.

Or C: your work colleagues playing a trick on you and pretending to be a pretty brunette to get you to divulge loads of intimate and sensitive information about yourself before connecting with you via and then falling about laughing when they appear on your laptop screen.

That happened to me once. I've never forgiven them, the fucking bastards.

I really can't understand why anyone would fake a profile. The only reason I can think of is if your a male and no one is responding to you; out of loneliness, at least someone might respond to you if they think you are a women. I must admit, I get very few blind messages from anyone, but then, I have to admit, my profile information is pretty lame!! LOL

It may have been mentioned once or twice... but there seems to be a very high proportion of gorgeous lesbian or bi women on here, or straight women 'only interested in women' who sound very like male fantasies of lesbian and bi women.

Yes, I know this is not the most observant or original comment but I was just browsing profiles after some time away and picturing lots of middle aged blokes wanking together while pretending to be women and deluding themselves the other bloke is too. It kind of amuses me.

I guess we can't ask as they are in denial, but I wonder if it really matters to them if the people they chat to are what they say they are? Are there any interviews or any theories anywhere of why men pretend to be women - or why others fall for it?

If this is true, and granted it may well be, but how sad is it that many gay men still feel so ex communicated from society that they'd feel more comfortable "passing" as a woman, I've seen very few gay men here and this to me is a reflection of our society.
As a lesbian I can say this with some certainty. These men aren't in denial, they fear rejection from straight men here. It's not that they "want" a straight guy, it's all the hate speak they have endured growing up gay. I'm sure they'd much rather friend other gay men. I'm feel so lucky to have found Lush, and have been so welcomed here that I'm free to be me. I just wonder if they do?
I'd love to hear from the gay guys here to get their spin on this

I really have to wonder how they came up with that number? I'd guess it's made up to get more viewers. Seems a bit too high to be true. Don't believe everything you see on tv

Forget about the guys pretending to be lesbians because it's easier to get nudes from some of the more naive chicks that way...

What percentage of women who are actually women are using stolen pics that are actually a friend of theirs or just random pics from the Internet? That number is pretty damn high too.

By my sophisticated calculations I have deduced that only about 2% of straight females aren't butt ugly and will actually use pictures of themselves that were taken in this decade.

The men on Lush outnumber the women by many and most of those men are out to lunch. Its very simple to figure out why.

that means a sexy avatar that's not "genuine", so be it. I personally use avatars that represent who I really am, not necessarily how I really look. I do say so in my profile. I don't think it's fair to say that straight women using alternate avatars are "butt ugly"...
Felix, are you really a cartoon cat? Come on now.

I agree that avatars can be anything you like. An avatar is a image or an icon that represents us in the forum.

But I've read Felix's post 10 times and I can't see where he mentions avatars. I could be wrong, but I think he's referring to the general picture gallery.

That's just a random number plucked out of thin air; it means nothing.

I can do it myself. I'll show you:

"Approximately 85% of female accounts on Lush are men posing as women". See, we can all make a claim that has no credibility.

My point is, it's impossible for anyone to determine how many people are representing themselves as the opposite sex on this website or any social media site. The only way to get an accurate figure is to make every person posing as the opposite sex to confess and admit they're lying. As far as I know that's never happened -- ever. And it's never likely to happen.

Furthermore, each profile could have multiple users. It could be a man logged in one day, a woman the next, then their pet chimpanzee the following day.

I love the fact that we are free to really express who we are here, and if that means a sexy avatar that's not "genuine", so be it. Felix, are you really a cartoon cat? Come on now. Anyway, this is a site for artist it's to share their craft. It's erotica, yes, but no one really reads stories on the blue site, do they? It's sort of existential. It's the perception of who we really are not what society has made us. I love the freedom here to be myself and express myself for who I am and not who society wants me to be.

Blah blah blah.. You know I meant the pictures people try to pass off as themselves. Either in their gallery or the ones they send to other people or the ones they post in the forum.

For example, stealing someone's picture of her breasts to claim they are your own has nothing to do with your "who I really am" bullshit. Give me a break.

That explains my bad luck in chat. I would log in to chat every third day and all I got was pet chimpanzees. I have learned they love bananas and Planet of the Apes movies.

You understood correctly.

Simmerdownchick is just using fairly poor misinformation in an attempt to muddy up what I said because I obviously struck a nerve with her when I said butt ugly chicks use stolen pictures to represent themselves.

Yeah, exactly. I have conversed with certain people on other social sites and, I can assure you, if they're not chimpanzees, they're not far off it.

I'm delighted when I actually talk with someone from Lush - gender becomes pretty obvious. Most of my very closest friends here on Lush have chatted with me at least once by phone. Those conversations are priceless as the fantasyland of Lush becomes real. Have we ever met? No, so it is still fantasyland, but at least I know that their representations of themselves don't involve a gender switch. One of my other closest friends here has sent me enough pictures of her that I'm pretty sure she is what she says. Again, priceless. If I got fooled and then actually set up a meet and find other than I expected, well, the two of us might just make the news. There are dangerous games that can be played on websites like this one.

A "what % of" people here are really ______ is, in my humble non-judgmental opinion, a bit pointless under most circumstances. Exception would be if misleading someone caused harm - beyond that it's online-person beware there are folks who for whatever reason portray fictional attributes - be it gender, age, looks, etc... If the person you are interacting with is providing you with something enjoyable (laughter, fantasy, escape, opinions, chit-chat, etc.) not sure it really matters. If it does matter, then move on. A number of years ago I was roleplaying with a "person" quite often - she said she was a she - later found out she was a guy... but I did not feel duped because it was roleplaying - all fantasy stuff - no worries (for me that is - someone else might have gotten upset) - I had no intention on doing anything more than online roleplaying with her/him - she/he was good at it - it was fun - that's that.

As for possible other threads that could be started with similar "what % of people here really _____ ... could be:
are hung like horses?
have 38DDD breasts?
have sex 18 hours a day... every day?
have fucked 28,892 different people?
ride bicycles buck naked?
wear clean underwear?

List could go on and on smile

This has given the whole debate a completely different perspective. It's good input. Well done.

This site is a form of entertainment and should be treated as such. Even if the person you're chatting with is a guy posing as a woman, as long as you're having fun and achieving what you desire, who gives a fuck.

This site is also a great source of information. If we listen to the opinions and advice given out by certain people we might all learn something at the end of the day.

So if we all lie back, chill out, have a laugh and enjoy the ride, I'm sure we can all find some form of gratification in one way or another.
