Of course commando leaves you open to having nasty accidents with zips, (something you usually only have to do once aggggghhh! to be ever cautious afterwards); briefs by the way go a long way to preventing this.

The reason I heard was that commandos don't wear underwear. Since commandos are seen as soldiers who will cross any terrain, underwear gets uncomfortable. I don't know if it's true or not, but that's where it allegedly originated.

Having work British military working uniforms I can assure you that wearing underwear is a sight more comfortable as the material is very rough and abrasive on your tender parts.
