Which is better (or worse depending on your point of view) getting a DRE (digital rectal exam) by a male doctor or a female doctor?
I've only had DRE's from male doctors. But would love to get one from my current primary care doc. She's blond, awesome body, and probably in her early 30's. Of course, that's why I signed up for her when I needed a new doctor.
But I get vibes that she's a bit of a prude. At my annual physical, she goes through the typical list of questions, to include, "is everything working ok down there", and I generally say still works but recovery is slower than years ago, and typically have to urinate in the middle of the night -- with the hopes that she'll bend me over the table for a DRE. Nope.
One time I had a rash on my upper thigh, and she gave me exam shorts to put on rather than just having me drop my pants.
Since I'm in the 50+ crowd, I can only hope she'll give me the DRE one of these years.

Had it done by both. No big deal

Also have had it done by both and my current physician is female. Only difference is that she has the more slender fingers, which is good. She also always keeps a nurse in the room, which sort of doubles the embarrassment, but both are professional and very matter-of-fact about it. I usually try to crack a joke or something to lighten the mood, once asking if they'd found my missing TV remote.
On another occasion she'd said, "It's been a year since we did a prostate exam, do you want to do that?"
I replied, "Well, 'want to' may be a bit strong, but I suppose we ought to."
It helps if we can laugh, because I'm sure they don't enjoy it any more than I do!

Only had rectal exams from male doctors so far. Female nurse was always present in exam room. Most of time nurse would put Vaseline on doctor finger.
Not even sure if nurse applying lube or nurse watching doctor finger slipping into my rectum was more embarrassing and humiliating.
Have not had one in a while. My current family doc does not seem to think it necessary. He is wrong, given there's family history (younger brother), but at least he ordered a PSA after my brother told me about his diagnosis and it was good
But mine has always been done by a slightly embarrassed male. I had a female doc, who was probably the best family physician we have had, in the late 90s but wasn't old enough for her to bother (early thirties) at the time.

Believe it or not, the only DRE I got was from a female doctor. It helped that she was quite attractive. Before she did it I asked her to hold up her hand. I pointed to her pinky finger and said "I'll take that one". We both laughed and she said that I wouldn't be that lucky. I didn't mind that exam one bit.
